Polls have come to dominate the media's horse race coverage of political campaigns. Pundits and reporters constantly use them to tell us who's hot and who's not -- but skip over the fact that plummeting response rates and variables like undecided voters and margins of error often render these polls useless as anything other than lightweight diversions on par with horoscopes and political betting lines. Below you'll find a slew of polling, astrological, and betting information that will hopefully help the polling junkies in the media keep polls in the proper perspective.

We've also updated HuffPollstrology to bring you regular takes from astrologers on the state of the presidential race. And we've included a section that digs deeper into how polls are conducted. And to make sure we're really investigating, we're going to add various blogs and articles that cast a skeptical eye on polling. Read on for lots of HuffPollstrology:

ASTROLOGER PHILIP SEDGWICK LOOKS AT THE CANDIDATES - **NEW POST 9/8**:

Sarah Swirl

First, I declare the acceptance speech of Sarah Palin null and void. She had not even been nominated when she delivered her acceptance speech. Evidently, we can't trust mavericks to contain their impulsiveness.

Second, I appreciate the stars align reference in the McCain intro video. I'm worried for you that Christians might realize you invoked the sinful ways of astrology.

Sarah Swirl. No, that's not the offering at the Wasilla Dairy Freeze; it's rock star buzz. A business client e-mailed on the day of Sarah's speech to report that while riding public transportation she eavesdropped on teen age girls ecstatically excited about Sarah's speech. The girls they acted like they were going to see Hannah Montana. So, what were these teenagers pumped about? Is it the phenom or the maternal justification that they can have under age sex?

Neptune, so strong in Palin's chart, refers to rock stars and meteoric rises to fame and embellishes her with celebrity. Anytime Sarah speaks, I can't write about her that day. The collective buzz and giddiness feels like champagne intoxication. Then, come post ecstatic let down and the realization that people listen to her foppish outpouring of shallow insults. Her smug, righteous superiority comes off as adolescent. Saturn, known for fatherly guidance, is in Virgo. Virgo demands for each criticism you render, you are obliged to submit three viable solutions.

Story continues below

Free association is one of Neptune's things. Consider: Buzz > spin inebriation > hangover - kind of a morning after syndrome. They outta have a pill for that. They do, but it'll soon be illegal. Back in the 60's how was it on the unwanted pregnancy front? If you conceived in San Diego you went to TJ and took your chances. Never mind what they can do to your laptop at the border, taking care unwanted pregnancy could cost your life. No one's talking about filthy back alley abortions in which women died of infection and from surgical incompetence (Neptune). They should. Republicans appear to be about saving lives as long you're not evil. If you're evil, to hell with you and the incubus you rode in on. Reversing Roe v. Wade endangers the lives of countless women, many underage, who already lack proper sex education and contraception alternatives.

Good for Palin that the ice chunk - seven square miles larger than Wasilla - that broke off from the Ellesmere Island was hidden from Alaskan view She might be able to see Russia; she can't see global warming. Perception and perspective relate to: Neptune, of course.

It's been fun, Sarah, but things are flapjack flipping serious. Enough of your swirl. It's time to put McCain's judgment to the test. It's time to put Obama's judgment to the test.

McCain's Vietnam radically escalated during a fabrication created by a Texan. Now we have war fictitiously based upon the certain existence chemical, biological WMD's (all Neptune) and nuke-u-lar weapons conjured up by another Texan. Anthrax appeared in the mix (Neptune), which indirectly comes from infected cattle, sheep, goats, wild buffalo, camel and antelope, but fortunately not moose. That pretty much means there could be anthrax under any bush in Texas. The point: Obama defied a contrived war. McCain supported it.

Let's contrast McCain's theme of "My Mars is bigger than Obama's Mars" I can kick ass, you can't. Who supports fictional Afacts to stir war? Who strives to get people talking, aspiring for peace?

I loved the students for McCain signs at the RNC. His Jupiter woos so well with prospect of war that he despises. How will McCain fortify the military to satisfy his bluster? I feel a draft. I bet my Vietnam Campaign and Vietnam Service medals that if McCain reinstated conscription, those in the "student section" would be booked by the St. Paul Police for conspiracy to riot.

Since we've been seduced by Sarah, let's give Biden equal time. He said on the night of Sarah's speech that he and Barack would consider criminal charges against Bush and cronies. Corruption equals Pluto. Laws and breaking of laws comes from Saturn. Pluto's now in Saturn's sign - a tidy fit.

This past weekend he declared compassionate understanding of what it means to lose a job.

This week ahead Jupiter and Saturn seek a solid, material compact with one another as the balancing act of Mars in Libra juggles the manic responses of voters. Those who get it's about money, make hay. Those who miss this point, become an unfound needle in a haystack of polling.

POLLING METHODOLOGY: New Polls Added 9/8

HuffPost is delving into the gray area of how polls are conducted. Below is an analysis of how pollsters come up with the numbers through response rates. The definition of a response rate is taken from Arianna's 1998 column "Investigating The Pollsters."

