I Like ItI Don’t Like It

John McCain's attack ad released Tuesday evening is perhaps the most outlandish yet this election cycle -- not simply because the spot claims that Obama lacks any substantive record on education policy (he actually can claim several achievements on that front), and not because McCain charges that Obama's lone feat is "comprehensive sex education" for kindergartners (a hysterical description of efforts aimed at protecting children from predators).

What sets this ad apart is that every article save one that the McCain camp cites as being critical of Obama's education policies either has far more derogatory things to say about McCain himself or goes on to praise the Illinois Democrat.

In the spot, the McCain campaign references a June 2008 Washington Post editorial that called Obama "elusive" on school accountability. That same editorial, however, stated that McCain "has not been forthcoming with any detailed plan." Moreover, when the Post editorial board revisited the subject of education last month, it found that "Obama has given the issue more attention" than McCain, whose plan was "both late in coming and still a work in progress."

Moreover, the specific "elusive" claim is in reference to a David Brooks op-ed in the New York Times that was noted by the Post. But in that piece, Brooks was far more critical of McCain. "Obama endorses many good ideas and is more specific than the McCain campaign, which hasn't even reported for duty on education," the Times columnist wrote.

In its press release accompanying the ad, the McCain campaign also cites an Education Week article which states that, as a legislator, Obama "hasn't made a significant mark on education." The same story, however, goes on to add: "Sen. Obama may have a unique perspective among the candidates seeking the presidency in 2008. As a private citizen, he led Chicago's portion of the Annenberg Challenge school reform initiative financed by the late philanthropist Walter H. Annenberg--an experience that shaped Mr. Obama's perspective on the critical importance of principals and teachers."

Additionally, during the heat of the Republican primary, Education Week ran a withering story on the lack of McCain accomplishments in the field, titled "John McCain on Education: Where Art Thou?"

"With Republican presidential contender John McCain poised to make a strong showing--or even win--tomorrow's primary in New Hampshire, it seems appropriate to re-examine his views on education," read the story. "That's not such an easy task. Education doesn't make the Arizona senator's list of issues on his campaign website. ... McCain is a campaign-finance, foreign-relations, anti-abortion, tax-cut candidate. Education is not his thing."

Indeed, only one article referenced by the McCain campaign doesn't, in turn, rip the Republican nominee even harder than Obama. That article (which is misleadingly attributed in the ad to the Chicago Tribune) is a July 2008 op-ed by libertarian columnist Steve Chapman, who has also argued for abolishing the Department of Education.

why aren't they talking about the "sex" ad more than the Lipstick ad??
this is disgraceful - Obama clearly has the young children safety in mind - what does Mcgrandad have in mind for them?

Yeah, I mean, what difference does it matter if people aren't aware of this? Is Obama going to put out an ad showing these contradictions? It doesn't matter if there's more substance and greater truths behind what people are seeing if they don't have access or an interest in pursuing them. As has been pointed out in another post, it's the Willie Horton effect here. Letting this stand without a direct and overwhelming rebuttal is going to be costly.

DON'T FORGET McCain is weak on economics. He can't promise more money for anything, especially education, as he is already cutting taxes for the rich and keeping us in Iraq.
Palin is weak on economics.
She was Mayor of a town that was solvent and left it $22 million in debt.

WANT MORE OF THAT ?????

They support predators, rapists, giving them a free ride, and are intent on raping the environment with hunting and drilling for oil.

WANT MORE OF THAT ???

WAKE UP AMERICA WAKE UP AMERICA

Why does John McCain not want children to know how to protect themselves from pedophiles?

This is crazy.

If you disagree with McCain's ad - write to his campaign! Do something. Tell them it's crossed the line and is shameful politics.

sign onto his campaign website and hit the "contact" section, then when it asks for a topic - hit "donations" (cuz they'll definitely read that email!), then type in your comments regarding the shameful ad he is running on Obama's education bill he proposed.

Stop the lies.

I think B H O punching out uber-lobbyist weasel Rick Davis would have the proper visuals.

Really, I do not espouse violence, I just think it would play well. I am not encouraging it. But we have seen parliamentarians going after each other for impugning honor. How much 'other cheek' are you supposed to give? When the other side is constantly lying and making up disgusting stuff.....how much of that can be answered with words? There is a limit. You wouldn't "stand" for it in any other environment.

