Palin Pals

Good Morning America convened a klatsch with four of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's "closest friends" for 15 years in the hopes that one of them might spill the beans on the press-shy vice-presidential contender and reveal that she is secretly having an affair with a book-banning polar bear or something. What they reveal, however, is that not all of them are likely to vote for their friend.

As it turns out, Palin's pals are a perfectly lovely quartet of women who hang out and exercise and eat chocolate, but the video is burning up the blogosphere because some of them are avowedly pro-choice -- in opposition to Palin -- and three of the four won't even say they're supporting her ticket.

[WATCH.]

This is supposed to reveal that the people who know Palin best won't vote for her, and so you'd have to be crazy to do so, but, honestly? I wouldn't vote for most of my friends, either, because they tend to be criminals or drunks or worse: bloggers. I'd expect my dear friends to oppose my own presidential ambitions on similar grounds.

More curious, frankly, is the revelation that Sarah Palin hates cats. This is not abnormal on its face, since it's perfectly reasonable to loathe anything that requires the permanent installation of a box full of feces in one's household. However, Palin may have a political reason for opposing cats. According to a letter sent to the Palm Beach Post, it seems that the residents of Talkeetna, Alaska - who the Wikipedia tells me is the inspiration for the fictional burg of Cicely, as depicted in the teevee show Northern Exposure - chose a cat named Stubbs as their official mayor. Stubbs has executive experience, hunts prey with his bare paws, and does not bilk the taxpayers of Alaska out of money for fake per diem expenses, like Palin does.

Stubbs the cat hangs out at Nagley's General Store in Talkeetna, with a bunch of other cats, all of whom have been thoroughly vetted, by actual veterinarians.

Elitist Six, my ass. they can't even count to 5. Palin's closest friends, who she met at aerobics, sound about as supportive as people paying for the opportunity to be supportive of each other without actually having to do it.

Hmmmm, it's a problem when your freinds can't say that they'll vote for you.

It was a very flattering interview for Palin, she has some very loyal friends. Pro Life? Pro choice? As a man, I feel that the abortion issue is not an issue with me. That's between a woman and her doctor. The war in Iraq appears to be slowly working it's way towards a positive conclusion, I'm more worried about Afghanistan. This makes the most important issues for me the problems with the economy and the unfair influence of the special interest groups. I don't believe McCain when he says he'll stand up to them. McCain is just another shade of Bush. He practically oozes incompetence. I also don't believe Obama when he talks about change and hope. I think there are people on both campaigns who just can't wait to get on the Federal gravy train, so it's quite disappointing that we don't have better qualified and experience candidates.

Fax...
In my heart, I have to decide who I think is going to take this nation in the way that I feel it needs to go... a nation that works for everyone and not just the few.....
I am sorry that you feel that this year is so depleted of candidates.... I have to disagree...
This year there were soooo many good candidates to choose from. The Dems got O and the Reps got McC.....
When I compare the Dem platform vice the Rep platform, I see that the Rep platform is no different than the last 8 years... McC can claim that he's going to be the Reformer, but he's running on the Rep platform and is, quite frankly, lying that he is... I have watched his stump speeches and he never says anything of substance... in contrast, O is very detailed on EXACTLY what he wants to do and how he's going to pay for it.....
I get vague generalities from the Rdpub
and I get specific goals and plans from the Dem...

Definately going Dem this year

How can you claim Senator Obama is a candidate of substance when the issue that propelled him to the front he lies about repeatedly?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVy5REoiDJo

That is a seven minute video showing Senator Obama lying about Iraq over and over.

WOW . . . out of her closest friends, 2 come outright and say they "haven't decided" . . . which sounds overly diplomatic and polite for saying "not Palin." 1 uses the reason "my vote is private" which is her right and the last one is an obvious Palin homer -- as I would expect anyone's best friends to all be.

But it is VERY telling that most of her best friends have serious reservations about her and this election.

This is just more noise. Doesn't anybody care about the issues? Gov. Palin is a tool. We all get that, but she is still on the ticket. So let's focus on where the ticket stands on the issues. Frankly that's a battle the Republicans can't win.

Avoid the Noise, Know the Issues, Vote Responsibly

You mean like she actually has a resume worth running on and has done more to reform her state than the Great Hope? I agree but Senator Obama's campaign can't run on issues because he has never changed anything or reformed anything.

She is a true republican, she took a balanced budget and turned it int a 27 million dollar deficit, didn't she?(That's a little over five grand for every man, woman, and child in the village) And proposed rhetoricly violating the first amendment by censoring the library books? Asked the members of her church to pray for a gas pipeline? Now that's a record!

Never changed anything? Serving in the senate is ALL about changing things!

- In the US Senate Obama has written 890 pieces of legislation, and co-sponsored 1096 pieces of legislation. These include three significant bills, which PASSED in the senate and are now law. They address proliferation of nukes, ethics and open government, and the treatment of vets at Walter Reed.

- Before getting to the US Senate Obama served 11 years in the Illinois State Senate.

- In the Illinois State Senate he passed health care for children, reformed police interrogation methods to protect the rights of those arrested while improving conviction records.

Palin has yet to do a single thing that has benefited anyone outside the 650,000 she has briefly governed in Alaska. Obama's work in Illinois alone has served 13 million people for 11 years.

Didn't the GOP say this election wasn't about "issues"? Because they are trying to make it about who can best lie, cheat and steal an election. They are much better at this then democrats are.

You make friends especially close friends with people who believe like you. Palin is very pro life so why are her closest friends choice?

