First Read:

The executive director of Jews For Jesus -- a group that tries to convert Jews to Christianity -- said in an interview with NBC News that when he spoke at Sarah Palin's congregation Aug. 17, he did not mean to imply that God was punishing Israel for not believing in Christ.

"What we see in Israel, the conflict that has spilled out throughout the Middle East, really which is all about Jerusalem, is an ongoing reflection of the fact that there is judgment," David Brickner told an audience at Wasilla Bible Church that included Palin. He added that when his son visited Jerusalem, "He was there to witness some of that judgment, some of that conflict, when a Palestinian from East Jerusalem took a bulldozer and went plowing through a score of cars, killing numbers of people. Judgment -- you can't miss it."

...

But Brickner defended the comments and said critics are wrong when they claim he was implying that terror is a result of Jews not accepting Jesus.

I think that J4J's message is a wee bit simplistic for my taste, but I do think that the organization is quite sincere ... and that "no, indeed, it would not stoop" to such a crass statement that "terrorism is the wrath of God." I don't happen to agree with their general line of reasoning but I do think that it is, to them at least, WELL-reasoned. The organization is no crackpot.

Anyone read a copy of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood lately? May have been a book banned by Palin if she had a chance. In it, an attractive woman fundamentalist Christian helps a far right political party gain ascendency over the US, turning the nation into a heavily armed religious state waging holy war, and at the core of the state's power is its control over women's sexuality and reproduction.

Sounds bloody prohetic to me.

It is quite an eerie (and exceptionally well-written) book that I would recommend. (Unfortunately, my name is not Oprah so I did not just earn a million bucks.)

I remember shuddering when it finally dawned on me what a name like "Ofglen" meant. And let's not spoil the tasty surprise for those who have not read it yet.

Thanks for the co-recommendation. And for those who just want a refresher:

QUOTE:
”That's not what I was saying,” he said. “That's not what I believe. The violence is evidence that sin has marred our human condition and because of sin and non belief, God's judgment rests on all humanity. And that's why God had to send Jesus, the Messiah to deal with the problem of the sin. And actually he became sin, and God judged him.… “I believe that violence is the natural outcome of the human condition, that sin has blinded the whole world to the truth of God in Jesus Christ.”

Wait... did he say that Jesus became...sin? So okay, in that case, the end of that quote would read:
"...that sin had blinded the whole world to the truth of God in sin."

*boggles*

Wut? Wow, double-plus-good, anyone?

I think the former Reagan advisor Elliot Abrams (supported Arms to Iran for contras, 1983-86) is a big supporter of Jews for Jesus.
The Neocons see the ease of exploiting religious fanatics as a tool to raise money, divide humanity and to hasten Armageden. (And to invigorate hatred and war in general).

Exactly that's why Palin is there poster child, she's a zealot, she's clueless and ambitious, the perfect combination

Local similar Jews for Jesus group preaches the Judgment aspect strongly. No talking their way out of that one.

Oh yeah right. The judgment was for innocent people to get run over by a bulldozer? I don't think so. I happen to think that God is a personal God, not a God of a country or an ethnic group. He knows our character and our soul. so I'm trying to put that together with the idea that judgment was that bulldozer? I think there are a bunch of nutcases loose around here.

A Jew who is for Jesus is NOT a Jew. It s just ridiculous and makes no sense. I have read some of their materials and they are as far out there as you can get. I find it a bit odd on its own, that he goes around speaking at Christian churches. Really he has no right to call himself a Jew because the minute he took Jesus as his savior he left Judaism behind. In Judaism, there is ONE God and his/her name is NOT Jesus....... These people really bother me.

Don''t you just love people who haven't noticed that a couple of thousand years have passed since the Late Bronze Age?

Me neither.
