WASHINGTON — The "Straight Talk Express" has detoured into doublespeak.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain, a self-proclaimed tell-it-like-it-is maverick, keeps saying his running mate, Sarah Palin, killed the federally funded Bridge to Nowhere when, in fact, she pulled her support only after the project became a political embarrassment. He accuses Democrat Barack Obama of calling Palin a pig, which did not happen. He says Obama would raise nearly everyone's taxes, when independent groups say 80 percent of families would get tax cuts instead.

Even in a political culture accustomed to truth-stretching, McCain's skirting of facts has stood out this week. It has infuriated and flustered Obama's campaign, and campaign pros are watching to see how much voters disregard news reports noting factual holes in the claims.

McCain's persistence in pushing dubious claims is all the more notable because many political insiders consider him one of the greatest living victims of underhanded campaigning. Locked in a tight race with George W. Bush for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, McCain was rocked in South Carolina by a whisper campaign claiming he had fathered an illegitimate black child and was mentally unstable.

Shaken by the experience, McCain denounced less-than-truthful campaigning. Vowing to live up to his "straight talk" motto, he apologized for his reluctance to criticize the flying of the Confederate flag at South Carolina's state Capitol in a bid for votes. When the so-called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacked the military record of Democrat and fellow Navy officer John Kerry in 2004, McCain called the ads "dishonest and dishonorable."

Now, top aides to McCain include Steve Schmidt, who has close ties to Karl Rove, Bush's premier political adviser in 2000.

Politicians usually modify or drop claims when a string of newspaper and TV news accounts concludes they are untrue or greatly exaggerated. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, for example, conceded she had not come under sniper fire in Bosnia after a batch of debunking articles subjected her to scorn during her primary contest against Obama.

But McCain and his running mate Palin, the Alaska governor, were defiant this week in the face of similar reports. Day after day she said she had told Congress "no thanks" to the so-called Bridge to Nowhere, a rural Alaska project that was abandoned when critics challenged its costs and usefulness. For nearly a week, major news outlets had documented that Palin supported the bridge when running for governor in 2006, noting that she turned against it only after it became an object of ridicule in Alaska and a symbol of Congress's out-of-control earmarking.

Story continues below

The McCain-Palin campaign made at least three other aggressive claims this week that omitted key details or made dubious assumptions to criticize Obama. It equated lawmakers' requests for money for special projects with corruption, even though Palin has sought nearly $200 million in such "earmarks" this year.

It produced an Internet ad implying that Obama had called Palin a pig when he used a familiar phrase, which McCain also has used, about putting "lipstick on a pig" to try to make a bad situation look better. McCain supporters said Obama was slyly alluding to Palin's description of herself as a pit bull in lipstick, but there was nothing in his remarks to support the claim. Obama accused the GOP campaign of "lies and phony outrage."

The lipstick wars were fully engaged when the McCain campaign produced another ad saying Obama favored "comprehensive sex education" for kindergartners. The charge triggered the sort of headlines becoming increasingly common in major newspapers and wire services monitoring the factual content of political ads and speeches.

"Ad on Sex Education Distorts Obama Policy," was the headline on a New York Times article Thursday. "McCain's 'Education' Spot is Dishonest, Deceptive," The Washington Post's "Fact Checker" article said.

Major news outlets have written such fact-checking articles for years. "But in the last two election cycles, the very notion that the facts matter seems to be under assault," said Michael X. Delli Carpini, an authority on political ads at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication. "Candidates and their consultants seem to have learned that as long as you don't back down from your charges or claims, they will stick in the minds of voters regardless of their accuracy or at a minimum, what the truth is will remain murky, a matter of opinion rather than fact."

With Palin giving McCain's campaign a boost in the polls, Obama supporters are nervously watching to see what impact the latest claims will have. Surveys already show that most people believe Obama would raise their taxes _ a regular McCain claim _ even though independent groups such as the Tax Policy Center concluded that four out of five U.S. households would receive tax cuts under his proposals.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds defended the campaign's statements. "We include factual backup in every one of our TV spots," he said Thursday.

