I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Lipstick

What a trying day. What an insufferable news cycle. This is why Mission of Burma wrote the song "That's When I Reach For My Revolver." And this is why I am thankful that I have the good sense not to own one.

Chris Matthews teased the top of Hardball by saying, "By now, you may have heard of this 'lipstick on a pig' controversy." And, naturally, hot blood shot to both my temples. "Well YES, Chris. 'By now' I have, in fact, seen at least sixty seconds of your network's dayside coverage." But I restrained myself, because I know that occasionally Tweety will rise to the occasion, and shut some nonsense down, declaratively. One would imagine, that with the network pivoting to tonight's extra-Special Comment about...oh, what was it again? Wasn't it something that people think of as important? OH YES 9-11! Like I said...ONE WOULD IMAGINE that Matthews might be shrewd enough to not send his viewers into the media twaddle version of the Hadron Supercollider, where "lipstick on a pig" is shot at 9-11, leading to a black hole that would suck everything in the world that is not already sucking -- just as hard as it can -- into the sweet release of nonexistence.

But, no. Matthews proceeded to explain that tonight, "We'll talk to some Democratic and Republican strategists about it."

And I'm like: "TWEETY, PLEASE. Nobody needs to hear any more nonsense from strategists. This is a matter of linguistics and colloquial expressions. The phrase "lipstick on a pig" is commonplace, well understood, not freighted with sexist connotation, and it's not some sort of inside-the-beltway neologism."

Is it a swipe at Sarah Palin? Can anyone say definitively that it is? Of course not! And, really, how could they? When Palin is not gamely reciting her greatest hits on the stump, the McCain camp has got her locked up in Rapunzel's Tower -- updo in full effect -- away from anyone who would dare pose a question in her direction. For all anyone knows, Palin is a pig in lipstick, a silk purse sewn from a sow's ear, a turd in need of polish, OR NONE OF THOSE THINGS, but, heck -- I'm willing to reserve judgment until such time as she's mustered up the courage and the wherewithal to actually face the public she professes to serve and prove otherwise.

But the larger concern should not be with Palin, who, to me anyway, comes across as a perfectly capable brawler, deft with zingers of her own. Here's the major concern: The whole wide world went to bed last night, safe in the thought that tomorrow, we would all wake up and be able to say "lipstick on a pig" the same way we have done every bloody day of our lives. And I'll be good and goddamned if I'm going to let strategists, pundits, and news anchors take that away. NO NO. It is time for someone to say that we are not this stupid, that we are not this pliable, that we are not going to be led by the nose, and that, going forward, every single person on the television and in print who has the nerve to suggest that the use of the phrase "lipstick on a pig" is a deep matter that faux-experts need to dissect and decipher needs to be immediately trepanned with a railroad spike and thrown into a ditch.

I'm officially reclaiming "lipstick on a pig" for humanity. Further discussion is a non-starter. I warn you: THAT DOG WON'T HUNT. NOT EVEN AERIALLY.

UPDATE: Many have pointed out that Matthews made gamely efforts to shut this nonsense down as the show went on. Saints be praised.

What's the difference between FreelanceWriter and horse manure? Nothing. They both stink. What's the difference between con artists and McCain/Palin? Con artists, unlike McCain/Palin, can not count on corporate media to peddle their lies. I am with you FreelanceWriter, "this is" truly "an easy game to play..."

Bush is the pig, Palin is the lipstick, let's move with it.

Pin the tail on the Republican Pig Policy. Do It!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rather than take the pig off the table, Obama should run with it. If that pig analogy is what the media wants to talk about, and what Obama means is that the McCain policy plan is one ugly pig, just say that, over and over. Find ways to describe all kinds of McCain/Republican policy (past and proposed) in swine terms. Link McCain to the swine; the media is clearly happy to carry this ball, and if he is clever about it, it will resonate as a policy point, and do so in a way that sticks with voters.

Fight back, smart. Bring a stuffed pig onstage, and make fun of it. Put the Republican pig in democratic events -- talk about the stink coming from the guys in the White House just now, and their friends who want to give us 4 more years of it. Have some fun with it while it is hot.

