UPDATE BELOW: PALIN RESPONDS

Actor Matt Damon spoke out on the Republicans' choice of hockey-mom Sarah Palin for VP. Damon compares her rise to a 'really bad Disney movie' and says it's absurd that this woman could become President.

"I think there's a really good chance Sarah Palin could become president, and I think that's a really scary thing... I think the pick was made for political purposes... Do the actuary tables and there's a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn't survive his first term and it'll be President Palin... It's like a really bad Disney movie. The hockey mom, you know, 'oh, I'm just a hockey mom'... and she's facing down President Putin... It's totally absurd... it's a really terrifying possibility... I need to know if she really think that dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago. I want to know that, I really do. Because she's gonna have the nuclear codes.
UPDATE: PALIN CAMP RESPONDS:
Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for Palin, called the comments "name-calling."

"It's not surprising that the Barack Obama and his celebrity supporters continue to tear down Governor Palin with little more than blatant name-calling," she said. "It's clear they're threatened by a candidate who actually has a record of achieving reform and change, while Barack Obama just talks about it."

Palin might be the next Dan Quayle. If elected, she will haunt my dreams. But at least she will be hilarious to watch.

Hilarious but sad. He is right that this is like a really bad Disney movie, but there would be no happy ending if it were reality.

If we have an oculist present, would he possibly look into the state of Gov. Palin's vision impairment? I'll suggest that her wearing of those stylish glasses are simply to imply a level of intelligence she simply doesn't possess. Not that that is a huge disgrace, but I believe she wears them solely to look smarter than she is. I think we're dealing with yet another Narcissist (the reference is GWB) here. Also, John Dean's book ("Conservatives Without Conscience") goes into great detail examining the connection Conservatives have with 'Vanity Issues' that are based on the now-well known, and nearly exclusively Republican, "Authoritarian Personality Disorder" (my claim).

Anyhow, someone help me nail this down. I say she doesn't need glasses, she only wears them for "Vanity" purposes, much like your local Real Estate magnate. I also don't like her much anyway, but this would add some meat to my disdain.

"Name-calling?" The only names Damon called Palin in the entire statement were "Hockey Mom" and "President Palin." The GOP and the McCain Campaign is crafting this myth that the MSM and the Left are unfairly attacking Palin and spreading falsehoods and rumors about her, when all anyone is doing is asking legitimate questions. Meanwhile, all the conservative dupes in this country are lapping up this "Palin as victim" b.s. being spread by rigtwing talk radio and others. It's amazing how effective their propaganda strategy is, too.

The film will be animated. The role of Sarah Palin will be played by Cruella DeVille and she will wear a moose coat and wolf hat.

I loved what Matt said. It is the truth as he sees it. I wouldn't want her to be answering the phone at 3am, though she would most likely be up changing a diaper. I can't wait for the debates when she has to actually answer a question on her own.

It doesn't matter whether McCain survives the first term or not! Palin is not prepared to be a VP more less President...I don't think being a hockey mom has credentials nor is the fact that she was Mayor of a really small town with only 18 months on the job training as Governor. Damon is right! It's scary to think about.

Well then, be scared, be very scared. Signs are starting to point to a McCain/Palin landslide with congressional dems hanging on for dear life.

Matt Damon talks like a pizza delivery guy who just happens to know how to act. Why do these Hollywood types think their opinions matter to thougtful voters?

Well 'Reg,' I'd love to know your definition of 'landslide' based on the most recent polls, which still has Obama in the driver's seat re: electoral votes.

With regard to Damon; the reporter asked, he answered. Everyone is entitled to their opinion -- if you think celebrities are full of it, why bother watching the video and commenting at all? What's funny is that his comments made it into the news cycle, probably because the actual fifth estate can't be seen pointing out little quibbles that conform to, I don't know, complete common sense.

Ahem...leaving aside the phrase "thoughtful voter" for a moment, Damon has a platform. If any one of us had one as big as his, we'd be doing the same exact thing. Not to mention, he looks like a Rhodes Scholar in this clip compared to how Chuck Norris looked on Larry King the other night. You could almost see the spit flying from his craw when he shouted the words, "YOU LIBERALS!" to Arianna. I thought he might follow it up by holding his breath and stomping his feet. Maybe he did during the commercial break.

Right, yeah...because nobody less than the said, "Jesus" has credentials to be President. How dare a normal person who lives an every day life of an independent, strong, motivated and loving mother, governor, or mayor even consider the thought of accepting the vice presidential nomination??? We don't want people like "us" or positive role-models in the White House! What an absurd idea! Yeah, there should be no one but disconnected, media-oriented, "can talk the talk, but can not walk the walk" individuals there, right? That's who America needs in the White House. Ya'll are scared, sad, people. Stop fighting for the wrong and do your research for cryin' out loud.
Palin might not have had forever in politics, but the time she has been in, she had an incomparable amount of good accomplished than Obama's had in the years he's been in. Stop following the wave of the media, and celebrities. Enough of this ignorance. Do your research before you make stupid and vain comments for other ignorant people to read and be influenced by.
P.S I was in love with Matt Damon before I heard him speak as himself, I couldn't be less impressed with him as a person.