Obama, of course, has made exaggerated or questionable assertions as well. Earlier this year, for instance, he repeated a claim that more black men are in prison than in college, after news accounts refuted it. He also used a McCain remark about having troops in Iraq for "100 years" to exaggerate McCain's proposals for being fully engaged militarily in that country.

In general, however, Obama has been quicker to react to news accounts challenging his accuracy. Faced with skeptical reports this year, for instance, he stopped saying he "worked his way" through college, and instead credited hard work and scholarships.

Dan Schnur, a former McCain aide who now teaches politics at the University of Southern California, said McCain and Obama learned they must stretch the truth "when staying on the high road didn't work out to their benefit."

McCain, he said, "tried it his way. He had a poverty tour and nobody covered it. He had a national service tour, and everybody made fun of it. He proposed these joint town halls" with Obama, "and nothing come of it. Through the spring and early summer, that approach didn't work. You can't blame him for taking a step back and reassessing."

Looks like all of the liberals on the Huffington Post will be made aware of all of the untruths and that will make them support Obama--oh wait--they were going to support Obama anyways!
It's the millions of Americans out there that are accepting the lies as truth.
The Obama campaign should have been prepared for these types of tactics for months since the Republicans have used them for years. But then they could take the Kerry tactic of saying "sticks and stomes may break my bones but words will never hurt me!" Oh I forgot that tactic lost Kerry the Presidency in 2004.

If Kerry had turned to Bush at one of the debates where he was seen as a waffler and said "Mr. President, I was indeed for supporting the troops by voting for the bill until you changed the bill so there was no accountability! Do you really think the American people would have wanted me to vote for a bill that left countless of billions of dollars unaccountable for?" That would have put a stake into the heart of the waffling issue and Kerry would be running for re-election today.

So the bottom line is--how will the Obama campaign address the falsehoods thrown at them? Because if they don't then it will be President McCain and for McCain to win after the present voter sentiment on George W. then someone will really have blown a golden opportunity.

So you think Americans really care about electing someone with brains and vision? No way. Remember 2000 and 2004. Repeat is coming. We are doomed.

Actually justoverit333 --I was not advocating McCain. My concern was that the Obama campaign has not responded to minimize the impact of the attacks when they should have known (like Dukakis, Gore and Kerry) that this is how the Rebubs win elections.

the lies are so many from mccain. i always thought he was an honorable man. i guess at his age, honor doesn't mean anything, anymore. i would have kept an open mind on his campaign ,but, i dont think he's in charge of it anymore. rove-type cronies have come in and taken over his campaign and turned it into a circus. heroes lose more than their honor when they lie. they lose the honor of those who admire them most. i think barack has brought honor to the race. he has maintained it throughout relentless attacks on his character, religion, race, and patriotism. when republicans attack these issues, they are in fact, attacking all of us who support barack. if mccain wins ,using these tactics, this country will make no further societal advances for years to come. it will be a dark day for america, and we may never recover.

One year before John McCain I graduated from the Naval Academy where I learned that a leader’s honesty was paramount to leadership. Honesty to followers fosters trust – the bedrock of inspiring people to do more than they think they can. Ask any Marine how they are able to take that first step toward the enemy, they trust the squad leader to know how to win.
Senator McCain either never learned honesty or he has put it aside for expediencies sake. He approves election advertisements that lie about his views on taxes, Senator Obama’s tax policy, Governor Palin’s position on earmarks, and taxes etc., etc. The advertisement’s statements about these issues are not true, i.e. lies. In many of his campaign speeches he flip flops his position on policies he championed over many years without good reason expressed. It seems that the ‘Straight Talk Express’ has become a ‘Fairy Tale Trolley.’
Making this situation worst is Senator McCain’s repeated use of these lies. His is using the Barnum and Bailey philosophy of tell a lie often enough and loud enough and some people will believe it. The is reminiscent of President Bush and Carl Rove (and perhaps of several propagandists in the late 1930s and early 1940s).
His behavior degrades Senator McCain’s military training and service. He is not a leader I want to follow.

