LEBANON, Ohio — John McCain took a risk in picking little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a running mate, but now the campaign's playing it safer. She's sticking to a greatest hits version of her convention speech on the campaign trail and steering clear of questions until she's comfortable enough for a hand-picked interviewer later this week.

More than 40 million people tuned in last week to listen to the speech from Palin, the 44-year-old, first-term governor whom McCain announced as his surprise vice presidential pick just days before. Since then, that basic script is all anyone has heard from her publicly, and her only interaction with the media was a brief conversation with a small group of reporters on her plane Monday _ off the record at her handlers' insistence.

Associated Press reporters were not on the plane, but an aide told the journalists on board that all Palin flights would be off the record unless the media were told otherwise. At least one reporter objected. Two people on the flight said the Palins greeted the media and they chatted about who had been to Alaska, but little else was said.

By comparison, her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, has been campaigning on his own, at times taking questions from audiences. He split off to campaign separately from Barack Obama the day after Obama announced his selection. They reunited at their party's convention and spent the following weekend campaigning together.

Biden's appearances have touched on a range of issues _ in Florida he talked about U.S. support for Israel, in Pennsylvania it was economics and tax policy. He was interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press" last Sunday

Amid growing sniping from Democrats, the McCain campaign announced that Palin would sit down for her first interview this week, with ABC. It will take place over two days at her home in Alaska.

And then?

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis has said Palin will "agree to an interview when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it."

Story continues below

"She's not scared to answer questions," Davis said on "Fox News Sunday."

So far, Palin has barely spoken with voters either. Since the convention, she and McCain have breezed through a Wisconsin ice cream shop, a New Mexico restaurant and a Missouri barbecue place, shaking hands with diners but not taking any questions. Photographers and television cameras have been allowed full view while reporters are typically kept too far away to ask questions or hear most of the conversations.

Her public remarks essentially have been excerpts of her convention speech, delivered while introducing McCain at rallies.

Her schedule released Tuesday shows she will attend a "welcome home" rally in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Wednesday evening _ her first major campaign appearance without McCain at her side and his advisers hanging in the wings.

To be sure, all candidates running for office give the same remarks over and over _ Barack Obama's stump speech has hardly changed throughout the campaign, and McCain has been telling familiar stories and jokes for months.

But none of the candidates in this race has been so shielded from the media, so protected from any spontaneous situation, and Palin's unvarying remarks give the impression that she and her message are being tightly controlled. As before her convention speech, McCain's campaign is briefing Palin for her first TV interview.

After a rally Tuesday in Lancaster, Pa., a group of supporters waiting outside to shake hands with McCain and Palin screamed for her to jump up on an outdoor platform, as McCain had just done, and speak to them.

"Speech! Speech!" they cried. She continued down the line, shaking hands, and then hopped into an SUV.

In her prepared remarks, there are always descriptions of McCain as a "man who's there to serve his country and not just his party." He's someone who's "not looking for a fight but is not afraid of one either." He "doesn't run with the Washington herd." He's the only man in this election "who has ever really fought for you."

And always the same details about herself, how she "stood up to the special interests, the lobbyists, big oil companies and the good ol' boys network," as a mayor and then governor in Alaska.

The people in their crowds, many of whom say they've heard these lines before, still go wild when she repeats that McCain put everything on the line last year when he said "he would rather lose an election than see his country lose a war."

She can be a little cutting, as well, when it comes to the Democrats.

"In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers," she says. "And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

She delivers the line, like many of her veiled criticisms of Obama, in a disapproving tone that still manages to sound charming to her fans. It is part of what makes her so popular on the campaign trail.

In Lancaster they cheered when she reminded them, as she did in her convention speech, of Obama's primary-season comment about how some small-town Americans are bitter and cling to guns or religion. She also claimed again that she said "thanks but no thanks" to Alaska's so-called Bridge to Nowhere, even though her version of the story has been widely debunked.

She voiced support for the bridge during her gubernatorial campaign, and the project was only called off after it had become an embarrassment to the state.

Another crowd favorite in her speech is that story about how she got rid of luxuries in the state Capitol, like a personal driver, chef and luxury jet.

"I put it on eBay," she says.

Audiences love this part, but what Palin never adds is that the jet didn't sell on eBay despite numerous attempts. The state eventually hired an aircraft broker to unload it.

"Palin's unvarying remarks give the impression that she and her message are being tightly controlled."

Any surprises here? Bueller? Bueller?

I didn't think so.

Of course, this distraction prevents anyone from actually focusing on the two people who really matter: Obama and McDrill.

Since the Republican campaign is inventing all sorts of other distractions while they prevent her from being interviewed, you can see precisely what's going on here. She is the focus so no one will notice that McDrill is NOT addressing real issues.

