Michigan GOP Using Foreclosures To Block Black Voters

Michigan Messenger:

The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP's effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.

"We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren't voting from those addresses," party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed.

I am reporting this situation to the site in hopes of gaining some visibility. I'm a MI resident. As MI is Dem leaning (Granholm is Dem), the GOP is playing ads hot and heavy here. This does not surprise me at all - trying to profit from a situation they caused.

In one of the Republican Thugs National Convention speeches, someone (don't remember who) referred to the GOP as the party of Lincoln who ended slavery. What they didn't add is that the GOP later turned out to be the party that worked to disenfranchise blacks and of course were the driving force behind the Jim Crow laws. (The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enacted primarily but not exclusively in the Southern and border states of the United States, between 1876 and 1965. They mandated de jure segregation in all public facilities, with a "separate but equal" status for black Americans and members of other non-white racial groups.) And, of course fought civil rights legislation in the 60's.

Looks like they are up to their old dirty tricks again.

This is truly unbeleivable. What if they rent and don't even know the property has been put in foreclosure? Looks like some "community organizing" is needed to get affected voters to vote early if possible so theer is resolution time or vote absentee. Maybe the Obama campaign needs to address the people through TV ads.

The REPUBLICANS hate anything that helps the poor and the Middle Class. The want to make all the money and to hell with the rest of America. The so called religous right are like sheep being led to slaughter, they follow what ever the preacher tells them.

I was once a member of a right wing church and the pressure that is leveled at the members is tremendous. Ever sense religion has invaded our voting process our country has gone way down in stature. The Religous Right use God in such a disgusting way that it sickens me. I am a Christian but my God is not hateful or judgmental, and religion needs to be taken out of politics.

The men who wrote our Constitution specifically wrote that Religion and Government were to nbe seperate, the knew what religous prosecution was.

America needs to WAKE UP and vote religion out of the White House. We need to stop being so llazy and make the Politicans accountable for what they do. They work for us the money they spend is our tax money. I have been watching C-Span and I am disgusted by what has been going on in WAshington. Until we wake up and vote out the dead beats that do nothing for us, Americans will get poorer, jobs will pay us even less than they do now and benefits will be a distant memory.

I am really scared and worried that my grandkids will have no futures.

If you read the article closely, you will see that the institutions foreclosing on these properties has strong Republican ties... even being housed in the same building as McCain.

Information about foreclosure proceedings should be confidential -- yet the Republican Party seems to have access to the list of those being foreclosed?

At the least, Congressional hearings should be instituted IMMEDIATELY on this whole process. It's shameful, it's unAmerican, and it foretells exactly what the next four years would be like under McCain.
