Actress Anne Hathaway has finally broken her silence over the June arrest of boyfriend Raffaello "Vati-Con" Follieri. She gave an interview to W magazine, on newsstands in LA and New York today. Also today Follieri pled guilty to fraud and money-laundering charges.

Hathaway showed up for the interview looking thin and was on the verge of tears for much of it.

"As soon as I found out about the arrest, I had to get on a plane to Mexico to do a press tour for Get Smart. And then I spent a week in shock at a friend's house. And then I had to go back and do more press, and I haven't stopped since."...

She's been staying at a friend's downtown since moving out of the midtown apartment she shared with Follieri, which was searched by the authorities. "I have to find a place to live," she says numbly. But then her voice catches with emotion and pools form at the corners of her eyes as she struggles to articulate her messy mix of feelings. "It's a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden," she says. "But just as suddenly, my friends threw another rug back under me. One said, 'Go stay at my house.' And Steve Carell [her Get Smart costar] stepped up for me during an interview when someone asked a question [about it]. He said, 'At some point you're going to have to talk about this time in your life. You don't have to do it this week. I'll take care of anything that comes your way.'

"I've been shown such kindness," she continues, wiping at an errant tear. "Not everyone gets that. A lot of people go through tough times alone."

Hathaway has less to say about the beating she's taking in the press. "What's going on is so much bigger than all that," she says. "Though it's crazy that things like that Newsweek article have become small stuff." One eyebrow arches with ironic resignation. She declares that she has no desire to correct any of the misinformation that's padded much of the scandal coverage, though a week later she sends an e-mail addressing a recent Page Six item: "I did not abandon my dog, Esmeralda, and no one had to ask me to go and get her. In fact, the day before that particular news item broke I had arranged to have her picked up and taken to my parents' apartment." (Hathaway's mother, a former stage actress, and her father, a lawyer, also live in Manhattan.) "My dad likes telling the story," the e-mail continues, "in a funny/sad sort of way, that Esmeralda was at [their] house watching herself on Access Hollywood as Nancy O'Dell or someone asked, 'Where in the world is Esmeralda?'"

Read the whole interview, done to promote her Jonathan Demme film "Rachel Getting Married."

I wish Anne all the best. My husband and I (along with dozens of very affluent people in town) were taken by a con artist over 10 years ago. We didn't see it coming. The detective handling the case told us it is because we just don't think like a criminal... those thoughts don't even enter our minds. So I feel for Anne. It is not only shocking to discover you've been conned, but that sense of violation is immeasurable. She is a sweet girl... and young... and hopefully has learned some vary valuable lessons about trusting people. If it is too good to be true, chances are it is! Good luck Anne!

On one hand, I feel sorry for her. On the other, I've met her. I was involved in a promotion she was doing for a film, and although she was nice to the people who she viewed as important, she was horrible to the other people around her. Who knows, maybe she was having a bad day, but there are entertainers in Hollywood who manage to be nice to everyone.

I will save my sympathy for those more deserving. This woman hooks up with a guy because he is a millionaire, or so she thinks, and lives a life of leisure off of other peoples money. Then she discovers its all a sham. What has she lost? Did she invest money with him? It doesnt sound like it. I dont think she is the least bit concerned about the people who are the real victims. Why should we be concerned? Lets move on to the real drama of life in America!

She's a GOP dupe-
Why was she on the boat with her future hubbie,
Rick Davis and yes, McCain-
I know life is hard, but it was easy for her to set up the meeting.
I am convinced that there is more to this story...

I don't understand why you call her a GOP dupe. She supports Obama. She fell in love with this suave handsome guy, and she has now learned a hard lesson. I personally like her. She is well educated and has some talent. She seems quite lovely, but I have a feeling she doesn't usually suffer fools (even though she was the fool in this affair).

all women have been a fool about a man at one time, I think that says a lot about men!

I love Anne and think she has gotten a raw deal in all of this. Leave the poor girl alone and let her ex deal with his issues. He seems guilty as hell, but he conned many - including Anne. Let her focus on her career and find another sexy lover to share her life with. Lord knows a sexy rich man like that could fool many, and he did.

Entertainment news is supposed to entertain but I feel more like I'm being bamboozled. I say GUILTY by Association! Off with her head!

She's absolutely gorgeous and I think she must be a good person because she has true friends who are going out of their way to help her until she gets back on her feet. I believe she's in her early twenties so she still has a lot of growing up to do. She's making progress because, although she fell in love with a con man, she had the good sense and strength to end the relationship and move out before the proverbial you-know-what hit the fan. I know she's an Obama supporter because she attended the democratic convention in Denver.

The only bad thing I can think of to say about her is she has to be a major cause of global warming because her smile, even when she's hurting, lights up everything around her and generates enough heat to melt icebergs.

I wish her the best.
