I Like ItI Don’t Like It

On the eve of the seventh anniversary of 9/11, Keith Olbermann delivered a special comment slamming Republicans for their exploitation of 9/11 for political purposes.

Watch (text below):

Text of Special Comment:

As promised, a Special Comment about our sad anniversary tomorrow.

Or, more correctly, what our sad anniversary tomorrow has been turned into by the presidential administration, and the current Republican candidates for President and Vice President.

This is supposed to be a day of remembrance. Remembrance of the attack, remembrance of the national unity which followed it.

Most important of all, remembrance of the dead.

Story continues below
advertisement

But 9/11 has become a brand name. A Republican campaign slogan. Propaganda of the lowest form. 9/11 has become 9/11 with a trademark logo.

9/11 (TM) has sustained a president who long ago should have been dismissed, or impeached. It has kept him and his gang of financial and constitutional crooks in office without -- literally -- any visible means of support.

9/11 (TM) has made possible the greatest sleight-of-hand in our nation's history.

The political party in office at the time of the attacks, at the local, state and national levels, the party which uniformly ignored the warnings and the presidential administration already through twenty percent of its first term and no longer wet behind the ears, have not only thus far escaped any blame for the malfeasance and criminal neglect that allowed the attacks to occur, but that presidency and that party, have managed to make it seem as if the other political party would be solely and irredeemably responsible for any similar catastrophe in the future.

Thus, Sen. McCain, were you able to accomplish a further inversion of reality at your party's nominating convention last week.

There was the former Mayor of the City of New York, the one who took no counter-terrorism measure in his seven years in office between the first attack on the World Trade Center, and the second attack.

Nothing, except to insist, despite all advice and warning, that his Emergency Command Center be moved directly into the World Trade Center.

Yet there was this man, Sir, Rudolph Giuliani, quite succinctly dismissed as "A Noun, a Verb, and 9/11," and repudiated even by Republican voters, transformed into the keynote speaker, Sen. McCain at your convention.

And his childish, squealing, braying, Tourette's-like repetition of 9/11 (TM), was greeted not as conclusive evidence that he is consumed by massive guilt - hard-earned guilt, in fact but rather as some kind of political tour-de-force, an endorsement of your Vice Presidential nominee, a rookie governor , a facile and slick con artist.

The blind endorsing the bland, to a chorus of 9/11 (TM), 9/11 (TM), 9/11 (TM.)

Your ringing mindless cheer of "We've Kept You Safe Since Then."While nobody asks "doesn't then count?"

All of this, sadistically disrespecting the dead of New York, and Washington, and Shanksville. Endorsed, Sen. McCain. Exploited, Sen. McCain. Trademarked, Sen. McCain by you.

And yet of course the exact moment in which Sen. McCain's Republicans showed the nation exactly how far they have fallen from the Better Angels of Mr. Lincoln's Nature, came the next night.

The television networks were told that the Convention would pause, early in the evening, when children could still be watching, for a 9/11 Tribute, and they were encouraged to broadcast it.

What we got was not a tribute to the dead of 9/11, nor even a tribute to the responders, or the singularity of purpose we all felt. The Republicans gave us sociological pornography, a virtual snuff film.

Years ago, responsible television networks, to the applause of the nation, and the relief of its mental health authorities, voluntarily stopped showing the most graphic of the images of the World Trade Center, except with the strongest of warnings.

And yet, the Republicans, at their convention, having virtually seized control of the cable news operations, showed the worst of it.

This is all anyone with a conscience can show you of what the Republicans showed you. The actual collapse of the smoking towers.

A fleeting image of what might have been a victim leaping to his death from a thousand feet up. And something new. From this angle, ground-level, perfectly framed, images, of the fireball created when the second plane hit the second tower.

It was terrifying. After all its object was to terrify. Not to commemorate, not to call for unity, not to remember the dead. But to terrify.

To open again the horrible wounds, to brand the skin of this nation with the message -- as hateful as the terrorists' own, that you must vote Republican or this will happen again and you will die.

And just in case that was not enough, to also dishonestly and profanely conflate 9/11 with the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis, to stoke the flames of paranoia about another Middle Eastern Nation.

This was a 9/11 Tribute. Not to the dead, nor to the unity. But a tribute to how valuable 9/11 has been as a political tool for the Republican Party. 9/11... (TM.)

Sen. McCain, you had promised us a clean campaign. You could be Snow-White the rest of the way, Sir, yet that manipulative videotape from your convention should tar you always in the minds of decent Americans.

