LEBANON, Ohio — John McCain took a risk in picking little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as a running mate, but now the campaign's playing it safer. She's sticking to a greatest hits version of her convention speech on the campaign trail and steering clear of questions until she's comfortable enough for a hand-picked interviewer later this week.

More than 40 million people tuned in last week to listen to the speech from Palin, the 44-year-old, first-term governor whom McCain announced as his surprise vice presidential pick just days before. Since then, that basic script is all anyone has heard from her publicly, and her only interaction with the media was a brief conversation with a small group of reporters on her plane Monday _ off the record at her handlers' insistence.

Associated Press reporters were not on the plane, but an aide told the journalists on board that all Palin flights would be off the record unless the media were told otherwise. At least one reporter objected. Two people on the flight said the Palins greeted the media and they chatted about who had been to Alaska, but little else was said.

By comparison, her Democratic counterpart, Joe Biden, has been campaigning on his own, at times taking questions from audiences. He split off to campaign separately from Barack Obama the day after Obama announced his selection. They reunited at their party's convention and spent the following weekend campaigning together.

Biden's appearances have touched on a range of issues _ in Florida he talked about U.S. support for Israel, in Pennsylvania it was economics and tax policy. He was interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press" last Sunday

Amid growing sniping from Democrats, the McCain campaign announced that Palin would sit down for her first interview this week, with ABC. It will take place over two days at her home in Alaska.

And then?

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis has said Palin will "agree to an interview when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it."

Story continues below

"She's not scared to answer questions," Davis said on "Fox News Sunday."

So far, Palin has barely spoken with voters either. Since the convention, she and McCain have breezed through a Wisconsin ice cream shop, a New Mexico restaurant and a Missouri barbecue place, shaking hands with diners but not taking any questions. Photographers and television cameras have been allowed full view while reporters are typically kept too far away to ask questions or hear most of the conversations.

Her public remarks essentially have been excerpts of her convention speech, delivered while introducing McCain at rallies.

Her schedule released Tuesday shows she will attend a "welcome home" rally in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Wednesday evening _ her first major campaign appearance without McCain at her side and his advisers hanging in the wings.

To be sure, all candidates running for office give the same remarks over and over _ Barack Obama's stump speech has hardly changed throughout the campaign, and McCain has been telling familiar stories and jokes for months.

But none of the candidates in this race has been so shielded from the media, so protected from any spontaneous situation, and Palin's unvarying remarks give the impression that she and her message are being tightly controlled. As before her convention speech, McCain's campaign is briefing Palin for her first TV interview.

After a rally Tuesday in Lancaster, Pa., a group of supporters waiting outside to shake hands with McCain and Palin screamed for her to jump up on an outdoor platform, as McCain had just done, and speak to them.

"Speech! Speech!" they cried. She continued down the line, shaking hands, and then hopped into an SUV.

In her prepared remarks, there are always descriptions of McCain as a "man who's there to serve his country and not just his party." He's someone who's "not looking for a fight but is not afraid of one either." He "doesn't run with the Washington herd." He's the only man in this election "who has ever really fought for you."

And always the same details about herself, how she "stood up to the special interests, the lobbyists, big oil companies and the good ol' boys network," as a mayor and then governor in Alaska.

The people in their crowds, many of whom say they've heard these lines before, still go wild when she repeats that McCain put everything on the line last year when he said "he would rather lose an election than see his country lose a war."

She can be a little cutting, as well, when it comes to the Democrats.

"In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers," she says. "And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

She delivers the line, like many of her veiled criticisms of Obama, in a disapproving tone that still manages to sound charming to her fans. It is part of what makes her so popular on the campaign trail.

In Lancaster they cheered when she reminded them, as she did in her convention speech, of Obama's primary-season comment about how some small-town Americans are bitter and cling to guns or religion. She also claimed again that she said "thanks but no thanks" to Alaska's so-called Bridge to Nowhere, even though her version of the story has been widely debunked.

She voiced support for the bridge during her gubernatorial campaign, and the project was only called off after it had become an embarrassment to the state.

Another crowd favorite in her speech is that story about how she got rid of luxuries in the state Capitol, like a personal driver, chef and luxury jet.

"I put it on eBay," she says.

Audiences love this part, but what Palin never adds is that the jet didn't sell on eBay despite numerous attempts. The state eventually hired an aircraft broker to unload it.

Why is anyone surprised at this? Contact the news media and tell them what you think - don't let the Republicans get away with this. If we make enough noise, the media will talk more about what's going on. Can't you just feel the luster fading from the McCain/Palin ticket? Give it another couple of weeks and I think we'll see them self-destruct.

I wholeheartedly agree!! We should contact the MSM immediately and frequently to voice our opinions on Puppet Palin and why they're letting her get away with this.

Seriously, instead of (or in addition to) blogging here, we need to bombard the MSM and ask them why are they conspiring to help the Republicans HIDE the Puppet Palin. If they're not part of the conspiracy, then they need to boycott the Puppet Palin until she truly acts like a VP candidate.

From Obamabots, it would just sound like partisan whining, which it is...as bad as the Repubs whining about the NY Times and MSNBC...

The media are terrible when they don't shill for YOUR candidate, aren't they?

Palin's Office Launched Probe Into Ex Brother-in Law's Disability Claims

Published in : Nation/World

Palin's office wants $88,000 to fulfill a Freedom of Information Act Request for previously undisclosed emails.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin – collaborating with her husband Todd and several senior aides – conducted what amounted to a rogue investigation into suspicions that her ex-brother-in-law was faking a job-related injury as a state trooper, according to state documents, law enforcement officials and former aides to Palin.

