LEBANON, Ohio — John McCain took a risk in picking little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a running mate, but now the campaign's playing it safer. She's sticking to a greatest hits version of her convention speech on the campaign trail and steering clear of questions until she's comfortable enough for a hand-picked interviewer later this week.

More than 40 million people tuned in last week to listen to the speech from Palin, the 44-year-old, first-term governor whom McCain announced as his surprise vice presidential pick just days before. Since then, that basic script is all anyone has heard from her publicly, and her only interaction with the media was a brief conversation with a small group of reporters on her plane Monday _ off the record at her handlers' insistence.

Associated Press reporters were not on the plane, but an aide told the journalists on board that all Palin flights would be off the record unless the media were told otherwise. At least one reporter objected. Two people on the flight said the Palins greeted the media and they chatted about who had been to Alaska, but little else was said.

By comparison, her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, has been campaigning on his own, at times taking questions from audiences. He split off to campaign separately from Barack Obama the day after Obama announced his selection. They reunited at their party's convention and spent the following weekend campaigning together.

Biden's appearances have touched on a range of issues _ in Florida he talked about U.S. support for Israel, in Pennsylvania it was economics and tax policy. He was interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press" last Sunday

Amid growing sniping from Democrats, the McCain campaign announced that Palin would sit down for her first interview this week, with ABC. It will take place over two days at her home in Alaska.

And then?

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis has said Palin will "agree to an interview when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it."

Story continues below

"She's not scared to answer questions," Davis said on "Fox News Sunday."

So far, Palin has barely spoken with voters either. Since the convention, she and McCain have breezed through a Wisconsin ice cream shop, a New Mexico restaurant and a Missouri barbecue place, shaking hands with diners but not taking any questions. Photographers and television cameras have been allowed full view while reporters are typically kept too far away to ask questions or hear most of the conversations.

Her public remarks essentially have been excerpts of her convention speech, delivered while introducing McCain at rallies.

Her schedule released Tuesday shows she will attend a "welcome home" rally in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Wednesday evening _ her first major campaign appearance without McCain at her side and his advisers hanging in the wings.

To be sure, all candidates running for office give the same remarks over and over _ Barack Obama's stump speech has hardly changed throughout the campaign, and McCain has been telling familiar stories and jokes for months.

But none of the candidates in this race has been so shielded from the media, so protected from any spontaneous situation, and Palin's unvarying remarks give the impression that she and her message are being tightly controlled. As before her convention speech, McCain's campaign is briefing Palin for her first TV interview.

After a rally Tuesday in Lancaster, Pa., a group of supporters waiting outside to shake hands with McCain and Palin screamed for her to jump up on an outdoor platform, as McCain had just done, and speak to them.

"Speech! Speech!" they cried. She continued down the line, shaking hands, and then hopped into an SUV.

In her prepared remarks, there are always descriptions of McCain as a "man who's there to serve his country and not just his party." He's someone who's "not looking for a fight but is not afraid of one either." He "doesn't run with the Washington herd." He's the only man in this election "who has ever really fought for you."

And always the same details about herself, how she "stood up to the special interests, the lobbyists, big oil companies and the good ol' boys network," as a mayor and then governor in Alaska.

The people in their crowds, many of whom say they've heard these lines before, still go wild when she repeats that McCain put everything on the line last year when he said "he would rather lose an election than see his country lose a war."

She can be a little cutting, as well, when it comes to the Democrats.

"In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers," she says. "And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

She delivers the line, like many of her veiled criticisms of Obama, in a disapproving tone that still manages to sound charming to her fans. It is part of what makes her so popular on the campaign trail.

In Lancaster they cheered when she reminded them, as she did in her convention speech, of Obama's primary-season comment about how some small-town Americans are bitter and cling to guns or religion. She also claimed again that she said "thanks but no thanks" to Alaska's so-called Bridge to Nowhere, even though her version of the story has been widely debunked.

She voiced support for the bridge during her gubernatorial campaign, and the project was only called off after it had become an embarrassment to the state.

Another crowd favorite in her speech is that story about how she got rid of luxuries in the state Capitol, like a personal driver, chef and luxury jet.

"I put it on eBay," she says.

Audiences love this part, but what Palin never adds is that the jet didn't sell on eBay despite numerous attempts. The state eventually hired an aircraft broker to unload it.

To be more specific as Pollsters put it, WHITE-women are flocking to the JMc-Palin Ticket. My question is why are the Hispanic,Black and other Minority Females not doing so? As a White male i must say that i'm quite dissapointed of the Females of my race-Period..Do these White-women know that Palin is anti-feminist personified and is just pawn in the GOP's plan to remain in Power, guess not, so when your Husbands, Sons e.t.c go and die for another useless W AR don't whine but enjoy it!!

I think that it is time that the key to McCain/Palin is offered to the American Public.

Comment: Will someone in the media please stand up and explain to the McCain/Palin ticket that we are in the middle of an election? The voters are supposed to have access to the people involved. Obama has been criticized as a star or celebrity for drawing large crowds, but we are supposed to accept that Palin is actually TREATED as a rock star that refuses to talk with anyone, is just whisked onstage to perform her set, then is chaperoned back to the tour bus. This is so disrespectful of the voters. Isn't she supposed to actually participate in the national discussion so that she may earn our vote? Her campaign manager actually said she had to be treated "with deference" or she wouldn't grant interviews. Isn't this upside down? Isn't she supposed to be interviewing for a public service job? What happened to "Country First"? The citizens of this nation ARE the country. Is this the new paradigm where the media just goes along with whatever the campaigns say?

