CNN:

John McCain's campaign hit back hard at Joe Biden Tuesday after the Democratic VP candidate appeared to suggest Republicans who do not support stem cell research -- like GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin -- are lacking in their support of children with disabilities.

"Barack Obama's running mate sunk to a new low today launching an offensive debate over who cares more about special needs children," McCain-Palin spokesman Ben Porritt said. "Playing politics with this issue is disturbing and indicative of a desperate campaign."

The sharp response, indicative of the increasingly heated rhetoric from both presidential campaigns as the election enters the final stretch, came shortly after Biden said advocates for people with disabilities should support stem cell research.

The McScum campaign has no right to claim that anyone else is sinking too low after their latest ad! They have officially sunk lower than W when he accused McScum of fathering a black child.

Biden should not apologize. Instead he should make a comment about how one doesn't need to look very far to find someone who has been hurt by 8 years of republican policy. In this case one need look no further than Palin's own family.
Let's make a short list of other topics that should be avoided, lest Palin chafe under the remorse of understanding what her party's policies have done.

Husband- Republican union policies.
Daughter - Abstinence only sex education.
Son- Hope he gets through iraq ok.
Young son- Stem cell research.

FYI - George Bush is not against stem cell research. He is against federal funding for embryonic stem cell research which has had absolutely no benficial results as of yet.

All breakthroughs have come with adult stem cell research.

Thanks for stating the obvious. This site regularly reports on the adult and cord cell advancements. Bush's position that embryonic stem cells aren't necesary for advancement in stem cell research has been slowly (not there yet) proven to be true. This is a silly argument for Dems to make. Republicans will welcome the Michael J Fox argument and the Dems will suffer for it.

Playing politics? I love how everytime Democrats stand up for issues that affect millions of Americans they call it "playing politics." This is a great opening. Push the debate on stem cell research. Force republicans to answer why they refuse do give people with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other terrible conditions a chance for hope.

I say, SCREW THEM! How dare they dip into the well of faux outrage AGAIN? How many times are they going to try this? The way Palin milks this situation is nauseating. I was literally aghast at the way she behaved in her speech. I have very close friends with special needs children, and it really ticked me off to see her pander so directly.

Pander directly, that's called politics. Both sides do it in case you haven't noticed...they have been doing it for years, even the Green party panders....Politics, a very strange world indeed. We all need alittle thicker skin.

Obama: 'Lipstick on a pig'

Amie Parnes reports from Lebanon, VA:

Obama poked fun of McCain and Palin's new "change" mantra.

"You can put lipstick on a pig," he said as the crowd cheered. "It's still a pig."

"You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It's still gonna stink."

"We've had enough of the same old thing."

The crowd apparently took the "lipstick" line as a reference to Palin, who described the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull in a single word: "lipstick."

Here we go, feigned outrage by the McCain camp. CLASSIC Rove. Remember how outraged the Cheney's were when Kerry made some comment about their daughter being gay? Some things never change with these people. Yuk.

Bravo Joe Biden - no one better apologize for this!

The Republicans are going to use Palin's baby as a shield like they use McCain's time in a Vietnam prison. It's so demeaning to the Americans who are raising special-needs children or who have loved ones who could be helped by more research. Instead of chanting "Drill, baby Drill", they should be chanting "Research, baby research" - that would be a fitting thing for a parent of a special needs child. I hope the families of special needs children who think they will get an advocate in Sarah Palin see this!

Obama/Biden wants to do everything they can to encourage all research that could help to make lives better for all Americans. They will ONLY send our solder's into wars that make sense and make Americans safer. He won't waste American lives!

You have only one vote - make sure it will make America better and stronger!

Vote Obama/Biden!

Last I heared & correct me if I am wrong, but I have done some research....Stem cell research is not illegal. The Republicans are not against it they are against the government paying for. Any private company or individual can buy all the embryos they want & do research on them. The question is why aren't we hearing about private industy doing so...could it be there is no future in it , no profit in it.? So me how much success has come from embroy stem cell research world wide. Ther is some truth for you.

Actually, despite the barriers erected by Bush policy on this, things are finally starting to move along with stem cell research. I only hope my brother with kidney disease to whom I already donated one of my kidneys benefits before his immune system finally rejects it, which usually happens after 10-15 years.

I have every faith that we are very close to many break throughs thanks to all stem cell research, You many or may not want to hear this but I will keep your brother in my prayers.

True, stem cell research is progressing and we might begin to see major achievements soon but the reality is that the lack of federal funding denies a broad research effort that will be necessary if this technology is going to develop into something meaningful soon. Restricting such crucial research to a few well funded private institutions not only retards the process but also leaves the possibility open that, as you say, profit driven motives dominate rather than progress.

Your post is very short sighted.

Almost all basic research comes from the Federal Government's investment. Corporations and/or private industry don't do basic research because there is no money in it. Get it. We as a people invest in basic scientific research through grants to educational institutions because it benefits all of us, just like I pay for schools even though I have no children. (Education benefits society as a whole). If public and private institutions had no investment from the Federal Government and no grants for specific research projects companies would not provide the necessary basic research to keep scientific knowledge proceeding forward. Scientific research proceeds because of our common goal as a people to advance basic knowledge. Yes, other countries will overtake us in our scientific achievements if we fail to continue to support it. I really don't think that is where we should go but obviously you don't care. Let's hope more people support my viewpoint, because yours leaves us a nation going in a downward spiral.

A new low in the campaign - a simple statement of truth.

Not something we've heard much from Tumor and Rumor.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:22 PM on 09/09/2008

how is this low again?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:22 PM on 09/09/2008

Low is the celebrity ads

Low is saying Palin is not for earmarks when she lobbied and got 27 million for a town of 5000 plus

Low is gas tax holiday to pander for votes

Low is the use of 9/11 footage at the RNC - 2008

Low is saying Obama lacks the experience to be president then choosing Sarah Palin for VP

The GOP and John McCain have a monopoly on low. Let Biden borrow it just once.

EVERYBODY has stem cells. Virtually EVERY MULTICELL ORGANISM has stem cells.

You REALLY shouldn't be challenging someone else's knowledge when YOU DON'T KNOW JACK about what you're talking about.

They didn't even really block embroyonic research, they just didn't want the government to pay for it. Private enterprise can do all the embroyonic research it wants to...they just aren't or at least aren't advertising it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:35 PM on 09/09/2008

And it is just not possible that private money will advance stem cell research in a way to make a difference. The largest amount of money comes from the Federal Government for basic research. Basic research doesn't provide immediate profit, so private industry doesn't support it.

i work at a biotech in la jolla and there is a consortium of private labs doing stem cell research here. the very sad fact is, they have to keep the lab location a secret. why , do you suppose, would the lab location be kept secret.....

Research into the most flexible and promising area of stem cell research. What, you think that Palin has a lock on special needs kids? So she has one. SO DO MILLIONS OF OTHERS that SUPPORT stem cell research. This is not to say anything offensive against Palin's child. Stem Cell Research is a legitimate issue, and she can't duck it like this....like she ducks everything else.

Why not, McCain can duck it because he's a pow, only seems fair that she can duck it because she's a mom.

You are completely wrong, they (BUSH) has blocked every piece of stem cell legisltion. As well, your Party which is run by the Christian Coalition oppose anything to do with it. Too bad, perhaps they might have found a fix to help Palins grandchild...you know the one with Down Synbrome.

So using a precious baby as a prop is okay and automatically makes you the go-to person for special needs children, but actually talking about doing something to help those with special needs is "politicizing" the issue? Please.
