The Rachel Maddow Show Set To Premiere As Host "On The Cusp Of Full-Blown Stardom"

ST. PAUL - When Rachel Maddow arrived at a local café one morning last week on behalf of the Air America affiliate that broadcasts her three-hour drive-time show in the Twin Cities, she was dressed for radio, with a loose-fitting V-neck T-shirt and thick-rimmed black glasses.

One of the hundreds of listeners who patiently waited in line to meet Maddow came with an offering: a "Give Peace a Chance" lapel pin that she hoped Maddow would sport on her MSNBC television show. "I won't wear jewelry" on the air, Maddow said, apologetically affixing the pin to a corner of her shirt, near her waist. "I don't want to start a cascade of things I can't control."

It may be too late to stop the gush. Maddow was part of the original lineup on Air America, founded in 2004 to counter conservative dominance of talk radio under the market-friendly promise that liberals, too, could be entertaining. More than anyone else, Maddow fulfilled that pledge, with an affable and erudite approach to the day's news and the rhetorical combat that inevitably surrounds it.

Tonight, "The Rachel Maddow Show" debuts on MSNBC, leaving her on the cusp of full-blown stardom in the mainstream media that her most devoted fans see as an enemy.

Thank God for Keith and Rachel! They help keep me from going over the edge reading about McCain and Palin. I no longer watch any other news coverage on TV- this is a much more conservative (and ignorant) company than I'd realized. I wish those in Deliverance-land would secede and get out of our lives.

Rachel is an incredible addition to the MSNBC lineup. I sure will be watching. Here is a female to be proud of- a role model for our children. She is tough but never impolite or nasty. She is very bright and well educated but never condescending. I thoroughly enjoyed her every time she was on substituting for Keith- first time that I had actually seen her. I look forward to more in the future- I really believe that she is someone who will speak the truth as she sees it and will not be intimidated by the network.

Based off MSNBC's recent actions and the fact that Donahue had the highest rated show on the channel when they pulled him so he wouldn't get in the way of the sexy war-mongering that was trendy at the time . . . it's hard to feel optimistic about her long-term chances. However, I am happy she has her own show - keep in mind there are "neutral" writers/bloggers already complaining about the "sudden" shift to "extremist left-wing" commentators based off the sole presence of two dissenting voices (Olbermann and Maddow). These complaints come from the same people who extol the "hearty" balanced view of Brit Hume et al

I've noticed that a great many people who supported H'illary in the primaries have actually come to villify not just Obama or the Democratic Party, but also their own progressive values.

Hopefully she will offer the same type of show as Keith where only guests that agree with her are allowed on the show. We can't have dissenting opinions on a liberal show, it shouldn't be tolerated.