What it tells me is she is a phony living two lives, one public one and one private one and the fact that they won't vote for her tells me they know it. Also they are the ones above all that would know if she had the smarts to run the country.

I know whether my friends do or not. If I thought they could I would work to the ground for them.

None of them stated they wouldn't vote for her. One stated she had never voted for a republican as president, which leads you to think she has voted for one at other levels, but will no consider doing so because Sarah is on the ticket.

they can't show palin's real friends, because they're a bunch of wanna-be book-burning rapture-ready creationists.

i support the palin administration for one reason. We haven't learned the lesson if palin-mccain is a viable progression from where we are. It's become nightmarishly obvious that the world will have to learn an even more grotesquely harsh lesson than the one from the Bush administration and its supporters. Prepare for the remedial course in hate-mongering, hubris, and hegemony a la Alaska ethics. If you thought Texas was bad, the next 16 years with Ted Stevens' female alter-ego at the federal trough will more than shock and awe.

We're already primed for the lies.

We believe we're in the classic class struggle at home. But the government just seized half the houses in America in the most swift corporate-communist revolution in history.

The corporate commies have won, and the US taxpayer will be enslaved for a century to pay off the institutional banking and foreign sovereign funds, the robber barons we invite to raid the treasury in the guise of rescuing our economy via the stultifying impact of shock and awe.

The times, they are astounding, and the end of the American age ascends, in the twinkling of an eye, while pious capitalists clap wildly for what is inarguably a bigger state bailout than Social Security ever was. Six trillion dollars in commercial activity gone, just like that... a rapture, indeed.

I think there tends to be a strong libertarian tendency in Alaskans, which basically says you don't bother me and I won't bother you and that way we'll all get along. When you take that approach, it's possible to befriend people who disagree with you on major issues since believing the same things isn't the basis of your relationship. It's moose recipes or wolf hunting.

I have many close friends who don't agree with me about many things political, we discuss politics but it doesn't rule our lives. Opposites often attract, friends aren't always in 100% agreement about everything. How boring if they were.

Considering how busy she is with work and family, I doubt that she has much time for many friends. If you are going to effectively criticize her you need to start with her views on the important issues and she's already said how she feels about pretty much everything so go to it. My problem with the democrats today is that they remind me of the republicans. If McCain and Obama flip-flop on everything, how can I trust them? Answer: I don't.

I'd like to say, that I lived in a tiny community in the Upper Penisula of Michigan, where it isn't much different than Northern Exposure. I know that her in-laws are commercial fisherman, so don't think good 'ole Sarah is out there fishing with line and sinker. She's catching them in nets and dragging them home! Wonder why the Salmon numbers are dropping like a lead sinker!
Hunting from airplanes is illegal in Michigan, and should be everywhere. If the friggin wolf population is so high in Alaska, that you can shoot them from planes, maybe we should put them where they won't bother poor Sarah. And why not turn in expenses for living in your own house? Heck, if all my husband did was race snowmobiles, I'd use every tax loophole I didn't close up for my benefit! (tongue in cheek). As for book banning, I can't think of the last time I thought about book banning, so why would such a question even come to someones' mind, if they didn't have a motive, hummmmmmmmm? Maybe her chief didn't know how to cook caribou, or is it venison? Hey, maybe another woman around the house isn't what she likes!
Stay home Sarah, and take care of your family, THEY NEED YOU, WE DON'T!

Here’s a new twist on a favorite poem of mine. It was written by a German Pastor named, Martin Niemöller and I hope he won’t mind too badly if I add my own little tribute to it, in a time when Americans stand dangerously close to losing their precious civil rights and democratic freedom and at least HALF of them are to easily fooled or too self absorbed to notice. It goes like this:
When the radicals came for the Muslims,
I remained silent;
I was not a Muslim.
When they locked up the outspoken critics,
I remained silent;
I was not a outspoken critic.
When they came for the gays,
I did not speak out;
I was not a gay.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

Extremism is dangerous. Pass it on.

"She's honest" ????

Man, how many LIES did Palin tell in that speech at the GOP convention. How many time SINCE that convention has she continued to knowingly tell the same lies over and over again?

Either that woman was lying to US, or she sure doesn't know her friend very well!

Palin seems to be a practiced and very convincing liar.

Not Palin-McCain. Even though I think most Republicans think it is Palin-McCain

    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:20 PM on 09/09/2008

I think you have that mistaken with most democrats think it is Palin/McCain. They are the ones that seem to think their candidate is running against her.

Ummm...I think the Obama campaign has made it pretty clear that this election is about McCain/Bush. When McCain trotted out this woman and lied about her background and refused to have the media ask her any serious questions and it is affecting the polls, then I think it is important for supporters of Obama to speak up. We all know McCain is Bush 2.0, but we need to prove the same about Palin.

    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:34 PM on 09/09/2008

Well McCain stands behind her with a dumb smirk on his face, then when she has finished her daily proclamations he totters forward trying to imitate her relative youth. It looks kind of bizarre. A would be President seeking his last hurrah.

Actually most Republicans kow it is Palin-Mccain. Have you noticed how ever since Palin was announced, people aren't accused of playing the age card anymore when they talk about the fact that McCain might die soon? Its almost as if Republicans nod and secretly say "we know about that already, and that's what makes us excited about sarah palin." In other words, the GOP "base" of radical rightwing evangelicals sees an opportunity to get one of their own into the White House without having to go through the formalities of winning a primary and then running a campaign. They will just piggyback on the back of someone else who has already done all the work and then sit back and watch his health with interest.
