It tells us something about Sarah Palin's homage to small-town America, delivered to an enthusiastic GOP convention last week, that she chose to fire it up with an unsourced quotation from the all-time champion of fake populism, the belligerent right-wing columnist Westbrook Pegler.

"We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty and sincerity and dignity," the vice-presidential candidate said, quoting an anonymous "writer," which is to say, Pegler, who must have penned that mellifluous line when not writing his more controversial stuff. As the New York Times pointed out in its obituary of him in 1969, Pegler once lamented that a would-be assassin "hit the wrong man" when gunning for Franklin Roosevelt.

The Politico's Ben Smith notes that, beyond supporting FDR's assassination, Pegler was an anti-Semite:

He was also known for what Philip Roth described as his "casual distaste for Jews," which had become so evident by the end that he was bounced from the journal of the John Birch Society in 1964 for alleged anti-semitism. According to his obituary, he'd advanced the theory that American Jews of Eastern European descent were "instinctively sympathetic to Communism, however outwardly respectable they appeared."

Talking about SEXISM -
Am I the only one to think that keeping the first Republican VP nominee under control, away from the media, the crowds, ordering her not to talk to the people, is more SEXIST than anything else anyone can say or do about Palin?

Why does McCain feel the need to control Palin�s exposure? Does he feel she cannot handle the job? He is controlling her every move and everything she says. Even when Bush 1 selected Quayle, who was not too prepared for the job, Quayle was never treated the way Palin is been treated.

It is outrageous that Palin lets McCain control her like that. She should be the world that she can hold herself against the media and the Democrats (maybe she can�t).

I am the only one that sees it this way? Why can�t Palin go out and meet the people, take questions, interact with the public and the media? When will she do it? When she is ready? By who`s standards would she be ready? By the man controlling her moves?

McCain treats Palin like the rich man with the hot wife... she is pretty to look at, be with her, but please, do not let her talk her own mind!

Thank you! I have been saying this all day! This is the most sexist treatment of a woman in public I have seen in a long time. I can't believe that any woman would vote for an all male campaign who at the last minute decided to snatch this not-ready-for prime-time woman out of Alaska just as a bunch of males would have a woman pop out of a cake at a bachelor party. I have a sneaking suspicion. The problem is not that Palin may not be able to handle the media. I think maybe she can but perhaps her temper rivals McCain's and is easily provoked into saying things.

Everyday new info comes out about troopergate and the more I read about it the more I think she can be pretty vindictive when she wants to be. Nothing new and it happens all the time. But it goes against the image of her the McCain campaign is trying to project.

Somehow I'm not surprised. Right wing fundamentalist ideologues believe the Jews killed Jesus. A Jews for Jesus speaker came to Palin's church and basically says the same thing. They believe Israel has a right to exist, except that it won't really know peace until Jesus comes to save Israel from ultimate destruction.
