Rendell

Gov. Ed Rendell decried a double standard in the treatment of Sarah Palin on Monday, saying that if it was he who was at the center of the "troopergate" investigation, the press would be calling for his head.

"She [claims to be] a reformer," said the Pennsylvania Democrat. "And yet she is being investigated on the charge that she used her power as governor to fire someone who was going through a messy divorce with a relative of hers. Could you imagine if I was doing the same thing in Pennsylvania? You would be calling for my impeachment."

The remarks came at the end of a long list of criticisms that Rendell, one of the foremost supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary, launched against the Republican vice presidential nominee. Ignoring the directive of the Obama campaign to focus attentions on McCain, Rendell called out Palin on everything from ethics to earmarks.

"[The McCain camp] has tried to again obscure the facts about Gov. Palin. 'She is a reformer and against earmarks.' No she isn't, when she was mayor of that town she hired a lobbyist to get earmarks... 'She was against the bridge to nowhere.' No she wasn't. She was for the bridge to nowhere first... She is a budget balancer. But she left the town in greater debt then when she became mayor, so she is not a budget balancer."

"I like her," Rendell concluded. "She is a good person, she has tremendous potential but in no way shape or form is she ready to be president of the United States."

The Rendell call, organized to preempt a McCain appearance in Pennsylvania, was ostensibly on the topic of how the Arizona Republican has engaged in dirty politics when it came to discussing Obama's tax record. And on this issue, Rendell was again in vintage outspoken form.

"First of all, let me say it should be embarrassing for the Republican ticket that Rick Davis, Sen. McCain's campaign manager, said 'this election is not about issues.' Good lord, with all the challenges facing America it has to be about issues...They don't want to talk about issues because when the truth comes out about issues the American people will favor Sen. Obama tremendously."

The Republicans, he added, "would make the all time all-star team for spiders the way they can spin."

But most questions, as has been the case since the Palin announcement, were focused on the Alaska governor.

Would she siphon of Clinton supporters in Pennsylvania? No, said Rendell, who expected Obama to receive somewhere along the lines of "95,96, or 97 percent of the vote."

Was she qualified to serve as VP? Absolutely not, he bemoaned.

The McCain camp argues that, "Governor Palin, because of her executive experience as a mayor of a small 9,000 person town and governor of Alaska for 20 months, has that experience. Well, I refer you to a McCain camp document they put out when [Virginia] Gov. Kaine was considered to be vice president. They attacked his experience and derided Richmond [where Kaine was formerly mayor] because it was the 105th largest city ... I think Gov. Palin was mayor of the 50,000th [most populated] city in the America... It was fair game to say Gov. Kaine was not qualified because of his credentials. If they are going to be consistent then they believe that Gov. Palin is unqualified to be vice president."

"Rendell: If I Was Palin You'd Be Calling For My Impeachment"

No...if you were Palin I'd be calling for you to show me your underwear. But, sadly, you are not Palin.

Thus, I am simply calling for you to hush now.

This is why the Repubs are the biggest losers of all time...

With mentally challenged comments like this, they deserve to lose the White House and the Congress for 1000 years.

The Republicans have no shame. Palin and McCain have no shame. They lie outright. Keep putting that out in front and eventually the trust factor comes into play. Except for the Fox crowd that want to be spoon fed lies.

I have liked the response lately from the Democrats. Balance between your policies and attacking their lies.

The only thing I see from Republicans is don't tax us and you don't love this country enough.

Patriotism is the last defense of a bankrupt party.

It worked for Bush, didn't it?
Lie about Iraq.
Lie about Gitmo.
Lie about civil liberties...
LIE, LIE, and LIE some more until people think it is true...

That's how he got people to think Saddam caused 9/11...

