Lauren Bush, George W. Bush's Niece, Debuts Fashion Line Under Different Name

Tuesday is tradition­ally an important day of the week in politics. Maybe that's why Lauren Bush, niece to George W. and granddaughter to George, chose it to introduce her first ready-to-wear collection called Lauren Pierce, a capsule line of environmentally sustainable styles. But before we get to the clothes, an obvious question looms: Why Pierce and not Bush? "It wasn't a conscious decision," says Bush.

I actually took a few classes with her in college.

She's a smart girl, and very sweet. We had fun one early Thursday making fun of our Sociology 101 professor, who was a complete loon.

So, of course she doesn't want to be known as related to him. I even teased her about him once, and she laughed rather than getting defensive.

More power to her.

(And I really hate that family, so I was super surprised to not hate her once I met her.)

Ms. Bush used her many connections to get there. Now she finds that it is expedient to change the family name. However, following the Bush' words, "those who are not with us are against us" (actually, a famous line by Stalin), and she never protested the Bushies crimes, but enjoyed the privileges. Now she wants to have the cake and eat it too.

You sure? Give the kid a break, ... and decide whether you do or do not want to buy her products. I think her uncle and grandfather are absolute boneheads. She might be a genius, and a great designer and entrepreneur. She would not be the first person to have a business fail because they are married to a bad family.

In America, the sword cuts both ways. Allow the children of the poor to succeed, and the children of the wealthy to fail. But allow the children of the wealthy to overcome the burden of their heritage, if they can. Don't buy her stuff unless it wears well, is well-made, and is made in America.

That's the rule. Not everyone's rule, ... but mine.

Lauren can't help that her family name is a liability, but she could be more forthright about it: "I want people to judge my designs on their own merit rather than through the prism of politics. I'm in the fashion business, not the business my family is known for." What would be wrong with that?