Okay if she is so great, why not give her a few years to learn how Washington works. Why do we have to consider her now, before she knows her rear end from a hole in the ground. Hey ....she could run for president in 8 years.....but I think her true colors will have come out by then.

Dear God...please protect me from your followers....

Good idea. May I suggest that you take your own advice and actually do some credible research on this person's credentials and verifiable accomplishments before you take others to task.

If you've done so, lets see the links to credible resources.

Matt Damon isn't just an actor. He's a Harvard-educated actor who obviously has a lot of common sense. Let's not disregard his opinion because he has achieved a certain status in Hollywood. He's dead on when he says Palin's selection was purely a political gimmick to attract voters. McCain is playing a very, very dangerous game with the future of our country.

Mr. Damon says there is "a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn't survive his first term." according to actuary tables

You actually have misstated this sir. That would be the average for someone his age reaching 80 years of. The age he would be at the end of a second term.

And it is important to note that actuary tables are not really useful when applied to single individuals.

Finally I see someone else with real numbers! A person with McCain 's characteristics has an approximately .85 probability of surviving the next four years. SinceObama and Palin have about the same amount of experience (she of course has the edge on the executive), and the probability that Obama would make a mess of the country at a whopping .98, the obvious choice is a "no brainer", or as we say here in Michigan, "a Biden."

^^^^^^^^And it is important to note that actuary tables are not really useful when applied to single individuals.

You gotta remember though. There is a lot of mileage on that chassis.

What I see from McCain, physically, in these last few months of campaigning is a very stressed out looking individual. McCain seems to age 1 year every time he is asked a tough question about policy or contradictions of his past views that have amazingly changed so much in the past 18 months. He just doesn't look like a guy who has a lot of gas left in the tank. All i can say is, in this day and age the role of a president encompasses soooooo many aspects that most people never even think about. With the country facing all the problems that have arisen and were brought on by Bush and the "Republican Controlled Congress" we are going to need a person who can handle this immense workload every single day. I just don't see him being able to hold up, and we've seen what happens when you half ass the job like Bush has.

Republican theme is fear and distraction. RNC clearly gave him the ultimatum - spew the Rove tactics or lose. One sensible reason why McCain flip-flopped on every major position that he ran against Bush with.

So, we have Palin, a major league distraction that will continue until the first VP debate in October because she sets aside the policy debate in favor of the style debate. Style over substance.

Really scrutinize Gibson's interview. Consider it a job interview where the candidate's resume has the job title on it "executive of Alaska state government". That does not in and of itself qualify her to be VP. So, when confronted with tough questions ("thoughts on the Bush Doctrine"), she bulls***s just like a candidate eager for the job but clearly not ready for it.
Result? Endless media debate on the style of her answer - its not relevant that she understands complexities, what's important is whether she responds concerned. "Look she's concerned like I am!" Gibson let her off the hook by coaching on the Doctrine's intent. If I was the hiring manager, forget it. Next.

Can you imagine her with Putin or PM Brown feigning concern because she hasn't a clue what they are talking about unless coached?

Don't you want to hire an intelligent thought leader who understands and can grasp extraordinarily complex issues going in? With demonstrable skill in negotiating and *influencing* on a global scale?

Which of the candidates best fits that profile, then do the hiring.

Damon has "eight weeks" to find out what he wants to know.
What's he whining about "I won't know any more about her in eight weeks!"
He could do two Bourne movies in that amount of time.

The book banning has already been refuted.
It's people like Damon, with tid-bits of information and lots of celebrity, that
make themselves into the all-knowing.
They go on the talk shows and reveal why I give no credence to the Hollywood crowd...

Anyway, despite my disgust with the George Clooney clones, Matt, get off your self-righteous tush and do some original research!

The book banning issue hasn't exactly been "refuted", though she said she had brought it up more as a "hypothetical".

What hasn't been refuted was her fibbing on her Bridge to Nowhere stance, her the jet for a profit, TrooperGate, and the fact that her executive experience was running a state the size of Youngstown, Ohio for 2 years, with a budget surplus of $5 billion. I'm curious to know what kinds of tough decisions one has to make with a $5 Billion surplus in a state of 700,000. How much of a tax refund do we give each person?

C'mon people, Palin is a pointless distraction. Spending time trying to defend her experience seems rather futile. Let's get back down to discussing the old white guy and the Purveyor of Hope.

And on the "research from celebrities" issue, you may want to read my post below.

"Pointless?"

I've been a Dem all my life and I'm happy someone is creating a storm of controversy...perhaps the media will delve into Obama's theatrics as well. I just cannot imagine Obama as a president. Try as I may, I don't trust him and he seems two-dimensional to me...while I don't think that he is the only self-absorbed president this country has ever had or ever will have, his inability to self-examine, allow criticism seems almost legendary.

He believes he can be a strong president because that is someone who has to believe in what is being done in his name but he (Obama) doesn't seem to be aware of mistakes of his own.

Someone should start to dig...