The key to polling's accuracy is the principle of "equal probability of selection." But if larger and larger numbers among those randomly selected refuse to participate, this principle no longer applies.

We asked polling companies to please give us the response and refusal rates for their polls listed below.

Zogby Internet Poll, Conducted September 5-September 6

Results: McCain 50%, McCain 46% Method: 2,312 likely voters polled over two days. "Can you please give us the response and refusal rates for your most recent national poll?": A Zogby representative said, "12% of the people who received an invitation completed the Sept. 5-6 Zogby Interactive survey."

Gallup Daily Poll Conducted September 5-September 7

Results: McCain 49%, Obama 44% Method: 2,733 registered voters polled over three days. "Can you please give us the response and refusal rates for your most recent national poll?": 14% response rate, 26% refusal rate. This is an average rate for this particular series of polls, technically defined as the CASRO rate which is similar to the AAPOR-III response rate (these definitions can be found here).

Rasmussen Daily Tracking Poll Conducted September 3-September 5

Results: Obama 49%, McCain 46% Method: Sample of 3,000 likely voters over three days. "Can you please give us the response and refusal rates for your most recent national poll?": A representative for Rasmussen told us, "We don't give out that information".

Not only could you find a bargain today, you could also attract the kind of task/job that's just your style. The only snag in all this is that enthusiasm could lead you to wanting to do more than is really feasible. Much might depend on the flexibility of a contract - which is something that might not have been considered and is fazing someone who's not used to this kind of creative thinking and negotiation.

True, you could feel overwhelmed by how much information there is for you to absorb. If on holiday it might be easy to deal with the onslaught of things you need to know. At work though you may need to accept a deadline now so as to have time free later. All this could be put to you by a Libra friend who, for once anyway, seems to be applying common sense: perhaps they sense that you can only cope with so much presently and that you'll soon be better able to cope.

General Election Poll: Rasmussen Daily Tracking

Like all polling firms, Rasmussen Reports weights its data to reflect the population at large. Among other targets, Rasmussen Reports weights data by political party affiliation using a dynamic weighting process. Our baseline targets are established based upon survey interviews with a sample of adults nationwide completed during the preceding three months (a total of 45,000 interviews). For the month of August, the targets are 40.6% Democrat, 31.6% Republican, and 27.8% unaffiliated. For July, the targets were 41.4% Democrat, 31.5% Republican, and 27.1% unaffiliated (see party trends and analysis).

As a professional astrologer, I have a different take on the outcome of the election...what a surprise!
A branch of astrology known as horary is the technique used to predict the outcome of any contest. There are a number of theories of choosing the time and place of the “birth” of Election Day. Should it be Washington D.C. at 7:00 AM? Or rather, as I have chosen, Eastport Maine where the first polls in the U.S. open. Both Barack Obama and John McCain have placements consistent with previous presidential charts. Both have their Moon signs in Capricorn (currently the planet Jupiter, expansion, is in Capricorn). Additionally, Michelle Obama has her Sun sign in Capricorn and Cindy McCain’s Moon sign is in Capricorn. The Moon rules the public. Capricorn is the sign of the Executive. Wow. Is it any wonder that each candidate won the nomination of their party.

The next element are the significators of the the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. It is generally accepted that Jupiter rules the Republican Party and Saturn rule the Democratic Party. Whichever planet is strongest in the Election Day chart points to the winner. Sparing the reader further technical details, the chart shows that the Democratic Party is stronger on election day….BARACK OBAMA WINS!

I'll pit my "psuedo-science" against an economist or pollster any day!!!

According to your theory Bush should have beaten Clinton in 93, Dukakis Bush in 88, McGovern Nixon in 72, Hoover FDR in 32, Bryan McKinley in 1896, and I could go on.

Furthmore, Mr. professional, isn't Saturn the planet of Conservatism? And isn't the modern Republican Party dominated by its conservative right wing?

Actually McCain's Mars in Leo is bigger than Obama's Mercury in that sign. For Obama words are deeds for McCain words are cheap, action speaks louder. Hillary Clinton (Mars in Leo) said it best: "McCain and I offer experience, Obama offers speeches.. The time calls for a warrior not an orator, a man of deeds not words. McCain not Obama-who served the purpose of stopping the Clinton machine so that McCain could be president. On January 20, 2009 when the 44th President is sworn into office Mars and Mercury (the warrior and orator) will be conjuncting the MH in Capricorn. Mercury is in retrograde. This is a day that favors a doer (Mars) not a speechifier (Mercury). It would have been Hillary's day if Providence hadn't intervened in the person of Obama.

By the way as for Obama defying a "contrived" war, he opposd it on the fictitious notion that Saddam could be "contained." Poor Obama, if he had done his homework he would have learned that the containment regime "Oil for Food Program" had collasped during the Clinton Administration and that Saddam had turned Iraq into a menacing production factory for jihadist killers. Covert terrorist programs can't be contained. He was sending out thousands upon thousands of terrorists into the world some trained in the use of biological and chemical weapons. Good thing we got rid of him.
