Palin Pals

Good Morning America convened a klatsch with four of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's "closest friends" for 15 years in the hopes that one of them might spill the beans on the press-shy vice-presidential contender and reveal that she is secretly having an affair with a book-banning polar bear or something. What they reveal, however, is that not all of them are likely to vote for their friend.

As it turns out, Palin's pals are a perfectly lovely quartet of women who hang out and exercise and eat chocolate, but the video is burning up the blogosphere because some of them are avowedly pro-choice -- in opposition to Palin -- and three of the four won't even say they're supporting her ticket.

[WATCH.]

This is supposed to reveal that the people who know Palin best won't vote for her, and so you'd have to be crazy to do so, but, honestly? I wouldn't vote for most of my friends, either, because they tend to be criminals or drunks or worse: bloggers. I'd expect my dear friends to oppose my own presidential ambitions on similar grounds.

More curious, frankly, is the revelation that Sarah Palin hates cats. This is not abnormal on its face, since it's perfectly reasonable to loathe anything that requires the permanent installation of a box full of feces in one's household. However, Palin may have a political reason for opposing cats. According to a letter sent to the Palm Beach Post, it seems that the residents of Talkeetna, Alaska - who the Wikipedia tells me is the inspiration for the fictional burg of Cicely, as depicted in the teevee show Northern Exposure - chose a cat named Stubbs as their official mayor. Stubbs has executive experience, hunts prey with his bare paws, and does not bilk the taxpayers of Alaska out of money for fake per diem expenses, like Palin does.

Stubbs the cat hangs out at Nagley's General Store in Talkeetna, with a bunch of other cats, all of whom have been thoroughly vetted, by actual veterinarians.

part II

I bet sarah palin is a great friend to these women. I bet she's a great mother, nevermind the headlines. and I bet she's a great partner to her husband. I'm sure she's a great athlete and hunter. and I'm sure there are at least some good things she's done and done well as governor. but, I don't get the feeling that sarah palin is in this thing for me. and none of these things, least of all her closest friends, persuade me that she is suited for the vice presidency, much less the presidency. i would hope as a nation we would have come a long way since quayle-like VP nominees, and certainly on the heels of george w. bush even further. sarah palin was chosen to appease the far, far right and to manipulate women into thinking she represents something far more palatable. would it be too much to ask that we remember that we are electing a president here, at one of the most challenging times in our nation's history?

I agree with you totally. Just because of her gender does not make her the best, qualified choice. As an American woman, I applaud her having a large, healthy family. However, I do not agree with doubled-minded tactics to sway votes and to get whatever you want. In the Bible, it says, "a double-minded man is unstable in all of his ways." According to the limited biography of Gov. Palin, she is very double-minded and unstable. This election should not be about your race, gender or socioeconomic status. It should be about a change that can and will affect us all. Thanks. Sorry, for the long spil!

part I

would it be too much to ask that we have an intellectual in the white house? someone with a world view, rather than tiresome ethnocentricity. someone who reads. and writes. and has travelled. someone who has given great thought to being leader of the free world and what that would mean. someone who has deeply reflected on the challenges to be faced, rather than wonders out loud what the vice president does for a living. someone as confident in his abilities as he is humbled by his limitations. someone who inspires one to join the cause, as opposed to the club. john mccain wants to be president so badly he chose sarah palin as his running mate. that tells me he wants to be president for all of the wrong reasons, or at least for reasons that don't include me and millions and millions and millions of other americans. and i'm sure these coffee klatschers are wonderful women, but they appeared sadly uncomfortable and tentative which leaves me feeling sadly uncomfortable and tentative. these are sarah palin's closest friends and they don't talk politics, which presumably would cover domestic and international affairs and at least some historical framework. well, not in my circle. and if one of my closest friends felt led to do some awesome thing, possessed a deep and abiding yearning to take her place in history and lead and affect the lot of millions AND felt the weight of such ambitions, she'd tell me.

Americans are afraid of intelligent people. Look at the so-called leaders in Washington on both sides of the aisles. A preview of some of the educational backgrounds of these politicians would send you cringing. Americans applaud dumb, egotistical, cheaters as leaders who are clueless about what is happening around the world. Consumed about grandiose egos.

This is an excellent post - well said!

I am still baffled that people are taking this ticket seriously. It has got to be the one of the weakest tickets in history, right? What gives?

The anti-intellectualism in this country is frightening. That is what happens when your education system is broken and you produce privileged idiots thinking that American Freedom = not having to self-reflect, remaining stubbornly convinced that "we are the best" while the EU and Asia are in full gear moving toward the future.

I say you're not qualified to be leader of the free world if you (and your circle) don't have a natural inclination towards *understanding* the global and local forces that are shaping people's lives. P a lin clearly lacks this, to the extent that I feel ridiculous even arguing the point. I'm not saying that everyone needs to be a cosmopolitan, transnational, thoughtful, intellectual type in this country, but shouldn't our friggin' POTUS be at least??

Did you notice that Amy said Sarah was the most honest person she knew. Well then what happened? She is on the campaign lying daily.

What I find surprising is the picture that accompanies the post. All of these women have a dour expression and none of them are smiling. Isn't this interesting.....

Excellent observation. I agree. They look like they're at a wake. And maybe they are. Perhaps this marks the end of their club and they know it.

Even her own friends are hesitant about who their voting for. I think that speaks volumes about Ms. Lies Through Her Teeth. I think it's disgraceful that some politician can come from nowhere, read some Karl Rove manuscript and repeat it over and over again WITHOUT being held accountable for it. I hope for our countries sake, Gibson asks her real questions, instead of the fluff he's bound to do because it's 9/11. We'll see.

When I saw this on TV yesterday, I was like, what the hell! When the interviewer asked all of the women what make Palin qualified to be VP, there was a long pause. Then one lady in the back said, oh, she has executive experience that the other candidates don't have. Are you kidding me?! That's a total lame talking point that's repeated every time I turn on the TV. And the interviewer just sits there, nodding. What a dodo! Okay, Charlie, make sure you roll the ball with baby bouncies to Sarah when you interview her on Thursday.

She's still studing what Rove wants her to say. Obama's camp better demand no wires or any hearing devices. Palin and McCain need to be patted down. No more boxes on the back. Watch at the debates her hair will be down covering her hearing wire.

So true...I wasn't sure if the box would be hidden in her beehive, but the hair down makes more sense unless she has an wireless implant in her ear....hmmm so many things to prepare for in so little time. Ready on day one? NOT!!

Obama / Biden - Ready on Day one with no need for Cliff notes!

Thank you, SouthFloridaDem, that photo actually shocked me when I realized what the article was about.

I was immediately struck by the nearly tangible dread, fear or anxiety due to withholding the truth - or any/all of these - in the faces of these women.

They are extremely uncomfortable or frightened or lying... this is NOT normal healthy demeanor when talking about a best friend (even if you disagree with her on issues).

Man that is disturbing. Perhaps they hide it better in the interview... I'm not going to bother with it - it doesn't mean much when there is little trust that people haven't been prepped and programmed by the big guys' handlers.

Ugh.

Thought the same thing...they look like jury members being interviewed after a difficult murder case sentencing, not jubilantly chatting about their gal pal!
