I Like ItI Don’t Like It

WASHINGTON — A new ad from John McCain's presidential campaign contends his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, "stopped the Bridge to Nowhere." In fact, Palin was for the infamous bridge before she was against it

THE SPIN: Called "Original Mavericks," the ad asserts the Republican senator has fought pork-barrel spending, the drug industry and fellow Republicans, reforming Washington in the process, and credits Palin with similarly changing Alaska by taking on the oil industry, challenging her own party and ditching the bridge project that became a national symbol of wasteful spending.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton came back with fighting words. "Despite being discredited over and over again by numerous news organizations, the McCain campaign continues to repeat the lie that Sarah Palin stopped the Bridge to Nowhere," he said.

Burton said McCain would merely carry on supporting President Bush's economic, health, education, energy and foreign policies, and that means "anything but change."

THE FACTS: Palin did abandon plans to build the nearly $400 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport. But she made her decision after the project had become an embarrassment to the state, after federal dollars for the project were pulled back and diverted to other uses in Alaska, and after she had appeared to support the bridge during her campaign for governor.

McCain and Palin together have told a broader story about the bridge that is misleading. She is portrayed as a crusader for the thrifty use of tax dollars who turned down an offer from Washington to build an expensive bridge of little value to the state.

"I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere," she said in her convention speech last week.

That's not what she told Alaskans when she announced a year ago that she was ordering state transportation officials to ditch the project. Her explanation then was that it would be fruitless to try to persuade Congress to come up with the money.

"It's clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island," Palin said then.

Palin indicated during her 2006 campaign for governor that she supported the bridge, but was wishy-washy about it. She told local officials that money appropriated for the bridge "should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done."

She vowed to defend Southeast Alaska "when proposals are on the table like the bridge and not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative" _ something that McCain was busy doing at the time, as a fierce critic of the bridge.

Even so, she called the bridge design "grandiose" during her campaign and said something more modest might be appropriate.

Palin's reputation for standing up to entrenched interests in Alaska is genuine. Her self-description as a leader who "championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress" is harder to square with the facts.

The governor has cut back on pork-barrel project requests, but in her two years in office, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. And as mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.

This is a petition just started to ask Congress and the President of the United States to request that Gov. Palin and the State of Alaska return the funds that are so obviously scorned by Sarah Palin.

Sure, we know it is just Republican BS, but make her (and John McCain) put OUR money where HER mouth is or shut up.

I'm sure the American public can find somewhere to spend the $433,000,000.00 in funding that Alaska received because of that earmark.

Aargh! Even though I'm merely an interested Canadian observer with no vote, why can't the Democrats just come out and say, "Yes, the Republicans lie all the time to the point where they and their supporters actually believe what they are saying"? Whose votes are they going to lose by merely stating the truth? I think they would win over the majority of "independents" through simple honesty. You Americans still do recognize honesty, don't you?

Because Kevinem32, Democrats do the EXACT same thing, just as often as Republicans.

People can go back and forth over the double talk of McCain, Palin, Obama and Biden till their heads explode, but nothing is ever going to get resolved because of it.

Go to you tube, type "Candidate name" and doubletalk as a search and you'll see what I mean.

I am a right leaning moderate. I voted for Clinton one term, I voted for Bush 2 terms (because I liked him the first term and because Kerry was a worse choice than Bush, at least I believed. I may have been wrong about that choice now but who knows.

I am leaning Obama this term, but not by much, and my only reasoning is because we need a Democrat in power now. I highly doubt he'll do what he promises. His ideas are good but unless we get major support in congress, nothing is going to change.

I can't wait till all this is over. I hate Presidential election year in the US. People get very stupid this time of year, especially Hollywood. Just today Whoopie made a stupid comment about "Being worried about going back to slavery" if McCain wins. I mean honestly. if she was trying to crack a joke she's an idiot. If she wasn't she's even more an idiot.

Although I hope ABC's interview w/ Palin will include tough questions and not be a pandering give away, I hope other networks will provide some light on many unanswered questions. Such as: her stands on sex education, "just say no policy", and teen pregnancy--esp played out in her own family. What about her and her husband's prolonged involvement w/ the Alaskan Independence party, who advocate secession? Why does she continue to tout her saying "no to bridge to nowhere", when she was for it 1st, and her political career has benefitted hugely from earmarks? Her involvement w/ evangelical churches which advocate extreme Dominionist and "Third Wave" views, and videos of her expressing religious messianic views about Iraq war & oil pipeline? Isnt being "pro-life" and "pro-war", where we kill lots of people, contradictory?

On MSNBC this morning: QUESTION to Gov PAWLENTY of Minnesota... "When will we see Gov. Palin agreeing to one-on-one interviews with the press?" ANSWER: "Well, you know that he first has to get thing in order with her family." FOLLOW-UP QUESTION that SHOULD HAVE BEEN ASKED - but wasn't... " But Gov Palin it seems has had plenty of time to travel around the country and spending hour after hour at campaing stops. You mean... there's no time because of her family for a 30-minute inverview on Meet the Press?"

This quote says it all from the blog on McCain-Palin says it all: The governor has cut back on pork-barrel project requests, but in her two years in office, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. And as mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.

It doesn't matter if your male or female; the spin is NOT in. We need to unite for change, real change. Comparing Palin to Clinton is like (using Hillary's quote) "comparing an iceberg to the Titantic".

She's not a reformer. She simply unseated one abusive and corrupt state government with her own abusive and corrupt state government.

The problem was that the good people of Alaska were so desperate to get rid of the current Governor in power they didn't care.

I don't think that as many women are supporting Palin as you think. According to the polls, after her acceptance speech there was a greater increase in approval by MEN and a lot less by women. It looks like there are a lot of guys are turned on by Caribou Barbie...

Here's a Newsweek site with Palin facts. They seem a bit less biased than some sites and clear up many rumors.

Maverick: an unbranded range animal (especially a stray calf); belongs to the first person who puts a brand on it.

Looks like McCain and Palin both need rebranding ; )

WHOA - if this is true then congress stopped the money for the bridge in 2005. lot's of lobbying continued for a long time to keep it. stevens said he'd quit if it fell thru...so in the end congress
compromised - still no bridge - but the state could keep the money be used for other projects...this is before she was govenor.

when she was running for gov in 2006 - was the lobbying by stevens going on to keep the money in the state. was she 'for it' knowing it wasn't going to happen and just wanted to keep the earmark??
either way - she didn't stop the bridge - congress did.

Alaska 'bridge to nowhere' funding gets nowhere
Lawmakers delete project after critics bestow derisive moniker

(11-17) 04:00 PDT Washington -- Fiscal conservatives in Congress won a rare victory Wednesday when lawmakers scuttled plans to spend $230 million to help build "the bridge to nowhere," a span that would lead to an Alaskan island populated by about 50 people.

And if you believe the Democrats have never changed their opinion, they have a bridge to sell ya.

LOL.

There is a vast difference between changing your opinion and claiming that you NEVER held the first opinion. She claims she was always against the project when the facts show otherwise.

Your intellectual dishonesty is showing.