Can't wait for that Trophy Vice debate. It's gonna be painful to watch her be crushed.

It's one thing for Obama or Biden to call out Palin on anything. The GOP thugs will accuse them of being sexist or worse. What would be more effective is to set up a steady, drumming, mulimedia messaging that Palin is afraid, that she's a coward, and that she's not ready for national office. This messaging should include McPalin rallies, unless the GOP thugs move them off. Let's not confine this to the web since I'm not convinced that the Independents/swing voters much tune into these sites.

That's funny. In a related post, The View's Elizabeth Hasselback, complained that Michelle Obama would not answer PARTICULAR questions (although Cindy would, "She got nothing to hide."), but our venerable leader, an American politcal candidate for the Vice Presidency, not First Lady, will NOT answer any questions from a respectable news gathering organization, AP and its reporters.

Why the double-standard? Is Palin afraid of the public and what her beliefs say about WHAT she thinks and HOW she thinks? Is Palin afraid that the public will think she's a theocratic wacked-out Moose Mom? Is she afraid that the public will know she will make decisions through a
"crucifix government"?

I can't help of thinking of the opening of "Singin in the Rain" -- where Don Lockwood does all the talking while Lisa LaMont makes dumb faces. About twenty minutes into the film, we hear her voice for the first time -- it's excruciating!

I caaaaaaaaan't stan-im!

"Her public remarks essentially have been excerpts of her convention speech, delivered while introducing McCain at rallies." That statement says a lot. Americans have no idea who this woman really is, and she's going to do everything in her power to keep us from finding out.

This should terrify the public having another VP who is secretive, above the general rules!

Or else, are they insinuating that the person who would be next in line to lead the free world should something happen to the very old and unhealthy John McCain needs to be babysat, so she doesn't speak and let people know her true extremist views?

Why is this tolerated by the Press, if she can't play with the big boys, she needs to go home. You'd never see Hillary coming up with these rules, or one of several dozen other women polititcians. It's outrageous!

On "Meet the Press" Biden could not complete a sentence without pivoting to an off the subject talking point. Obama had the same problem with MSNBC. This is a debating problem. Maybe they are setting up McCain/Palin.

It's annoying, but it's away to get the message across when asked fluff questions (i.e. do you denounce the visiting pastor at your church, or is sarah palin the pig with lipstick you were referring to).

How is the American public finding this exceptable? Why are the people falling in behind this bullcrap?? If this is the kind of dumbness that gets voted into office, then you people deserve everything befalls you. And I don't see anything good happening with 4-8 years of this non-transperancy.

I'm so concerned. Hell, I'm frightened at the thought of McAwful & Pitbull running our country and about the kind of voters they appeal to who I would like to shake out of their shoes, so I couldn't sleep last night, and when I'm in this state, I do silly spelling errors that I notice after it is too late, and then I feel, well, not so smart. See you later after I get some sleep or get my thinking process revived.

Glad (well not really "glad") to hear of others who actually feel fear over the prospect of a McCain-Palin win. It is scary...and will set this country on a path that may not be revocable. I've made a new pledge to myself: everytime I post to a blog, I also go DO something...write a letter to the editor (both national, state and local papers), sign up to register voters, plan to attend a rally, anything that supports the efforts. Heck, I've just agreed to host an organizer at my house who will be working in VA on the youth vote...things I would have never thought I would do, I'm doing now. It makes me feel better to DO something. And it's that important.

Why is the MSM allowing this to be done to them (and, by extension, the American public)? When are they going to stand up and become "journalists"?

If the McSame/Pander campaign wants to "call all the shots" on media coverage, then the media should strike back and tell them that they will cover them on the MSM's terms or not at all. Let's see how long McSame/Pander can go without national coverage daily, while Obama/Biden get all the press. I would guess that within a week (outside of Fox Noise of course because they wouldn't know journalistic integrity if it bit them on the a$$) the McSame/Pander ticket caved.

It's because the MSM is too busy saying how this move to shield her from any questions about her policies is "brillant", or "smart campaign tactics".

Nevermind that taxpayers now have to bail of Fannie and Freddie. Nevermind that unemployment has jumped over 5%. Nevermind homeowners haven't been in such dire straits in terms of keeping their homes since the Great Depression. Nevermind that we are closing in on 50 million uninsured americans. Nevermind that our current president is kicking the Iraq can down the road to another administration (if Obama gets elected, then that could be a GOOD thing). Nevermind that our DOJ has been TOTALLY politicized...I could go on and on.

MSM constantly refers to these "low information" voters. Well, maybe if you gave them some INFO, they would have more!
