I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Sarah Palin's stump speeches have largely stuck to the same script (what the AP describes as "a greatest hits of her convention speech). However, one line that constantly shows up is that Palin said "thanks, but no thanks, to that 'bridge to nowhere.'" Palin's claim of opposing the 'bridge to nowhere' has proven to be a stretch, yet she keeps repeating the same line. Watch Palin use this exact line in seven different stump speeches since the end of the Republican Convention.

And I said "Thanks but no thanks!" on that Republican ticket to nowhere.

MSNBC.. Backs up the McCain/Palin campaign by making their talking points the headlines of the day. Everyday for the past two weeks.

The owners of NBC/MSNBC run no "news organization". They are just a bunch of money grubbing opportunists, out to make a fast buck while they willingly destroy America.

Just MSNBC? Heck, as far as I'm concerned this is happening with every "legitimate" news outlet in the country. The media, which was designed to be a cornerstone of our democracy, is destroying us.

MSNBC as well as every other cable news handler followed this today. MSNBC seemed to be the only one to see the absurdity in it, and MSNBC seemed to be the only ones picking at the argument to see what was really behind it. They called it what it is, Political cover fire to take the heat off Palin.

BTW Chris Matthews didn't have a "Hardball Sideshow" tonight because in his opinion the whole day was a sideshow.

And if the press ignores the statements made by Mark Halperin, of CNN, which profoundly capture exactly what is going on here, then they are complicit in allowing McCain's campaign to literally AVOID facing the media, where the public's right to know can be defended, thereby challenging McCain to respond to these issues, BEFORE WE GO TO THE POLLING BOOTHS, and the entire nation is misled by a pack of lies.

While some may argue the lies themselves ( some) are inconsequential.

Don't be fooled by such dribble.

Because this isn't about a bridge.

This is about HOW WE WILL BE GOVERNED.

This is about: YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW THE TRUTH, TO BE INFORMED, SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS.

Mark Halperin: "They're saying this on the stump as a core part of their message....it's in their advertising... If the core part of their message is something that every journalism organization in the country has looked at and says "It's demonstrably false," again, we're not doing our job if we treat this as just one of many things that's happening. We have 60 days to do this and we had better be doing it, and if she ( Palin) doesn't cooperate, the public should be told." ( Mark Halperin to A. Cooper on CNN).

As Amy Goldstein and Michael D. Shear observed in the August 30 Washington Post, Palin “has angered two of Alaska’s leading Republicans — Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young — by refusing to support their decades-long practice of securing federal money for the state, including Young’s effort to obtain $233 million for a structure dubbed the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ by critics because it would have connected a small town with an island populated with 50 people. In her short time in state office, she has repeatedly thwarted Stevens’s and Young’s interests and, at times, challenged their candidates — including their children.” Obama and Biden had an excellent opportunity to do the right thing. Just seven weeks after Hurricane Katrina, Senator Tom Coburn (R., Okla.) proposed to transfer $125 million from the notorious Bridge’s budget and instead devote it to rebuilding the Interstate 10 Twin Spans Bridge between New Orleans and St. Tammany’s Parish. The storm chopped up the bridge.

Coburn’s amendment failed 15-82. Obama and Biden were among the “nays.” They and 80 other senators preferred to protect the earmarking tradition than to assist Katrina’s tempest-tossed citizens.

I imagine she will be put in that Cone of Silence before her interview with Charlie Gibson. It's up to us to make sure the media is held accountable. They failed us before the Iraq War and they are failing us again before this election. Call, email, protest, whatever you must do to let the media know that we are watching this time and we are not going to let them get away with it.

She may have flip-flopped and stopped the construction of the bridge ... BUT SHE KEPT THE MONEY! And one must ask what did she spend the money -- Considerable millions from taxpayers in the other 49 states -- on instead ... without any accountability?

Sarah Palin took millions from Congress that were targeted for construction of the Bridge to Nowhere and spent it on God Knows What?

As McCain said himself, if it hadn't been for earmarks like "the bridge to nowhere", the bridge in Minnesota probably wouldn't have collapsed:

Here's the story at the Minnesota Independent:

John McCain is a RECKLESS OPPORTUNIST, and has lost his honor.

