Singer-actress Barbra Streisand, who originally endorsed Hillary Clinton in the U.S. presidential primary race, has jumped on Barack Obama's bandwagon with both feet to sing for the newly anointed Democratic nominee at a Beverly Hills fund-raiser next week. Organizers say the hurriedly planned Sept. 16 event will probably mark Obama's final stop on the Hollywood political money trail before the November election.

According to political consultant Andy Spahn, a co-host of the fund-raiser, the evening will begin with a dinner for the Illinois senator and about 250 guests at the landmark Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Dinner will be followed by a reception in Obama's honor at the main ballroom of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, featuring a performance by Streisand and others. The ballroom holds a crowd of up to 800 people.

Seats for the dinner and reception together go for a whopping $28,500 per person, but supporters who just want to hear Babs sing for Obama can get in for as little as $2,500 per ticket, Spahn said. At those prices, the two-part event could bring in nearly $9 million, making it the biggest single Democratic fund-raiser for the current election cycle. The money would be divided between Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Streisand is a good Democrat and I respect her loyalty. But this is exactly the kind of thing we do not need right now. Having a high profile celebrity throw a fundraiser with such ghastly ticket prices, which means all the buyers will be rich people and most will be celebs--this is just stupid. Obama has proven his ability to raise money among the middle class. Does he really need this star-studded event? The harm it will do is greater than the amount of money it will raise. If celebs want to help their candidate, they can do so by volunteering to help rebuild New Orleans, or signing on at Habitat for Humanity, just like regular citizens. Obama ain't McGovern, Babs.

Why candidates need money to win is a good question. Each one should have equal airtime and government funded campaigns. This concert will end up soon on HBO pay per view. Not to worry.

All government funding is being spent on the WAR ON TERROR.

Your candidate shot down government funding.

That's a good idea, Agentlady007! I'm sure that everyone would agree that it is a ridiculous concept that candidates spend millions of dollars trying to get elected and for a salary of only $200,000 (?) a year. What a terrible waste of money and resources, but your idea struck me as very thoughtful. It is common sense, like the flat tax, although many would disagree about that.

Note: Flat tax - everyone pays the same percentage of income tax--just like paying taxes on goods or commodities--whether rich or poor, everyone is equal in the eyes of the I.R.S.

A lot of celebs already do charitable work and volunteering. You make it sound like they don't. We all bring our talents to the table. If Ms. Streisand's is singing to bring in donations, then so be it.
Have you donated to the campaign yet?

This should lock down the Jewish Vote! Thank you Barbara.

Later MechaStreisand will be rampaging at a McCain/Palin monster truck rally.

Giving $28,500 to any politician sure sounds like bribery to me. I imagine the "donors" expect some quid pro quo, no? What a system!

Perhaps the well-to-do Dems would like to see the country in safer hands, ever think of that?

Why is this not part of the "Anemic Fundraising" story. Hey, we're running out of cash, time to roll out Babs and the Hollywood gays.

You find it objectionable that the Hollywood gays would support Obama?
Certainly you're not surprised, are you, considering the way the Republican party trashes gay rights at any opportunity.
Best that Babs and these folks expend all efforts as it appears that the Republicans will attempt to steal yet another election, this time with the help of the Trojan Moose, Sarah Palin.

I don't find it objectionable at all. It just demonstrated that the Obama campaign is getting desperate. He wouldn't go near this crowd earlier in the campaign. Maybe it had something to do with those Larry Sinclair rumors. Are you sure where Obama stands on gay rights? Last I heard him say, he did not support gay marriage.

Why is it that when the Dems lose, the other guy cheated? Obama pulled that one when he bombed at Saddleback. A confident man or woman admits when they screw up or lose, they carry on and try to do better next time.

That is a very unattractive character flaw.

Cash trickling in, Babs wailing, secret visits with Bill Clinton...

Is that BO or do I smell a collapsing campaign?

Obama was just whining on the tube about how CHANGE was his idea. I'd like for him to provide some proof as to how HE came up with this innovative idea of CHANGE.

The Streisand fund-raising event will energize the wingnuts, but it's well worth the risk. The Obama campaign needs the money.

Fellow democrats we are at a crucial period in this election. Lets continue to donate what we can to put this "CHANGE AGENT" in office. I am a bi-weekly donor. I will make another donation now, I will also donate the night of the fundraiser. VICTORY is in sight.

All that money is going to the wrong cause - it should be sent to MOVEON.ORG, or some
other 527. Time now to bring out the big guns - and that means we start supporting 527's.