And still, as this seventh 9/11 (TM) approaches that, Sir, is not the worst of your contributions to the utter politicizing of a day that should be sacrosanct to all of us.

Hard to believe, but the Senator has done worse with 9/11 and the evil behind it.

We heard it last week in Minnesota, we've heard it off and on since January but Senator McCain said it most concisely in June.

"Look," he said. "I know the area, I've been there, I know wars, I know how to win wars, and I know how to improve our capabilities so that we will capture Osama bin Laden -- or put it this way, bring him to justice. We will do it. I know how to do it."

Sen. McCain seems to be quite serious, that he and he alone, not the CIA, nor the U.S. Military, nor the current President can capture bin Laden.

Thus we must take him at his word, that this is no mere ludicrous campaign boast.

We must assume Sen. McCain truly believes he is capable of doing this, and has been capable of doing this, since last January. "We will capture Osama bin Laden... we will do it. I know how to do it."

Well then, Senator, you'd better go and do it hadn't you?

Because, Sir, if a man or woman in this nation, Democrat or Republican, had a clear and effective means of capturing or killing Osama bin Laden...

If that person had been advertising his claim, Senator for eight months.

But if that person not only refused to go to responsible authorities in government and advise them of this plan to catch bin Laden, but further announced he would not even begin to enact this secret plan to corral the world's most hated man until the end of next January.

What would be your description of such an individual, Senator? Charlatan? Do-nothing? Opportunist? Sen. McCain, if you have, if you have had a means of capturing Osama bin Laden, and you do not immediately inform some responsible authority of the full scope of that plan, you are to some degree great or small aiding and abetting Osama bin Laden.

If you could assist in capturing him now, Sen. McCain, but you have chosen not to you, Sir, have helped Osama bin Laden stay free.

Free to inspire and supervise the terrorists. Free to plan or execute attacks here.

You, Sir, are blackmailing some portion of the American electorate into voting for your party, by promising to help in the capture of bin Laden only if you are made president!

I'd rather win an election than catch bin Laden! No more cynical calculation has ever been made in this nation's history, Sir. If you lose the election, Senator, are you not going to tell the President-Elect?

Are you intending to keep this a secret until the next election and your party's next nominee? Senator, as you and your Republicans shed your phony, crocodile, opportunistic tears tomorrow on 9/11 TM, in front of the utterly disingenuous banner "Country First," the fact is, you have shown that it is John McCain first, and the country last.

The fact is, Sir, by holding out on your secret plan to catch bin Laden by searing those images into our collective wounded American psyche at your nomination last week, terrorists are not what you, John McCain, fight. Terrorists are what you, John McCain, use.

Sirs and Madams.
We were on our way to get Osama until some babble mouth politician let it out how we were tracking him.
If my info is right that was Dumb-Dumb Durbin from Illinois.
Politians need to know that secrets need kept. If in the military I did such a thing I would be behind bars for quite a stay.
IMHO

Thank you so much, Keith. Is it possible, to order a dozen of you?

McCain is THE MOST DANGEROUS, CRAZY, EROTIC & DUMB.

"Sarah The Barracuda" his VP is even dumber than McCain and she is the most unqualified for a VP, which is a 24/7 job. This is someone who said in an interview. "What does a VP do, exactly?
Republicans get it through your thick head, you are elected a VP, Not "MOTHER OF THE YEAR." If that is what you want then you should go to a PTA meeting.

McCain and his Campaign keep saying, we are Country 1st and the rest of America is me 1st, and Country 2nd.

Well, McCain read your own advisers comment below, you are all SICK & DESPERATE people who will say and do anything to win this election at ANY COST.

boy the blinders are up aren't they. This was not a time to politick, a time to generate hate and yet apparently you saw it. I saw a man who was praising the work of others. The heroes of the day and those who are heroes everyday.

Then I counted the I's that Obama gave out. He could not talk about anyone but himself. Egocentric I see clearly.

Yea, like Mccain never talks about his POW experience right? Even when he is accused of milking it, he cannoy help himself. I hear Obama talking about what he will do for US and OUR country. Unity and when you look at his crowds, you can feel the love he generates. But of course there are always people who hate the thought of all that love in one place.

I wonder if Keith puts any blame what so ever on the Clinton admin for 9/11... it seems as though his blind hatred for anything that isn't liberal has made him irrelevant.

Thank YOU, Keith Olberman!

