Less Mear

Guardian :

People should have one meat-free day a week if they want to make a personal and effective sacrifice that would help tackle climate change, the world's leading authority on global warming has told The Observer

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which last year earned a joint share of the Nobel Peace Prize, said that people should then go on to reduce their meat consumption even further.

Well, at least moose aren't farmed, being wild animals. They have a natural right to be where they are. Don't like moose meat very much, but moose themselves are pretty cool. They're monstrous in size.

Unless you consider the unnatural control of their predators - wolf and bear. They might as well be farmed.

I've been doing my part. I rarely eat meat other than the occasional hamburger.

Quit eating pork products.

Chicken is still my choice for having something with substance to it.

I agree, all those cows are not helping things,

The anti environmentalists can't be convinced of anything and try to prove their machismo by ridiculing any and all environmental attempts to make this a better planet.

Screw 'em. We'll keep trying to make this a better planet...even for them.

Must really suck to be that dum b and stubborn.

It would be interesting to know what the good Doctor ate at his next meal after advising us what to eat or not to eat....

Ladies and gentlemen. I believe we are going back to Eden when peace was truly on earth. Lets be a part of this great awakening and march forcefully foward. The media is finally catching on. It's true that meat consumption is destroying our planet and is definitely, the #1 problem, in regards to climate change. I have done extensive research and I hope all of you, do your research. The meat and dairy industry are very very powerful and lucrative. They'll put up a big fight like the tobacco and oil industry. Good luck spreading the word!! ;)

This article is not advocating that the government should tell us all what to eat. It is trying to bring attention to the fact that eating less meat uses increasingly scarce resources wisely, while doing something that will also be good for the environment.

A trip to the market will quickly show us that the prices of meat products are going up rapidly, and that economic forces are already acting to curtail the eating of meat in this country, as they have all across the world.

BTW, it is the right wing of the political spectrum that is constantly trying to tell people how to behave, not the left. This whole myth about the left being against people's rights to behave how they want to is another one of those "Big Lies" that we are told over and over again.

Whether the issue is women's rights, sexual orientation rights, balancing the budget, avoiding unnecessary wars, health care rights, voting rights, the right to clean air and safe vehicles,it is the left that has fought for us, against the reactionary forces of the right.

Thanks for a very good post.

And, by the way, tonight's meal:

Black-eyed peas (from the bulk department).
Thai red rice (from the local dented-can discount store).
Fresh organic corn (grown within 50 miles in western Mass.)
Free baguette (left out in front of the local bakery after closing)

All bought within a block of home.

Oh yeah, a pint and a half of locally brewed brown ale ($5.50)

And, best of all, a sweet, loving wife to share with.

Simpler you make things -- the better it gets!

I've had 2 or 3 meatless days a week for the last few years. It does vary through the year, depending on what's available, and on my mood at the time, but in general, I recognize that if we're going to maintain a population of 6 or 7 billion people on this planet, we're going to have to reduce meat consumption dramatically.

However, I've tried vegetarianism, but I've never made it longer than a couple months. Meat is too tasty, and satisfying for me to give up altogether. But if we got the majority of the population to just reduce meat consumption occasionally, and to eat locally, we could virtually eliminate massive factory farming and greatly reduce our carbon footprints.

One of the stinkiest, awful places I've ever been through is west Texas, driving past huge cattle stockyards along I-H 10. I wonder what the level of methane emitted was from that one location. There must have been tens of thousands of cattle there. It was unbearable!

I would say there are a dozen better reasons to avoid meat than for global warming purposes. You can't dictate to people what they can or can't eat. They always rebel and do just the opposite. http://mespace.wordpress.com

the #1 thing you can do for the planet is also the #1 thing you can do for your health and your budget and the vegetarian diet is delicious.

Go veggie...

I'll stop eating meat as soon as anti-global warming advocates stop flying on private jets.

P Diddy stopped flying his private jet last week! That ought to at least be worth ordering a salad instead of a burger for the next month.

There is always some excuse with the raptors. Meat was at one time a necessary part of many peoples diet. There are some groups of people (such as in the far North) who can still honestly use that argument. But by and large there is no reason for anyone to KILL and eat animals except vanity and hubris. "I like the way it tastes and I don't give a hoot about the impact it has on others (especially the animals) lives or the planet.

Tell me, when they come up with an acceptable lab grown meat will you still insist on the factory farms? Or will that be the excuse of the day? Barbarity is nothing to be proud of.

This is the greatest truth ever. Thank you Huffington Post. The #1 cause of global warming is finally emphasized. The truth is that we can solve 80% of global warming by going vegan. Over 60 billion live-stocks (not including aquatic species) are raised every Year worldwide. The more people go veg, the faster the planet can heal itself. Burning fossil fuel is not the primary cause of global warming, but secondary. It's very wise to attack the main cause first, since green technology is taking a while to develop. I hope everyone will eat less meat and do their best to spread this information. God Bless.

Wrong, when 99% of the reason for the change in climate is natural, not man made, you would be wrong.

Why is it that people won't read climate history, that is history that goes past 100 years. Most of the global warming junk science come from those that don't look back more than 50 years., since that is when they got their toys that can track things up and running.

How about the govt just tells us what to do and when we are allowed to do it. What to eat, when we are allowed to work out (or how many times we have to), how long to sleep. All of this under the guise of environment, or for the common good.

I'm sure this was the intended purpose for starting the UN.....Theres alot of money right down the tubes....

Instead of one meat-free day a week, how about one meat-day per week?

Side effects would include weight loss, increased energy, improved heart function, less cancer, lower blood pressure, lower grocery bills, less greenhouse gases.
