Politico:

Former New York Mayor Ed Koch, who endorsed and worked for George W. Bush in 2004, is endorsing Obama today, NY1 first reported.

I asked Koch just now what prompted the move.

"The designation of Palin to be vice president," he said. "She's scary."

He said he was alarmed by the report that she'd triggered a conflict with the local librarian in Wasilla, Alaska by inquiring about the possibility of banning books.

WOW, THIS IS TRULY A RINGING ENDORSEMENT.

"In an endorsement statement, Koch wrote that "the issue for me is who will best protect and defend America" and that both parties were strong on terrorism.

I have concluded that the country is safer in the hands of Barack Obama, leader of the Democratic Party and protector of the philosophy of that party. Protecting and defending the U.S. means more than defending us from foreign attacks. It includes defending the public with respect to their civil rights, civil liberties and other needs, e.g., national health insurance, the right of abortion, the continuation of Social Security, gay rights, other rights of privacy, fair progressive taxation and a host of other needs and rights.

If the vice president were ever called on to lead the country, there is no question in my mind that the experience and demonstrated judgment of Joe Biden is superior to that of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is a plucky, exciting candidate, but when her record is examined, she fails miserably with respect to her views on the domestic issues that are so important to the people of the U.S., and to me. Frankly, it would scare me if she were to succeed John McCain in the presidency."

think this Palin honeymoon will soon fizzle out. She is new and soon she will be old news. The naivety of the American people is frightening. But, they did the same thing with GW and Cheney in 04!
They believe lies and image over substance and the truth. They don't look any further to verify this BS information.

If we are going to be selling ourselves as a GREAT NATION we must get past all of this spin and lies and work towards continuous improvement. That is what a nation does when they truly love their country.

I think OBAMA needs to address the issue of millions of dollars going to foreign governments when America is in such disarray and in need of repair. I believe Americans would completely support that strategy!

Mc Cain is 72, his father passed away at 70 by a heart attack. The odds of any VP stepping into the President's shoes are normally 20%. With his age and health problems, it's very possible that Palin would assume the Presidency at some point.

She's not ready on day one, and sane voters need to really consider that.

I think he is the tip of the iceberg. If the media does their job... Sarah may rally the base but she will sink McCain's ship.

The glaring word here is "IF" the press does their job. If you read the times yesterday, front page, and this a.m. 9/9/08, the press is caving.

The man's got to do what the man's got to do. But to choose Obama over McCain because he is afraid of that "itty bitty widdle girl," that's pretty wimpy considering his previous positions as a pro bush guy.

Read the article again. I am with Koch on this, that defense and protection of this country is HUGE! Seriously folks look at the FACT that there is no one on in this campaign with more foreign and domestic expertise than Joe Biden. Thanks Ed!

P.S. The woman IS scary.

People are not skeptical about Palin because she's a woman, TheNuff.
They are, or they should be, skeptical about her because she is contrary to almost everything that the previous generations of women have fought so hard to have changed.
Tell me. If Palin weighed 200 pounds, looked like Candy Crowley or Madeline Albright, do you think people would be all ga-ga about her??
Reality check. They have as much chance of "getting close" to her as those who thought George W Bush would likely have a beer with them.
WHEW!!

Umm.... you SHOULD be afraid of Sarah Palin. She has the potential to be disastrous if McCain/Palin is elected. She doesn't have an ounce of the kind of knowledge she would need to potentially run this country. It amazes me how quickly people are taken in by her, when they don't even KNOW HER! This just throws the argument out the window that people "just don't know enough about Barack Obama" to elect him.

People know EVEN LESS about her having only known of her for less than 2 weeks, and their ready to hand her and McCain the keys.

Pathetic.

I just got off the phone with my elderly parents. As "old school" Jews who have been scared by the Louis Farrakhen, rev Wright smears, they have sat on the sidelines. This Koch endorsement and his straight talk about what's at stake is getting them off the side line. Finally I'm getting through to them. This is a big deal for Jews in PA, Ohio and Florida. Spread the word.

Ed,

you are not alone. Palin scares a lot us, but she can be easily taken down.