Short of that, B H O should be ranting about how dishonorable mcPOW is, how mcPOW challenged his honor with this pedophilia garbage....and along with his Janet Reno fathering Chelsea jokes, the Cbomb on his own wife, gorilla rape jookes, etc....wonder aloud that if Palin really were some kind of proud feminist, Caribou Barbie should run screaming from mcPOW.

McCain has sunk to an all new low. This man is sick. McCain says "Country First" if you believe that you must vote Obama/Biden 2008.

Remember, this is the same bunch of advisers that worked for george w bush. They released TV ads in key southern states saying McCain fathered an illegitimate child who was (gasp) black. Now McCain is using these same people to run his attack machine?!

That is a great point. It is exactly what he said he would never do. I remember a John McCain who stood up for Kerry when the Rove-Swift Boaters attacked him. What happened to that man?

It was called a thin veneer facade. Faked, all the way. McSame was always the bottom of his class- a legacy at the academy and a legacy in his Navy assignments.

Always under-qualified and under-accomplished. Brave in battle? Absolutely.
The right person for US President? Not even close- no way, no how, no McSame.

Can anyone, even the writers at the HuffPost, tell the real story of John McCain? He stood up at the Republican convention telling a heartwarming story about how he learned to be less self-centered and more caring about others because he had two cellmates who took care of him and saved his life. But did John McCain really learn anything from that experience? HELL NO!!! He promptly came home to a wife that had been cripled up from an accident and continued his self-centered bullshit. When his first wife was trying to recover, cripled and dis-figured from an accident, was John McCain by her side giving her support? NO!! He was out at the Bar getting Drunk and picking up Pretty little women. He flirted with one little Bleach Blond to the point of dating which led to an illicit affair....Cindy. John was having an affair behind his wife' back because he was thinking only about himself, not his marriage or his wife. Will anyone at HuffPost point this out to the Readers? HELL NO!!

It is NOT enough to limit this discussion of the actual facts here among us who know and understand how the Repuglicans work.
This needs to have an honest, open debate and airing on both MSM and cable !
The Repugs should be required to backup their lies and distortions in public or be revealed to ALL as the lying dogs that they are.
ENOUGH !!!
Josh Marshall, John Amato, Kos - WE ARE COUNTING ON YOU TO LEAD THIS CHARGE and THANKS!!

Look here, the Republicans understand how the generality of americans think. They know if you can sound a message long enough, Americans will buy it. They know that many do not bother to find the truth. They know that many tend to be biased based on where they come from or what their natural preferences are. So they play to that and the horror: it works!!!

they also know that if they can cage the press, it will to their advantage and now what we are seeing is an outright snobbing of the press. For them to bring a relatively unkown governor and try and shove her down the throats of millions of Americans WIHOUT ANY QUESTIONING OR SCRUTINY is a most vile act of recklessness and irresponsibility. they have branded the media as sexist, if they challenge Palin just because she is a woman. so what happens, the media tries to stay clear while they continue their henious plans to discredit their opponents.

Now for McCain to come up with an ad that discredits Obama's attempt to protect children from sexual predators is beneath BASE. It is CALLOUS, INSENSITIVE and VERY DETACHED from the reality of the times we live in. He may tout all the experience in the book but to look us in the eye and speak of this in such a way shows an utter lack of common sense, decency and decorum befitting a head of state!!!!!

This whole campaign is just getting depressing.

I think what the McCain people really want is to turn off enough real voters (not the rabidly ideological Christian right crazies) and further cynicize the electorate about politics so that turnout will be low again, which of course only benefits Republicans. By obscuring the real issues of this campaign and obsessing about this superficial crap, the MSM are playing right into the Republicans' hands. But I guess it's a lot easier than doing any actual reporting. Thank God for blogs like this.

On the whole, the McCain camp's tactics are just disgusting.

And I'm getting so sick of McCain trotting out his POW record. Big deal. It happened. It's awful. But let's move on. And has anyone looked into what really happened at the Hanoi hotel those so many years ago? Didn't this guy crash his plane three or four times before being captured?

Maverick? I'd say more like a reckless flyboy with a juvenile mindset who doesn't care about anybody else but himself, certainly not his country.

It all fits with trotting them out onto the stage at the convention. 18 yr olds on 16 yr olds are predators in my state.