I find it hilarious that liberals criticize Palin for changing her mind on the bridge to nowhere. The same bridge that Obama and Biden both voted for. Does your hypocrisy never end?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:13 PM on 09/10/2008

No hypocrisy would be if Obama and Biden both changed their positions on the bridge to know-where and then they criticized Palin for doing the same. Get it right next time, silly conservative.

Obama and Biden are not talking it up like they did something so great like Palin is doing. Palin talks about the Bridge to Nowhere over and over like a broken record -- even though she is not telling the complete truth. THAT is why she's taking heat. This is pretty obvious, don't you think?

I agree with you except for one thing JavaCityGal... Sarah Palin did not tell a half-truth, she told a full-lie. In my book, to obscure the truth is to tell a lie. I really wish we would let the media stop getting away with the spin they do on the behalf of the GOP.

Hey, now that everybody knows about the Bridge to Nowhere, I think, since the billions of dollars we're wasting in this country seems hard for people to visualize, we should introduce a new standard unit of measure...the BtN ... Bridge to Nowhere!
After making a few minor assumptions, we can come to a basic conclusion that:
1 BtN = $400,000,000
and
1BtN = ~1 Mile
SO, we can sum up the entire Bush presidency in standard BtNs!!
The War in Iraq has cost this nation 2500 BtNs, or the equivalent of a 2500 mile bridget to nowhere!
Actually, a 2500 mile bridge could go a lot of places! Say, a bridge from Alaska to Hawaii, or one from Wasilla to Chicago so she can belittle community organizers on her commute to DC.
Instead of paying for the war in Iraq, we could build 20 BtNs a month. Just think of all the infrastructure we'd build and jobs we'd create!
In fact, our national debt could build a BtN that would circle the globe!!! 24,000 BTNs!!! I sure hope they build rest-stops!

Excellent post! I'm too lazy to math-check your numbers, but they look sadly correct to me.
.......Love your moniker!

And since we're on the subject of bridges - a poster on TP used this and I love it:

"McCain/Palin are a bridge to nowhere - Thanks but No thanks!!"

Excellent perspective. I just became a fan. Hope the BtN becomes a campaign talking point, and a standard measurement in congress.

Go to this web address and tell John McCain to fire Steve Schmidt. he is the one responsible for destroying a true patriot, John McCain.

http://www.johnmccain.com/Contact/

Schmidt is one of Rove's henchmen and will do anything to get someone into office. He has a satanic ability to rile up the perpetually pissed off right.

Enough about that stupid bridge already, everybody has been trying to bash her about that "bridge" since the convention and it's not working. Be careful bashing her, Biden has been in the Senate since Teddy Roosevelt was in the White House, it would take a bulldozer to dig up all his dirt.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:35 PM on 09/10/2008

Enough? So, you're stealing Obama's material now? Ever have an original thought? Why not just reply:
"Oh yeah--Clinton, Clinton, Clinton, Clinton, Clinton." You'd like for us to forget about the bridge. Believe me--I've tried, but some babealicious politician keeps bringing it up. Oh yeah--Biden. Biden, Biden, Biden, etc. We all know about Joe--and we like him anyway. He's a guy who will actually drink a beer with us--not scream that we're going to hell for drinking. Your vice-presidential candidate is a non-intellectual harpie who can't mind her own business. Let's not compare experience--any rich kid can get opportunities to learn (even though many don't). Let's compare intellect. Obama was the youngest editor-in-chief of the Harvard law Review--and not because of daddy; but in spite of daddy.
And be careful bashing her? I thought she was tough. She took on Big Oil. She took on the lobbyists. She took on her husband's business partner. Oops. That one she really did.

Hotwires - direct your request to McSame/Palin -- they are the ones who keep bringing up "that stupid bridge" - She's used it over and over and over again on their joint appearances, since she has nothing else to offer their starry-eyed audiences.

Or is she a pitbull only when the she is attacking her opponent, and then she is a fragile women when the criticism falls upon her! - What a hypocrite!