From a view who also lost friends on 9/11, I concur with Keith one hundred precent. 9/11 is a sacred day and should always be reflected with humility and a deep abiding respect. Using the footage of 9/11 at the GOP Convention was disgustingly inappropriate and insensitive for the families and of us who lost dear friends that day. It was painful to see the insensitivity regarding 9/11 used politically for only one purpose, to again make us afraid. The GOP should hang their heads in shame. I began crying when I was subjected again to those images, and I am a conservative. The GOP's caustic tone at their convention and the continual use of 9/11 has once again shown that they really don't care about those of us who lost loved ones. We don't need to be reminded HOW to remember 9/11. We will always remember that day for the rest of our lives. So do me a favor Republicans from a republican viewer, ENOUGH! Your lack of respect along with the caustic tone of your Convention has made my mind up for me this election cycle. I will NOT be voting McCain/Palin. I want no part of a party who has stooped so low. I am so ashamed to be a Republican, I will be changing party's and registering as an Independent!

Even I, a lifetime Democrat, thought Keith lost it on this one. Unfortunately, his rants like this at against
9/11 and Rudy, just feeds the fire for the Republicans and will lose us the independent vote in Florida.
I think he needs to take a long vacation until after the election.

First it was Vietnam and now 9/11. The Repugs have used these to bolster their arguements that the Dems are weak on defense and only the GOP can save the Americans from "attacks on America". Blatant lie? Despicable? You bet!!!

BUT, can one explain that why this has been going on for over 3 decades and why the Dems have not been able to reverse opinions and this inane message since then?! I have alsways maintained that the Dems either let the Repugs drive the message and narratives and/or just bend over and take it!!! Mondale, Dukakis, Kerry and now Obama ...

As usual, Mr. Olbermann, you can have a speaking force that leaves NO DOUBT how you feel! AND, again, you said what needed to be said for all Americans that have suffered through the past 7 1/2 years of moral and financial decay of our way of life here and all over the world.

ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

I am always amazed how your many bosses there at MSNBC (commonly referred to as part of the "corporate owned media") allow you the freedom of press that is so much missing in our nation. The Republican war mongers, influence peddlers, lobbyists and Rovian led spin masters have easily led all of us to the brink of a national collapse that could only be compared, I think, to the fall of the Roman Empire. Four more years of leadership under the Blinky McSame/Palin regime would SURELY complete the task!

Please accept my thanks for all you do to express my feelings of indignation and anger. YES, Mr. Oblermann, I am a proud supporter of Mr. Obama because I have taken the time to read the facts in sites such as The Huffington Post AND the many comments, in addition to posting my own comments. I must admit, also, that I do get most of my news on-line (and your show).

This is OUR Time - This is OUR Moment.

I have nothing to say but "THANKS" for articulating EXACTLY my unwavering respect for Keith. His thoughtful and brave mission of giving us the news , the TRUTH. Thank goodness for MSNBC ripping away the curtain of LIES and misrepresentations. that these "spots" even are carried by all networks , because they are paid for, that is their only criteria, does the American people a great disservice. There are way too many "low info" people who will just swallow that pile of lies whole.
My hope is that enough people really put "Country First" and vote for a "Man with the plan" to repair these many years of the TREASONOUS reign of King George and his dissemblers of our Country.
Tim Russert is missed terribly, but Keith, Chris, and now Rachel have picked up that mantle and "wear it well"

Actually was following your message until you started the name calling. Why is it that folks feel they need to revert to 2nd grade in making their political points. I know I'm in the minority here, but I just find it impossible to take anyone seriously who reverts to name calling. Hence my inability to appreciate Olbermann, the name calling king.

Well, I see you Obamites have a new mantra " enough is enough", Cute !! What does it mean ??

You need more sources of information ,bud, you are not up to date. Olbermann is on his way OUT!!; he will not be anchoring the debates or other election coverage, sorry !!
Have you read about Obama's days in Chicago ? have you ??? If you did you would know he can't cut it; he is not what you think. ( no results, no accomplishments, again sorry !)
"this is our time, this is our moment " did you know this is from a Bono song?? Well, there is a NEW song in town, and it is NOPE, this ain't your time . America will elect McCain / Palin and Olberman will likely go back to Sports.

Yes! Edward R. Murrow Lives!
Powerful and refreshing editorial, thank you.
K. O. explains so well why the anniversary of the tragedy we know and remember as 9-11 made me feel sick in the days as it approached and on the day itself. Watching the images and hearing the speeches from men who have made their political careers on the back of this event made me feel nauseous and I now better why with Olberman's explanation.
I am glad we still have a free press with different voices and Keith Olberman has not lost his job expressing his opinions.