McCain’s little 1986 GORILLA RAPE joke needs to be a part of this dailogue as well, though:

“Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, ‘Where is that marvelous ape?’”

Hmmm...let's see...how many McCain points is that, Daniboy?

Tomorrow I think I shall check the comments from this story and donate $5 to Obama's campaign for every comment I see from you. I will donate in your honor.

Thanks for the motivation!

Oh Daniboy, your pipes, your pipes are keening. I'm sorry Dannyboy, I bet you voted for Bush in '04, after watching his play for a term? You should consider sitting this election out, you're a proven dolt, and unable to make a rational selection. Your country would owe you a debt of gratitude.

You are right. Barack (and not Barrack) did not have a copyright on "change." What is also true is that no thinking person ever imagined that John McCain would try to fool the voters by selling them lies about change when all his policies are the same as those that George Bush has pursued for the last eight years resulting in utter failure. Obama is also absolutely right: McCain/Palin are trying to sell change while continuing the same Bush policies. That is why the old saying is quite apt: " a pig with lipstick is still a pig."

O'Reily actually defended Obama on this one, so did Neil Cavuto.

Obama said some interesting things to Bill tonight.
1) Obama is for the missle defense shield in Eastern Europe.
2) Obama is for increasing the number of nuclear power plants.
3) Obama is for more drilling (as long as it isn't in Anwar).

I think Obama will eventually join the Republican Party.

So if Sarah becomes popular than Obama will you be ready to label her an empty suit celebrity? Will you label her supporters as a cult? Are you ready to anoint her "the One?" Or are you now going to change the rules and say she has the support of decent, hard working, ordinary people who are devout Christians? How come Sarah Palin's popularity is praised whereas Obama's popularity is denigrated? Oh you HYPOCRITES! I thank God that there are many decent Christians who refuse to buy into the false Christianity promoted by the likes of Dobson, Palin, McCain, Bush, Rove, Hannity, Limbough, Savage, and all the holier than thou right wing Republicans who invoke Jesus' name in vain.

Does anyone think that an “Enough is Enough” rebellion would fly? I have had this thought circling in the back of my brain all day.

Obama is the master organizer, the king of the grass roots movement, but he’s right when he says this is about US, not him. I read these blogs and I listen to the disgust in people’s voices when they talk about this… the MSM is letting so much of this slide, why can’t someone do something, we cannot be seeing a repeat of the Rovian slime/attack and distract politics succeed in putting another set of GOP thugs in charge of our country again.

I get it. A whole lot of people get it, but my question is “Why can’t we do something about it?” It wouldn’t have to be elaborate… but VOLUME speaks. It speaks profoundly. If millions of people stand up and make a declaration that this will not stand, we could take back this election…before the election.

Email campaigns..phone calls? Any suggestions? We have time to blog, why can’t we take time to email, or make calls? We could fill the inboxes at every major news organization, leave thousands of voice mails… It’s virtually FREE to do.

Mark Halperin TRIED last night. I was ASTONISHED to hear DAVID GERGEN say he believed the claim from the other side to be 'legitimate'. And Anderson Cooper almost cried when he found out that Mark Halperin was 'spanking' the naughty media for this obsession with such an innane topic.
This, however, is what the RIGHT must shrink to when they are trying to 'run away' from Bush, Cheney, Rice, Gates et. al. The candidate CAN'T say those names and in the same breath state CATEGORICALLY that HIS policies, whenever he gets around to revealing them to us, WILL BE different. Sooo-what's LEFT? Innuendo, grievance sexism, lies, half-truths, distortions, fabrications, 'dirty tricks'. Here's the message: " I really WILL be different. I AM different. I really care about my country. I've been waiting 26 years to show you exactly how different I can be. I have a plan to WIN the war in Iraq. I have a plan to cut taxes. I have a plan to create jobs. I have a plan to fix Education. I have a plan to reduce wasteful spending. I have a plan to return the government to the people. I Care. I feel your pain. BUT--you'll just have to wait until I'm elected and then the OLD MAVERICK will come out". Okay-Barack asked us this two weeks ago. Are you willing to risk 10% change, maybe, perhaps, kinda, sorta, if I think it'll be good for MY image? ARE YOU?