It appears that the Republicans once again hoist themselves up somewhere... and that Obama and McCain will attempt to stay above the fray while others duke it out on their behalf...
Politically, this makes sense as time and time again candidates who dish out dirt against their opposition are slimed by the dirt or that they are said to be not as liked by their constituents or as trusted as those who do not do so.
Having elected officials who disobey orders and speak out against the opposition is just the thing to make the Party have a chance to win in the next election...
I would encourage political leaders to do so as long as they can do so as long as they are credible, are innocent of wrong doing or at least free of any scandels, and can articulate the issues and like this guy state the truth rather than the Koolaid fiction that those who are packaging Palin have tried to stuff down our throats.

A reply to Maxie19--Although I absolutely understand and, at times, share your concern, I believe it is surrogates and we the people who also have to show our outrage--we can't always wait for one politician to be the anger, or the directness that we seek. Look at the most recent add Obama's camp put out--it punches at the right pitch.Obama is in charge of the message going out and it's a good one. I always get impatient when there is a need for a change in strategy (like post RNC and Palin) because Obama's timing is not based on immediately responding to what is being poured into the MSM. His learning curve often frustrates me but his ultimate response is right on.
IN ADDITION-YOU GO GOV RENDELL!!

Sorry Governor,

If you were Sarah Palin, you wouldn't have been elected to office.

The good people of Pennsylvania are too smart for that.

Go Steelers!

P.S. There are more people in the city of Philadelphia than there are in all of Alaska. Yikes.

Sarah Palin is a political prostitute who stood on the corners of Wasilla, Alaska and waited for the next highest-paying JOHN to come along, and he did. Sarah Palin sold the remnants of her soul (what little she had left) and sold out her children and her family all in the name of power and her JOHN. That John's name is JOHN MCCAIN. Sarah Palin is the highest-paid UNVETTED CALL GIRL of all time.

THANK YOU MR. RENDALL!

It has been shown during the primaries and thereafter, that if you stay put when the other side is throwing lies, YOU LOOSE.

More you leave the lie alive, more it takes momentum by it's own and sinks into the mind of people, especially the specific electorate targeted by Palin.

Whenever you fight back, you recover from your loss. In addition it energize our people.

Clinton supporter Rendall becomes the best of Obama's SURROGATES.

WE HAVE TO SHOW "OUTRAGE"! STRONG OUTRAGE.

Where are the other SURROGATES?

It's about time other democrats start supporting the candidate in ways that will make a difference. Call Sara on every one of her lies.....every time she gives the same speech all of us should send one dollar to the Obama Campaign. thay woud be 18 million from hillary's supports and another 18million from Obama's.

Great post lilylin. It's great that we all share thoughts and information with each other here but we need to ACT as well. I just officially joined the Obama campaign as a volunteer today and I'm going to start making calls to Ohio tomorrow. If we all take action we can stop this Palin runaway train to disaster.

You go, Gov. Rendell! I contend that if every Dem Gov. in every red state will do the same (Gov. Bredesen, are you listening???), we will make some headway. It is not being "mean" if it is true. The Dems have every right to call her out on her lies!

And, since this election will have to be won based on the electoral college, I am all for the State Politicians to do the Dirty work...I am o.k. with Obama taking the high road.

Rendell's actions are the best ! C'mon other Governors, Congressmen. We are in the majority in this realm. People love their own Governors (as evidenced by the Palin bragaddocio about how popular she is). They will listen!

Alright!!! We found a fighter who knows how to run it down to the people! No wonder Barack lost Pennsylvania. McCain will too!!!

Such a DEEP Democratic Bench this season!!!!

I always had a problem with Rendell. I felt his alliegence with the Clinton's had him saying things that were both inaccuate and let's just say, unhelpful. Both before and after Obama locked up the nomination. Now, I think he just might be exactly what we need.

He delivered Pennsylvania to her, so despite what you say, he walked the walk...now he's doing it for Obama, and more power to him...sock it to Sarah, Ed,

I'm not saying he wasn't a great asset to the Clinton's, he was and is. Without him, Hillary would have lost Pennsylvannia. I actually thought he might be a good VP choice but he never really came around to Obama till now. Better late than never I guess.
