NEW YORK — Barack Obama and former President Clinton talked for two hours on Thursday, their first meeting in a White House race that had once bitterly divided them. Clinton predicted that Obama will win the presidency "pretty handily."

Their conversation started with small talk about the former president's commute to his Harlem office and ended after a lunch of sandwiches, flatbread pizza and salad from Cosi.

"They discussed the campaign briefly, but mostly talked about how the world has changed since September 11, 2001," their spokesmen said in a joint statement. The meeting came on the seventh anniversary of the attacks and shortly before Obama was to visit Ground Zero with Republican presidential rival John McCain.

Reporters were allowed in at the beginning of the meeting in Clinton's 14th floor office, but the former president kept his answers short when he was asked about his involvement with Obama's campaign this fall. He noted an already announced trip Sept. 29 to Florida.

Obama said, "We're putting him to work."

Asked if he would be campaigning beyond that, Clinton said, "I've agreed to do a substantial number of things, whatever I'm asked to do."

Before reporters were ushered out, Clinton was asked where he sees the race between Obama and McCain.

"I predict that Senator Obama will win and win pretty handily," he said.

Obama interjected: "You can take it from the president of the United States. He knows a little something about politics."

Obama and Bill Clinton appeared less friendly toward each other at times during Obama's Democratic primary battle with Clinton's wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. After Obama clinched the party's nomination, both Clintons gave strong speeches in Obama's favor during the party convention in Denver.

Obama's visit to Clinton's Harlem office, which overlooks Central Park, sparked excitement in the neighborhood, with people crowding around police barricades that shut off the block. The two men briefly appeared in front of the building, where a large group had been waiting for hours in hopes of a glimpse.

People screamed loudly and snapped cell phone pictures when the two emerged. Obama ducked back in the building with Clinton after a few waves but without shaking hands.

Their spokesmen said the two men were complimentary of each other's work, with Obama praising the Clinton Foundation, and Clinton applauding the candidate's campaign.

"They also spoke about what the next president can do to help make the economy work for all Americans, as it did under President Clinton, and ensure safety and prosperity far beyond the coming the election," their joint statement said.

Let's just hope they have Bubba's suspenders in hand.

I think there's going to be a BIG embarrassment coming from this little 'tryst' in the very near future.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

"Maddow asked, "Do we know why [Follieri] hired Rick Davis's lobbying firm and whether or not that connection had anything to do with John McCain?"

Berman replied that Follieri, who had already tight connections with some of Bill Clinton's aides and financial supporters, "wanted to do the same thing with McCain. He was playing both sides. ... We think he was [in Montenegro] because McCain was there, and what happened after that yacht party with McCain is, he ended up sending Rick Davis business information.""

A tactical what? Nuclear warhead? I'd have paid real money to see the whole republican leadership wiped out with one small nuke dropped on their convention. Only thing is St. Paul is too nice a city to nuke.

Too little, to late...Is my picture of B.O. and Bill...B.O. screwed up when he picked Biden, he know's it a the rest of America know's it. It was stupid is hell, to pick Biden. Now Democrat's you do what you do best, lose...And don't try that crap and blame it on Hillary, Obama made a dumb green calculation.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:41 PM on 09/11/2008

I have to be honest as much as I like Biden perhaps the more pragmatic move was for O to have picked Hill. Having said that I think he can win without her on the ticket.
It appears to me, and this is only my opinion, that Hill could be putting forth more effort on behalf of O.
It would seem she is looking ahead to 2012.
Oh well, thats politics.

I would have been fine with Hillary as VP, but I think Obama made the right choice. If he had picked Hillary, the right wing would have had a field day with all their opposition research, and McCain would have picked Huckabee, most likely, as VP. And then, talk about the sexism we would have seen. It would have gotten ugly fast. Not that it isn't ugly now.

I love Biden as the VP pick. And I don't think Clinton wanted it, or she would have submitted her financials.

I also believe Hillary is doing exactly what the Obama campaign is asking her to do. Why pull out all the stops now? Why spend all the power now? They're very strategic. I think they know what they're doing.

Obviously, both Biden and Hillary are extremely well-qualified to be VP (unlike certain others we could mention). I think Biden was a good choice just because the media is so obsessed with the Clintons. It's hard enough to get the media to focus on the issues -- can you image if Hillary were on the ticket?

"I also believe Hillary is doing exactly what the Obama campaign is asking her to do."

Apparently Obama himself thinks so too:

I wasn't enthusiastic about seeing HRC on the ticket as VP, for a variety of reasons. Most having to do with the baggage of Bill, etc. And I liked Biden. But I agree with you, the more pragmatic (and perhaps dramatic) move would have been to select Hillary. And I would have liked to have seen HRC in a debate with Palin.

No matter what O did MacCane would have had attack ads ready. They would have said he was spineless and caved to the Clintons. The rethugs have a file on Hil 6 inches thick. We have no reason to second guess the VP choice. Don't be fooled by that kind of strategy. The only one who should be second guessing his VP choice is the old man who picked Pentecostal Barbie without v.etting her.

Nope, nope nope! Not to say that Hillary wouldn't have been a good VP. But let's not forget the reasons why so many people threatened to pull their support if he chose her:

1) Hillary's kitchen-sink strategy alienated her from fully half the democratic electorate.

2) Her refusal to pull out after Indiana when it was clear she couldn't win by delegate count reflected incredibly poorly on her judgment, especially since it meant inflating a debt she could not possibly manage to pay off.

3) Her massive campaign debt, compared to Obama's fiscal wizardry left no doubt as to who was better with money and who could do more to eliminate our debt.

4) Declaring that she would accept the VP spot without being asked, as is the tradition, only angered and alienated her detractors even more.

5) Her refusal to release her delegates and concede the race when every other candidate had done so made people worry that she was planning some kind of convention coup.

All of these actions led people to believe that she would never be able to truly accept being 2IC to Obama, and that she would do more to sabotage his presidency than to help it. An Obama/Clinton ticket probably would have destroyed McCain had she proven to her detractors that she would be a partner in office and not an adversary. But her own actions made it impossible for him to choose her without destroying his own base.

What do you think they were doing playing tiddly winks? They were both fighting for what they believe to their core is best for everyone. Don't be so naive about politics.

If Obama were to lose you'd have a different view. As a Hillary supporter I also support Obama but the Democrats lost a hell of a lot of energy because she didn't make the ticket. Let's hope it won't hurt us in November.

That's politics? That's the problem. I do hope that Hillary is not planning on running in 2012. Four years is a long time to put up with McCain and Palin. We would be taking a big chance.

It's Barry as there is no "e" in Barack. And the word is "lose" not "loose". Lose is the opposite of win. Loose is the opposite of tight. Sorry, but I'm a linguist. Couldn't let that one pass.

How in Gods name can Obama win this election when he answers Judy Woodruff's question about what difference there would have been between what McCain said he would have done if he was President on 9-11 and what Barack would have done; when Barack answers the question by saying that his response would not really that different than McCains. McCain WANTED TO INVADE IRAQ TWO DAYS AFTER 9-11!! Why doesn't Barack POINT THAT OUT??? I GIVE UP.

So many people don't know how to act if a Clinton is an official good guy. Why so accepting all of a sudden? My guy is better then your guy must have been wrapped up and put back on the shelf for some reason. About time all dem supporters grew up a little. Now get busy and get people to the voting machines. This has always been the toughest challenge for a dem nominee any way. All of the talk means nothing if we don't get all of the never show ups to vote. It is the duty of a citizen to vote, pass it on.
