LEBANON, Ohio — John McCain took a risk in picking little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a running mate, but now the campaign's playing it safer. She's sticking to a greatest hits version of her convention speech on the campaign trail and steering clear of questions until she's comfortable enough for a hand-picked interviewer later this week.

More than 40 million people tuned in last week to listen to the speech from Palin, the 44-year-old, first-term governor whom McCain announced as his surprise vice presidential pick just days before. Since then, that basic script is all anyone has heard from her publicly, and her only interaction with the media was a brief conversation with a small group of reporters on her plane Monday _ off the record at her handlers' insistence.

Associated Press reporters were not on the plane, but an aide told the journalists on board that all Palin flights would be off the record unless the media were told otherwise. At least one reporter objected. Two people on the flight said the Palins greeted the media and they chatted about who had been to Alaska, but little else was said.

By comparison, her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, has been campaigning on his own, at times taking questions from audiences. He split off to campaign separately from Barack Obama the day after Obama announced his selection. They reunited at their party's convention and spent the following weekend campaigning together.

Biden's appearances have touched on a range of issues _ in Florida he talked about U.S. support for Israel, in Pennsylvania it was economics and tax policy. He was interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press" last Sunday

Amid growing sniping from Democrats, the McCain campaign announced that Palin would sit down for her first interview this week, with ABC. It will take place over two days at her home in Alaska.

And then?

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis has said Palin will "agree to an interview when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it."

Story continues below

"She's not scared to answer questions," Davis said on "Fox News Sunday."

So far, Palin has barely spoken with voters either. Since the convention, she and McCain have breezed through a Wisconsin ice cream shop, a New Mexico restaurant and a Missouri barbecue place, shaking hands with diners but not taking any questions. Photographers and television cameras have been allowed full view while reporters are typically kept too far away to ask questions or hear most of the conversations.

Her public remarks essentially have been excerpts of her convention speech, delivered while introducing McCain at rallies.

Her schedule released Tuesday shows she will attend a "welcome home" rally in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Wednesday evening _ her first major campaign appearance without McCain at her side and his advisers hanging in the wings.

To be sure, all candidates running for office give the same remarks over and over _ Barack Obama's stump speech has hardly changed throughout the campaign, and McCain has been telling familiar stories and jokes for months.

But none of the candidates in this race has been so shielded from the media, so protected from any spontaneous situation, and Palin's unvarying remarks give the impression that she and her message are being tightly controlled. As before her convention speech, McCain's campaign is briefing Palin for her first TV interview.

After a rally Tuesday in Lancaster, Pa., a group of supporters waiting outside to shake hands with McCain and Palin screamed for her to jump up on an outdoor platform, as McCain had just done, and speak to them.

"Speech! Speech!" they cried. She continued down the line, shaking hands, and then hopped into an SUV.

In her prepared remarks, there are always descriptions of McCain as a "man who's there to serve his country and not just his party." He's someone who's "not looking for a fight but is not afraid of one either." He "doesn't run with the Washington herd." He's the only man in this election "who has ever really fought for you."

And always the same details about herself, how she "stood up to the special interests, the lobbyists, big oil companies and the good ol' boys network," as a mayor and then governor in Alaska.

The people in their crowds, many of whom say they've heard these lines before, still go wild when she repeats that McCain put everything on the line last year when he said "he would rather lose an election than see his country lose a war."

She can be a little cutting, as well, when it comes to the Democrats.

"In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers," she says. "And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

She delivers the line, like many of her veiled criticisms of Obama, in a disapproving tone that still manages to sound charming to her fans. It is part of what makes her so popular on the campaign trail.

In Lancaster they cheered when she reminded them, as she did in her convention speech, of Obama's primary-season comment about how some small-town Americans are bitter and cling to guns or religion. She also claimed again that she said "thanks but no thanks" to Alaska's so-called Bridge to Nowhere, even though her version of the story has been widely debunked.

She voiced support for the bridge during her gubernatorial campaign, and the project was only called off after it had become an embarrassment to the state.

Another crowd favorite in her speech is that story about how she got rid of luxuries in the state Capitol, like a personal driver, chef and luxury jet.

"I put it on eBay," she says.

Audiences love this part, but what Palin never adds is that the jet didn't sell on eBay despite numerous attempts. The state eventually hired an aircraft broker to unload it.

i just want to know: if sarah palin can't even handle an interview with a reporter, how can she handle tough talks with other countries like russia? does the mccain camp think that the rest of the world is going to treat her with "deference?"

here is the deal.
we the people do not need, at this particular time, i do not believe, another person with this special relationship with God, where they and God have this plan and we the people apparently could not fathom how fabulous that it will be so nobody keeps knowing anything.
but it is from God.
and so.....................................................................................................................................................

Sarah says for us to pray that the Iraq war is GOD's PLAN. I know for sure that my GOD would not approve of this war, maybe her GOD the one she speaks to in tongue see it differently, in that case she can keep him/her to herself.

No questions from the press because they are terrified that she's going to say something showing how uninformed she is about the issues. They are running scared about this.

