I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Lipstick

What a trying day. What an insufferable news cycle. This is why Mission of Burma wrote the song "That's When I Reach For My Revolver." And this is why I am thankful that I have the good sense not to own one.

Chris Matthews teased the top of Hardball by saying, "By now, you may have heard of this 'lipstick on a pig' controversy." And, naturally, hot blood shot to both my temples. "Well YES, Chris. 'By now' I have, in fact, seen at least sixty seconds of your network's dayside coverage." But I restrained myself, because I know that occasionally Tweety will rise to the occasion, and shut some nonsense down, declaratively. One would imagine, that with the network pivoting to tonight's extra-Special Comment about...oh, what was it again? Wasn't it something that people think of as important? OH YES 9-11! Like I said...ONE WOULD IMAGINE that Matthews might be shrewd enough to not send his viewers into the media twaddle version of the Hadron Supercollider, where "lipstick on a pig" is shot at 9-11, leading to a black hole that would suck everything in the world that is not already sucking -- just as hard as it can -- into the sweet release of nonexistence.

But, no. Matthews proceeded to explain that tonight, "We'll talk to some Democratic and Republican strategists about it."

And I'm like: "TWEETY, PLEASE. Nobody needs to hear any more nonsense from strategists. This is a matter of linguistics and colloquial expressions. The phrase "lipstick on a pig" is commonplace, well understood, not freighted with sexist connotation, and it's not some sort of inside-the-beltway neologism."

Is it a swipe at Sarah Palin? Can anyone say definitively that it is? Of course not! And, really, how could they? When Palin is not gamely reciting her greatest hits on the stump, the McCain camp has got her locked up in Rapunzel's Tower -- updo in full effect -- away from anyone who would dare pose a question in her direction. For all anyone knows, Palin is a pig in lipstick, a silk purse sewn from a sow's ear, a turd in need of polish, OR NONE OF THOSE THINGS, but, heck -- I'm willing to reserve judgment until such time as she's mustered up the courage and the wherewithal to actually face the public she professes to serve and prove otherwise.

But the larger concern should not be with Palin, who, to me anyway, comes across as a perfectly capable brawler, deft with zingers of her own. Here's the major concern: The whole wide world went to bed last night, safe in the thought that tomorrow, we would all wake up and be able to say "lipstick on a pig" the same way we have done every bloody day of our lives. And I'll be good and goddamned if I'm going to let strategists, pundits, and news anchors take that away. NO NO. It is time for someone to say that we are not this stupid, that we are not this pliable, that we are not going to be led by the nose, and that, going forward, every single person on the television and in print who has the nerve to suggest that the use of the phrase "lipstick on a pig" is a deep matter that faux-experts need to dissect and decipher needs to be immediately trepanned with a railroad spike and thrown into a ditch.

I'm officially reclaiming "lipstick on a pig" for humanity. Further discussion is a non-starter. I warn you: THAT DOG WON'T HUNT. NOT EVEN AERIALLY.

UPDATE: Many have pointed out that Matthews made gamely efforts to shut this nonsense down as the show went on. Saints be praised.

Jon Stewart said a couple of years ago that our media is like a bunch of grade school kids playing soccer; they all run after the same ball and as soon as it is moved, they run as a pack once again.

God forbid any of them should show some independent thought or actually investigate something thoroughly when they can just run after stupid rumors and fake outrages!

You are right. Drop it. Like Will Rogers said, if you find yourself in a hole - stop digging. When it was first said, most folks seemed to think the McCain camp was going a bit batty with it. After all, it isn't as if Obama wrote the phrase 'lipstick on a pig.' But by adding the dig on Letterman, a brief survey is beginning to show that a growing number of people think that Obama is actually deliberately doing this to try and draw McCain into a mud-slinging fight. In other words, since Letterman last night, a new wave of folks who yesterday said they thought McCain was making much ado about nothing, may actually have a point, and it is Obama who is trying to flan the flames of petty politics. The Obama camp has already done a disastrously poor job responding to Palin. And already, talk of 'if he takes two weeks to respond to Palin, what will he do in a crisis' is starting to take off. For Obama and his camp, the word lipstick should never be uttered again. Obama needs to get back on message, stop digging holes deeper, and stop doing things that make otherwise sympathetic people who don't want the last eight years to continue to think Obama may not be much more than the same old thing. Because if it turns out he's no different than McCain - folks will at least go with the one who has the longer resume!

