Rendell

Gov. Ed Rendell decried a double standard in the treatment of Sarah Palin on Monday, saying that if it was he who was at the center of the "troopergate" investigation, the press would be calling for his head.

"She [claims to be] a reformer," said the Pennsylvania Democrat. "And yet she is being investigated on the charge that she used her power as governor to fire someone who was going through a messy divorce with a relative of hers. Could you imagine if I was doing the same thing in Pennsylvania? You would be calling for my impeachment."

The remarks came at the end of a long list of criticisms that Rendell, one of the foremost supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary, launched against the Republican vice presidential nominee. Ignoring the directive of the Obama campaign to focus attentions on McCain, Rendell called out Palin on everything from ethics to earmarks.

"[The McCain camp] has tried to again obscure the facts about Gov. Palin. 'She is a reformer and against earmarks.' No she isn't, when she was mayor of that town she hired a lobbyist to get earmarks... 'She was against the bridge to nowhere.' No she wasn't. She was for the bridge to nowhere first... She is a budget balancer. But she left the town in greater debt then when she became mayor, so she is not a budget balancer."

"I like her," Rendell concluded. "She is a good person, she has tremendous potential but in no way shape or form is she ready to be president of the United States."

The Rendell call, organized to preempt a McCain appearance in Pennsylvania, was ostensibly on the topic of how the Arizona Republican has engaged in dirty politics when it came to discussing Obama's tax record. And on this issue, Rendell was again in vintage outspoken form.

"First of all, let me say it should be embarrassing for the Republican ticket that Rick Davis, Sen. McCain's campaign manager, said 'this election is not about issues.' Good lord, with all the challenges facing America it has to be about issues...They don't want to talk about issues because when the truth comes out about issues the American people will favor Sen. Obama tremendously."

The Republicans, he added, "would make the all time all-star team for spiders the way they can spin."

But most questions, as has been the case since the Palin announcement, were focused on the Alaska governor.

Would she siphon of Clinton supporters in Pennsylvania? No, said Rendell, who expected Obama to receive somewhere along the lines of "95,96, or 97 percent of the vote."

Was she qualified to serve as VP? Absolutely not, he bemoaned.

The McCain camp argues that, "Governor Palin, because of her executive experience as a mayor of a small 9,000 person town and governor of Alaska for 20 months, has that experience. Well, I refer you to a McCain camp document they put out when [Virginia] Gov. Kaine was considered to be vice president. They attacked his experience and derided Richmond [where Kaine was formerly mayor] because it was the 105th largest city ... I think Gov. Palin was mayor of the 50,000th [most populated] city in the America... It was fair game to say Gov. Kaine was not qualified because of his credentials. If they are going to be consistent then they believe that Gov. Palin is unqualified to be vice president."

I would LOVE Ed Koch to get on and make an ad for Obama about this...would be hilarious:

Hey Sarah, I ran a city whose metropolitan area is about 12x bigger than your igloo of a state!
My budget was larger than your state's could ever imagine!
Another mayor of New York, Rudy, was trying to portray Barack as a cosmopolitan!
And what the h--ll is wrong with that?
I'd take a bagel and lox from any fabulous NY deli over your smelly old fish any day!
You ran a city?
Fugeddaboutit!

Thank you Governor Rendell!

You are a breath of fresh air.

I am an O.bama supporter, but sometimes this "taking the high road" is exhausting.

The democrats need surrogates to appear on all the media outlets like Rendell saying exactly what he is saying. Fighting back. He doesn't have to come on as a spokesman for the O.bama campaign, but as a freelance democrat. He's also in the perfect position to criticize Palin given that he was an ardent and vocal supporter of a much better woman candidate than Palin. Thus the "s.exist" defense won't fly with him.

Strategy... know when to give up on the high road (which I do admire) and come out kicking A$$. I know Obama can be tough... he's been holding back.

Thanks Governor Rendell!!!

I received notification from FactCheck stating Sarah Pelin has never been a member of AIP. I saw the video of the man with the long beard on YouTube last night but it has now been scrubbed. I wish I had downloaded it but a friend of mine did. So there is proof that she was a member. This makes me lose faith in what is reported on FactCheck. The msm will never show this video. Is there another website that gives the facts on the b.s that travels around the web?

My understanding (which could be wrong) is that her husband either was or still is a member and that she has spoken at their convention and expressed sympathetic feelings towards their cause. But I'm not sure if she was "officially" a member. The media needs to do some "investigative reporting" on this an many other issues.

Since McCain refused to vet her, the media will have to do his job for him.

"Fact Check" and Wikipedia are both manipulated by the right. I did research on the genesis of both these organizations. Even Google seems to be leaning to the right. A lot of links that were there before have now "disappeared".

Thank you Governor Rendell. I have neighbors here in Montgomery County who are afraid of hearing this, they want so badly to like this woman. They want so badly to believe in McCain and Palin, mostly because they are Republicans and their parents were Republicans. They are being lied to and they accept it because that's what they want to hear.

Go, Rendell!!!! Now we need to get ALL the Dem Governors and Mayors across the US to follow suit! And they are the ones in a unique position to do so without getting any backlash from Palin! After all, they hold the same position she does or did. And she doesn't have a leg to stand on because she did indeed LIE!

I read a really great diary the this morning day on the daily kos which effectually told Democrats to change their game plan. Not to lie of course. But to come up with key phrases to hammer McCain on.

Don't go on TV and react to their attacks. Always have your own agenda; your own talking points; your own message. Never, ever react; don't explain; don't set the record straight. All that stuff it's perceived a weakness, and that is a real "killer" in the mind of the voter.

Never, ever, ever, apologize for anything. Don't look too aloof. Show some disdain, some anger. Talk about your opponent with disdain, with an utterly dismissive attitude.

Come up with messages that will travel the airwaves quickly and will reach millions of voters; those messages have to be very poignant: McCain wants to start more wars; Your kids ARE going to be drafted into combat, and die in unnecessary wars started by McCain. McCain's character is questionably, and by the way, here's what he did in relation to the Keating Five, and here's why he's a crook.

Palin is a nut case fundamentalist who wants to bring about a theocracy; she wants to take away women right to choose.

Those were just a FEW points I agree with.

Bravo Rendell!!!
We need more like him...attack, attack, attack---thats the only thing that can squash the repugs...He did a great job on hitting her hard-and not going near sexism!!!
I say Barack should leave her alone-she is small fry-let people like Rendell go after her-also I love Barbara Boxer-talk about a fighter (who need a pitbull when you have a Boxer!).
Barack should go after McCain-get under his skin.
I am tired about hearing what a gift from god she is to us---what did america do before palin-it is time to put some water on this fire---they are going to get people to believe that her daughter is actually the virgin mary!
Keep highlighting the lies!!!