I wonder what MSNBC management is trying to prove by having Olbermann's show replaced in the 11pm PDT time slot tonight with Brokaw's blow by blow replay of the September 11th atrocities? Is this rubbing Keith's nose in it for his Special Comment last night?

Just a clue to MSNBC management ... there is nothing NEW to be learned from watching those poor people die in slow motion all over again ... it isn't respectful ... it is simply gratuitous.

Unless Brokaw and MSNBC management are trying to inspire the same feeling of horrified awe one experiences when seeing the Hindenburg Disaster ... in which case they are beneath contempt, like the Republicans, for what they pulled at their Convention.

Here's a hint, if you are actually running a news organization, why not point out that in the seven years since the 9/11 murders the victims have yet to receive justice instead of punishing us and Keith by giving Bin Laden's a victory lap.

I realize why Keith was removed from his duties at MSNBC. Even the leftist leaning of the left at NBC would find it hard to believe that the rants of this lunatic could resemble a "news man". K.O. is offensive, to any level headed person. We had better remember 9/11. We had better not forget. it is not a republican mantra it is an American mantra. Possibly the democrats would be better served it they did not walk to the beat of some misguided political correctness. The terrorist are our enemies. Enemies of Americans everywhere. K.O. has more compassion and respect for terrorists than for our President, our senators or our people and has no real compassion for all who lost loved ones on that dreadful day. I think 7 years of safety is a good thing. Possibly MSNBC can get back to reporting news, not promoting doctrines and diatribes from a deranged word master who paraded himself as a news commentator. Good bye K.O. and good riddance. You have spewed your hate and venom for far too long.

He never told us to forget 9/11. How could we ever, the way it is drilled into our heads? Especially now with elections coming up. Generating fear is not a way to run an election. I get you Keith and you are spot on! This is an illegal war where the Bush administration changes the rules as they go. What ever happened to freedom of press? Maybe someone got scared of the consequences if more people thought for themselves and not what is fed to us. Keep yourself sheltered. The days of free press are long gone, but I really appreciate the efforts made by Mr. Keith Oberman. Much respect for the passion and honesty which is extremely rare these days. Honesty and intelligence, even more rare. But thanks for the effort. You died trying and we will honor you for it. I am boycotting Gregory in your honor. That will always be your spot. We will be looking for you elsewhere, Keith. WE LOVE YOU!!!

Today's schedule, the idea of meeting at ground zero and laying off the campaign fight for a day to remember the tragedy of 9-11, was BARACK OBAMA'S idea! yes Sen Mccain, in front of the cameras, THANKED Senator Obama for coming.

The replay of 9/11 in grisly detail is going on again -- with MS/NBC tonight. It is actually showing "9/11 As It Happened" -- the minute-by-minute original coverage. It, like the Republican movie, an exploitation different only in its purpose. The Republican purpose: political gain. The MS/NBC purpose: viewership.

That damnable footage serves little current purpose. Every thinking persoon "got it" that day that there are terrorists and that we need to fight them. Every person with half a brain also knows that the Bush Administration has badly botched the response -- dropping the ball in Afghanistan after a good start via the contingency planning done during the Clinton years (cf. Richard Clarke), going to war against an innocent (for 9/11 purposes) Iraq, bankrupting the country, weakening our military, generating over 4,000 American GI deaths, 30,000+ acknowledged war-related injuries, and widespread Iraqi deaths and injuries as well as unlimited misery.

And, now, the Republicans, after leaving us weaker than on 9/12/2001, are again arguing that we should trust them to keep us safe. Sadly, I suspect the largely ignorant electorate will buy into it and President McCain and his joke of a VP pick will continue playing the Sabre-Shaking Symphony.

Not a terrific week for KO. His Obama interview wasn't very interesting while Bill Os was fascinating - btw, that point is not debatable. Poor KO blew that opportunity. Simply fawning over your candidate of choice is not acceptable - you could see that even Obama was a bit horrified.

His 9/11 sound-off, while good red meat for some haters is revealing a certain level of creative fatigue. It is difficult to keep things fresh and interesting night after night and nowhere is this more evident than with this 9/11 discussion.

Think KO needs a little time away. By going so far overboard for Obama, he's hurting himself and his hard-earned rep as having a really creative pretty fun show.