I blame John McCain for throwing this woman at our country. She's a phoney and unqualified with or without experience ... and the press needs to do their jobs and stop covering her. If the campaign won't allow access (althought I'm sure her ego would love it) or interviews, then the press should wise up and give her no coverage. But, please stop playing that corny stump speech of hers ... it's the most disingenuous bunch of malarkey I've ever heard. Go away, Mrs. Palin, you couldn't be more of a bore.

Looks like McCain would rather lose his country than lose the campaign. It's Campaign First, not Country First! How could he possibly think Palin capable of being Commander in Chief of our Country? We have the most complex and powerful nation on earth, and we have no idea how she thinks, what her thought processes are, WHO SHE IS! If she's so great, why would McCain keep keep her from talking to the Press. Can't she think on her feet? Does she always need a script? This is the way it is, and it's acceptable to people? Why would anyone want an unpredictable "Maverick" with their finger on the button that could blow up the world, causing a real End of Days? Does McCain believe Palin has a pipeline to God? Maybe she would be good at Foreign Policy because she knows how to speak in many tongues. Absolutely brilliant pick to win the election, absolutely insane pick to place our country, and the world, in this kind of potential jeopardy. McCain put his campaign ahead of our country. Unbelievable. He's not the man he was.

Since when did the Republican party take over the networks and airwaves in America?
All news organizations should respond to Palin's press boycott with a Paling boycott of their own.
Until she agrees to play nice and by the rules and answer questions fron the fourth estate then the
fourth estate should banish all Palin stories. What's good for the gander is good for the goose!!

I’m just so angry at the press an McCain/Palin dishing out lies; I just had to change my train of thought ta bit before I break something! I’ve been wondering what McCain is going to do when Palin starts campaigning alone (if she does)? He’ll be lost without her. She is so obviously stealing the Presidential show away from him, it’s pathetic! When I watch them together and she is speaking; I keep my eyes on him and it’s quite a pitiful site to watch. I don’t think he even realizes what’s happening. He’s just so happy that people are paying attention to him, he doesn’t seem to know what to do with himself. Has any body noticed? He looks like the old fool that he has become – certainly not the maverick he’s trying to make himself out to be. As I watch I keep thinking, please go sit on a stool or something until she finishes her speech – like Obama does when someone is introducing him. It’s obvious why Obama didn’t want to do town halls with him. It would have got the old man some attention. Oh well, if they do put Palin out on her own to campaign he’ll lose all his new found energy so he’ll have to get his side kicks, Joe Lieberman and Lindsay Graham back to stand there, prop him up and give him the answers again.

What's wrong little Sarah? I thought you were a 'tough little cookie'?

Are you afraid of a few little reporters?

Yup, yup, you like to throw stones at the Democrats, but then you play the 'you don't have the right to ask me any questions because I am Sarah Palin' routine.

You are a coward. What ever happened to the Sarah that said, " I have nothing to hide. Hold me accountable"

You are an airhead with a big mouth. And still a coward.

Just the person we need to bring honesty and dignity back to the White House.

The more Reps keep Palin muzzled, the easier for them to spin their web of mythology. All serious journalists, and the public at large, should demand better. America has precious little time to learn the truth about this candidate. We need accurate information, and we need it now. Yet here we are STILL awaiting Palin's FIRST unscripted word. What disrepect and disservice to voters

So much for "ready on day one". She wasn't even ready to speak for herself on day one. And apparently still isn't, unless Gibson promises to handle her with kid glove "deference".

As a woman, I am offended at the blatant tokenism to say nothing of sexism the McCain managers are showing...since when can't a woman candidate talk? This woman is supposedly a competent governor of one of our states and she can't speak for herself? Has any male been muzzled like this? Ooops..I forgot..the answer is yes. It is McCain himself..he, too, has become nothing more than a designated mouthpiece for his campaign directors. Question: are we electing them or their managers? Are we electing them by how they stand on the issues or how they look? Please, media, help us get to know them both, or let's just ignore them and listen to any candidate who would actually like to talk with us about what he is planning to do. this is nonsense..McCain's campaign is playing the whole country for fools...it is very sad...

I cannot believe that a VP nominee is so unqualified that she cannot answer any questions, and still people want to vote for her.

That is the same statement that I keep repeating. Something should click in the American psyche that something is not quite right. All of the candidates have spoken to the press. For someone who is suppose to be ready on Day 1, she sure isn't acting like it. All that the people care about is that she is a woman, but she give not interviews. Interviews goes both ways. It would help people get to know her outside the teleprompter. That is the other curious thing. It just let's me know that she not fit to be vice president.

transparency?

We are rapidly approaching East Germany status, like it was in the 1970's,

"What difference is there between the crowds of flag-waving Republicans and the apparatchiks I covered as a reporter in the old East German Communist Party? These Republican delegates, like the fat and compromised party functionaries in East Berlin, all fawned on cue over an inept and corrupt party hierarchy. They all purported to champion workers' rights and freedom while they systematically fleeced, disempowered and impoverished the workers they lauded. They all celebrated the virtue of a state that was morally bankrupt. And while they played this con game, one that gave them special privileges, power and wealth, they unleashed their goons and thugs on all who dared to challenge them. We are not East Germany, but we are well on our way. An economic meltdown, another catastrophic terrorist attack on American soil, a war with Iran, and we could easily swing into an authoritarian model that would look very familiar to anyone who lived in the former communist East bloc."