You can't cut this off until Obama apologizes to pigs everywhere. Know the difference between a pit bull and a hockey mom? A pit bull can read more than one script.

Ha Ha dh52179,

That's funny. I don't understand the big deal about Obama making this comment. McCain said the EXACT same thing more than once. My interpretation of Obama's use is that he was "throwing back" on McCain.

Now, on the other hand. Since Sarah Palin (or Ellie Mae, as I call her), is such a rootin', tootin' "shaker upper", mere words should not be such a big deal. We've all seen the photo of her kneeling with her dauther next to some poor animal she had just killed. She compared her begin a hockey mom to a pit bull. She's a tough cookie. That's why McCain chose her. Right? Cry babies............... They need to stop faking that this one comment is so upsetting and get on with discussing the issues.

Does that mean Obama will stop giving the same empty speech over and over? Oh sorry, that means Obama doesn't even have the fight of a Pit Bull -- it means he's just a Parrot.

No, now Palin can give the same, verbatim speech over and over. She can say she has foreign policy experience because her state borders Russia. She does have fight, but little brains. McCain, too, is more guided by visceral feelings than a strategic approach. Republicans like their politicians patriotic and dumb.

I wonder if any of the reporters realize they're on Day 3 of lipstick/pig coverage ... and not one of them has brought the conversation back to the real issues that matter to the American people - which is the point of all this (right?!) ...

Anyone who heard the entire quote from Barack Obama would know that his statement of "lipstick on a pig" was NOT in reference to Sarah Palin, but to the McCain policies. He didn't even MENTION Palin when he said it. McCain's internet ad used the quote out of context, without playing what he said before or after. You're right, the whole thing is a non-issue. Everybody needs to please, SHUT UP ABOUT IT!!

This is exactly why I no longer watch Hardball anymore - the first 20 minutes talked about lipstick and pigs --- total b^l l sh ! t. I wish Ru s s e rt were alive to see what Whitaker (the new NBC news bureau chief) is doing ... MSNBC has no credibility as a "news" organization (at least not with me) anymore!

HELLO! Is anyone home. This is the tech age and you people are reading this from a terminal hooked to the internet and I hope will respond to this on the internet. So ask yourself something. How is it that you can read and respond to it within a few seconds but the MASS MEDIA can’t even get information that they have proven wrong just an hour before to the commentator or newsperson so that they won’t allow this kind of stupidity to even be repeated. Why is it that on the major news outlets the top story is LIPSTICK ON A PIG? Why is it that you are only hearing that small town values are the only values that are right and that they are the only ones who have died for their country? What kind of crap is this? Just because I was raised in the city I don’t count. But what do we hear in the media on a daily basis? And the worst part is that its not just the conservative right wing media, its all of them.

It’s plain to see that this is not just an isolated case. More news for them and the country stays in a downward spiral that they are more than happy to cover. ENOUGH! Don’t let them get away with this. Flood the media outlets with your comments and make them do the right thing.

Just a suggestion. Instead of throwing away old tubes of lipstick, send them to the major networks of the MSM. They are the pigs for promoting this non-story.

Great idea. I don't usually wear lipstick (or any make-up; it drives me nuts) but I may go buy some just so I can send it to them!

In times such as these, for the republicans to be talking about lipstick is utterly rediculas and self-serving. I just read where the Michigan republicans are going to use a "foreclosure" list to keep democrats from voting from the address of the foreclosed homes. What a disgrace and how evil can they get. A vote for McCain/Palin is like a vote for satan him/herself. They are evil slimy people that should not be running for dog catcher. When I hear them say "the American People" surely that do not consider anyone other than republicans as Americans. Please don't tell me that there are more evil people in this world than good people! We would be better off if God would return and take us out of our misery. Democrats in MICHIGAN you have time to change your addresses on your NEW voter registration cards. Let the people of GOD stand up and take this election out of the hand of the devils that want to continue to drive us into ruins.

Leave it to those dirty minded filthy GOP's to make a common female cosmetic "gross".
We cannot fall victim to their constant dirty-minded interpretations of the world.
I will NOT fall victim to their EXTREMISTS views.
I WILL use "pigs-in -lipstick" when I want to.
I will use my lipstick without shame.
All those GOP's pretending to be outraged because of their own sick dirty minds is GROSS,
ESPECIALLY all those GOP women for chrissakes!!!!!!!
That's all they have on their brain
in these times, with all these problems
is FILTH.