Palin knows that a working woman makes 77 cents to every dollar a working man makes, so why does she oppose the EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK legislation that would further empower working women - a position identical to her mentors Bush and McCain? What is her plan for health care?

Why did she cut funding for teenage mothers? Why did she cut funding for WIC recipients? Why did she cut "special needs" funding by 62% - especially since she has a "special needs" child? Why did she disrespect community organizers in BLUE & RED States?

Why does she believe there shouldn't be an abortion exception for victims of rape and incest - in light of the high incidents of rape and incest in Alaska? With the next president set to name three Supreme Court Justices, would Palin support Justices who seek to eradicate ROE v. WADE, and, seek to obliterate affirmative action, which mostly benefits white women?

Why did Sarah Palin say that Hillary Clinton's "whining" turned her off, and then turn around and heap praise on Hillary? How does Palin feel about John McCain going to the Stugis, SD BIKE RALLY where he offered his wife up for highly sexualized Ms. Buffalo Chip contests which requires banana swallowing and pickle licking? And does Palin really believe Cindy McCain when she said Palin has foreign policy experience because Alaska is just across from Russia?

So I already know enough about Palin to know she should never be allowed to hold national office

I am sick of all this BS. For crying out loud, if I'd been such a wuss about being confronted on my actions, words or deeds when I was working in the construction industry, I would not have made it to my first paycheck. By the way, I'm female, and no, it wasn't easy. But I did it.
That's why the press needs to do their jobs. I remember during the Nixon era. Now, that was something! When he'd walk to the podium, it was like he'd thrown chum in the water. I thought that's what reporters were supposed to do.
Silly me.

I work in construction too. Everyone has their cross to bear. There is no point in crying sexism. There was a governor that said you shouldn't do anything perceived as whining. You should just work harder. Oh that was Palin. Forget it.

These pubs are acting more and more like tin-horn dictators every day. Kim Jung Il and Putin have similar policies in dealing with the press. At this rate, by November 4th the polls will be staffed by Blackwater thugs who will hand you a pre-punched ballot and order you to place it in the box and move along.

At first it was comical to watch the GOP scramble, lie, shuffle, hide, duck, side-step, and make excuses for Palin. Now it's down right infuriating! McPalin just got a check for 84,000 dollars from the treasury dep't.(taxpayer money) to further promote this 3 ring circus of a campaign. Disgusting!

Obama / Biden - Real Worldwide Leaders (not jugglers, contortionists and clowns!)

She may not be scared of answering question - but the Republicans are plenty scared anyway.

They say an empty tin makes the loudest noise. Palin was the shrillest noise at the convention.

We don't need a 2 days with Sarah lifestyle fluff piece from Uncle Charlie. We need two chairs, some hot lamps, a camera and some decent questions. She's not really a trojan moose. We know exactly what she is. She's more a sniper in plain sight. Shielded from the press, she has been able to fire at will and do damage. Time to smoke her out.

Sarah Palin is a Gimmic, and she is doing what they want her to do, READ a prepared speech. Thats it, thats all. She now is quiet because SHE DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING. She is in the process of getting on the job training. O.K. people ask yourself two questions, One: Is She ready on day one to lead this country and Two: Are you better off now than 8 years ago.

Of course it's all off the record.

The record is scary, the ideologies are scary...

When your ideologies are pro-creationism in schools, anti-choice (even in cases of rape or incest), pro-vouchers, leaving Wasila Alaska 20 million dollars in debt, she was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it, global warming is not man made, anti funding for stem-cell research, ban select books from the public libraries etc...Yeah, I'd be running from the facts if I believed all this garbage too...

Another Karl Rove candidate, that you can't talk to, or about or they'll claim bias if not in their favor. I really wish America would wake up to this same old same old crap. You can put a dress on a pig, and its still a pig.

Is this the same AP that all you Obamabots were moaning as being in the pocket of the Repubs?
There seems to be a problem here...Repubs don't want them, Dems don't want them...
In that case, they are doing something right.

Exactly, I too was surprised that in the course of a week or so the AP was first villain, now victim. Man, this is just getting too damn good. I hope J-Mac doesn't blow it, he's not a good overdog. As we have seen this year underdogs are in the better position.

This article is criticizing Sarah Palin for evading the press, an example of which is this attempt by The AP for her to comment. That does not become, by logical necessity, an article reading favorably about The AP as a whole.

The Associated Press is mentioned once in the entire article, actually: "Associated Press reporters were not on the plane, but an aide told the journalists on board that all Palin flights would be off the record unless the media were told otherwise." That does not look like much of a praise to me.

The relevance of this is that the article does not contradict any alleged "moaning" we "Obamabots" have made about The AP.

That is comedy dou is not 20 points behind means that America is just about dead.
The electorate has no idea what good citizen responsibilities are and the press having already forgotten their duties can not inform them.
We are in trouble!