The investigation was conducted using the resources of Gov. Palin’s office and had the goal of destroying Mike Wooten’s career with the Alaska state troopers, the documents and the interviews reveal.

She's probably not scared. It's the McCain campaign that's kept up nights worrying about it. ;-)

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis has said Palin will "agree to an interview when we think it's time and when she feels comfortable doing it."

NOT ACCEPTABLE. If Palin is the Republican choice for the second most important job in U.S. government, she better get her shiny pumps out her and start answering questions just like the other candidates. Otherwise she is going to prove everything we're saying about her in her absence: She is not smart enough, experienced enough, or honest enough to be a national leader. She is a stunt candidate, a one-speech pony. She's got nothin'.

How do they get away with this crap of keeping the Vice Presidential candidate away from the press? Why doesn't the press just boycott the whole damned campaign. Let them get their Repuglican spin out then. The only reason Palin was a good pick is because most American voters have their heads up their backsides. They've become so stupefied they believe the Press is tormenting poor Sarah. They have no conception as to how it is supposed to work. So McCain has his "Presidential Eye Candy", his lobbyist spin meisters, and the bottomless RNC honeypot and we're on our way to be screwed again.

Ain't Amerika Wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!!

First the Iraq war, now this.

If the MSM grew a pair, THAT would be news!

Excellent. We should have t-shirts printed and wear them everywhere we go. Maybe bumper stickers and buttons and yard signs too. I'd buy one of each and give them to all my friends as presents, too. We could probably get a discount for bulk printing. :)

This woman is being carried around on a silk pillow and is being given preferential treatment and that's just wrong. She needs to stand up and take her breaks like a big girl and show the world who she is and in so doing they will see that she is not a viable candidate. She's not qualified and when she's ready is ludicrous and should not be happening. Give me a break this woman is just not experienced enough to be VP of the United States period end of sentence. Too much controversy surrounding her and not enough accountability......................sound familiar? It should it just more of the same as we have had the last eight years of Bush/Cheney! All lies and no substance.

All true!

Just imagine for a moment that JMC had chosen a man for VP, with the same level of experience, relatively unknown. Do you think he could get way with this...shepherding him around, protecting him form the press? Demanding that the media be deferential?

If she has to be tutored for the next two months and hidden away, that is more demeaning to women than anything that might be perceived as sexist by Obama or the media

Give me a break!

What a cowardice way to run a campaign. ...The Rove/Bush/McCain Republicans are bullies which really indicates extreme insecurity and self loathing. They are the real cowards in America. If they had any confidence in themselves or their ideas, Rove/Bush/McCain wouldn't have to resort to cheating and intimidation to win an election.

For the past two days I've been commenting very little, just sitting back and reading comments, blogs, doing my own research on Palin, watching clips of Ob*ma at rallies and the like.

The polls are going south for Ob*ma; McDrill is gaining the momentum; Palin is not, as I and so many others claimed, the blunder of his political career but rather, a genius move; Ob*ma is not rising to the challenge but is still acting as if he's got a whole year until the election, rather than just 8 weeks; and we, his supporters, have been reduced to apologetics.

Gergen was right: Ob*ma nev er saw Palin coming any more than H*llary ever saw Ob*ma coming. No one saw her coming. (Exception: R*ve.)

There is still time, but not much; we need to work hard to expose the repub ticket for what it is: a brilliant but ruthless and shameful come-on that taps into every fear and doubt and worry and prejudice mainstream voters have. Forget digging up dirt on Palin, we've been at it ten days and it hasn't made a dent; the voters, many of them, are saying, "So what? All politicans have scandals, all politicans take weird positions on issues from time to time. We like her!" The ticket needs to be portrayed as a sham, for that's what it is. An old-fashioned, hoodwinking sham.

Yes we can, yes we will, yes we must!

abby4ever,

I don't think anyone saw Gov. Pailin coming but I think it shows we have to be the dumbest people in the industrial world. Any other country in the industrial world this women would have been laughed off the stage and the republicans would have dropped 20% after this announcement. Unfortunately in this country the media creates the narrative and everyone else follows. The difference between Obama and Palin is he has earned his respect by going in front of the people and stating his case. Obama did not surprise Hillary he beat Hillary by out campaigning her and having fresh new ideas. The republican party is spitting in the face of the American people and the media.

and having fresh new ideas...

You MUST be kidding...you mean HAD new ideas that he PROMISED and then ditched when it came general election season...

He has backtracked on so much, even saying to Bill O. there are aspects of the surge that worked...no it DIDN'T work, Barack, and why are you buying into Bill's BS?....it was when we bought off war lords who then turned on Al Queda and when Al Sadr calculated that it was better to quell his forces than continue fighting Americans...it had NOTHING to do with Bush, Mack, or Petraeus.

The Post Convention “Twilight Zone.”

Have we all awoken in a post convention “twilight zone”, where lies are spewed as truths - where the status quo is sold as change - where form has replaced substance… where image has replaced issues - where pit bulls are held up as defenseless puppies that need protection. What has become of our democratic process that has been replaced by this Orwellian Rovesk parallel world.

A world where politicians are no longer held accountable for their words and actions - no longer made accessible to those that seek the truth - no longer can be questioned without backlash or retribution.
Someone please wake me up from this nightmare and give me back my democracy!