Has anyone noticed how much Obama and McCain have aged? I was looking through a history book the other day and there were before and after pics of presidents time in office....you cannot believe how much they age and so quickly. I think about McCain especially, geez this has to be grueling, I'm half his age and don't know if I could keep up with the pace and the stress. But then I'm not running for Prez. (Thank God!)

I think it helps Obama not look so young and thus more experienced and electable. McCain not so much. If he wins and survives a first term he will be decrepit by the end of it.

McLobbyistLover doesn't realize that the party put him up as the nominee in a throwaway election. They know how bad they have destroyed the republican brand. So any damage they can do to the Dems with the support of MSM is gravy.

If they, by chance, actually win, it's a signal to finish killing governance and to finish looting the treasury.

Totally agree! I don't go to YouTube for any other reason than to watch his speeches - and the Yes We Can video. When I start to feel disheartened, that video or hearing him talk restores my hope.

that is why it is important that we not only contribute in time and money to the campaign, but we must use the power of the internet. when you see a story that debunks mcbush's lies - send it to everyone in you know. if you see something in the msm, e-mail or call them and let them know. the time for action is now!!

McCain said last night twice, and before, that if Obama had agreed to the Town Halls the tenor of the campaign might be different. So, in essence, McCain's pledge to run a honorable and ethical campaign was shelved in a tantrum because his rival didn't like his town hall plan. Very vindictive if true but, I call BS, his polling said he was losing bad in key battle ground states and he did this as a last ditch effort....and he would be doing it regardless of the town halls

McCain keeps coming over and over that point...how it might have been different if Obama had agreed to the "town hall" meetings...it makes me think of an abusive spouce who says, "If you'd just done what I said, I wouldn't have HAD to hurt you!" Kinda warped logic if you ask me!

McCain is a sellout. I wouldn't be surprised if he made a pact with the devil himself just to win at all costs. He is a shadow of his former self, he should know better, and he is a sorry excuse for a human being. Voting for him after a bus full of lies, says a lot about his supporters. They want to win, but governing isn't such a big deal. Worry about that later after you vote for 'the guy you can relate to.' What a buch of narcisists. Give me a break!

Middle class families will see their taxes cut " and no family making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase. The typical middle class family will receive well over $1,000 in tax relief under the Obama plan, and will pay tax rates that are 20% lower than they faced under President Reagan. According to the Tax Policy Center, the Obama plan provides three times as much tax relief for middle class families as the McCain plan.

"Even in a political culture accustomed to truth-stretching, McCain's skirting of facts has stood out this week." first it was dirty tricks, then the southern strategy to divide and conquer and manipulate by fear, then innuendo and switftboating, but now the good ol' gop has figured out lying is easier, more expedient and much more effective. believe me, when the good ol' lying gop tells you it is night, you better darn well believe it is day. but their devious strategy is two fold: distract the voters from the issues, they at least say they care about, and suppress the vote. knowing the democrats have out-registered them, it follows they must discourage these new, back again or young voters from voting. if these voters tell themselves, "this is nothing new, this isn't change, this is just politics as usual" they will just not vote again. we now know karl rove is the wizard behind the curtain, john mccain is a figurehead and ms. palin is the pea in the shell game; and no one plays the shell game better than the good ol' lying gop. unfortunately, the smart and sharp sen. obama is falling for the con.

John McCain is bankrupt of ideas and Sarah Palin is his hatchet woman. The only thing they can do is borrow from the Karl Rove playbook and lie, lie big, lie often. When he realized he was trapped between George Bush and the Devil, he parked the Straight Talk Express and made a deal with the Devil. This is not about my country first; it’s about John McCain’s enormous ego.
This, however, is not the real problem. The real problem is that so many voters are so undereducated and superstitious that they will support these big lies for ulterior reasons. We can’t be willing to sacrifice integrity for expediency, but we have done just that for the past eight years.
