NEW YORK — Barack Obama and former President Clinton talked for two hours on Thursday, their first meeting in a White House race that had once bitterly divided them. Clinton predicted that Obama will win the presidency "pretty handily."

Their conversation started with small talk about the former president's commute to his Harlem office and ended after a lunch of sandwiches, flatbread pizza and salad from Cosi.

"They discussed the campaign briefly, but mostly talked about how the world has changed since September 11, 2001," their spokesmen said in a joint statement. The meeting came on the seventh anniversary of the attacks and shortly before Obama was to visit Ground Zero with Republican presidential rival John McCain.

Reporters were allowed in at the beginning of the meeting in Clinton's 14th floor office, but the former president kept his answers short when he was asked about his involvement with Obama's campaign this fall. He noted an already announced trip Sept. 29 to Florida.

Obama said, "We're putting him to work."

Asked if he would be campaigning beyond that, Clinton said, "I've agreed to do a substantial number of things, whatever I'm asked to do."

Before reporters were ushered out, Clinton was asked where he sees the race between Obama and McCain.

"I predict that Senator Obama will win and win pretty handily," he said.

Obama interjected: "You can take it from the president of the United States. He knows a little something about politics."

Obama and Bill Clinton appeared less friendly toward each other at times during Obama's Democratic primary battle with Clinton's wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. After Obama clinched the party's nomination, both Clintons gave strong speeches in Obama's favor during the party convention in Denver.

Obama's visit to Clinton's Harlem office, which overlooks Central Park, sparked excitement in the neighborhood, with people crowding around police barricades that shut off the block. The two men briefly appeared in front of the building, where a large group had been waiting for hours in hopes of a glimpse.

People screamed loudly and snapped cell phone pictures when the two emerged. Obama ducked back in the building with Clinton after a few waves but without shaking hands.

Their spokesmen said the two men were complimentary of each other's work, with Obama praising the Clinton Foundation, and Clinton applauding the candidate's campaign.

"They also spoke about what the next president can do to help make the economy work for all Americans, as it did under President Clinton, and ensure safety and prosperity far beyond the coming the election," their joint statement said.

You know what, Obama is young and brilliant - you people don't realize that the Clintons need Obama more then he needs them - Obama will be around much longer because of his age - he's got time to do whatever he wants - the Clintons have to worry about their legacy and they know the game - it's call power and privilege - Obama made the smartest pick for vp and he did it not based on some gender based nonsense - you kids need to grow up - Obama is moving on and he will keep moving on with or without you nose drippers -

And if he doesn't win, and that is looking more and more likely, he will schlep back to the senate like Kerry did. Another Democratic failure and has been.

You have got to know that running against repubs is tough! They lie, cheat and steal. But check out Obama. He's calm, cool, collected. And THAT my friend, is how's he's going to beat your guy! McCain has no class, character or integrity. We've had eight years of that! 8 IS ENOUGH! I love you Obama!!!

No. Remember? It is McCain who made the big mistake in his choice for VP. And the tide is turning. SP is making major mistakes, as is McCain. I don't think the American people will be stupid for the third time.

Maybe Bill Clinton can teach Barack Obama that forceful counter-punching is not the same as attacking. A good left jab followed by a stinging right hook is a winning combination, whereas counter-punchers almost always lose.

Two best-selling anti-Obama books on the NYTimes bestseller list and ZERO anti-McCain books. Must the Democrats persist with their unilateral niceness -- followed by losing?

The reason Kerry's concession speech was so eloquent was that he started working on it in early May.

Please Senator Obama, attack now, so we all don't have to regret, later.

I am not that thrilled about Bill campaigning for Obama. He did some real damage to his wife's campaign. But maybe he will do better with Obama because he is not so personally involved. He was pretty bitter against Obama after his wife's loss, but one thing I will say about Bill, he doesn't hold a grudge.

I voted for him twice, and defended him when the big scandal was in full force and when it was pretty hard to defend him. I like Bill and always have. I saw him in person once. He filled the whole room with his presence. He is a supremely self confident man, but he lost his center when he campaigned for Hillary. I have never believed that Bill and Hillary were racists, but they did use the race card. They are pretty ruthless campaigners, and even you can't deny that.

Damage? He won 60% of the vote where he campaigned.

Yes! If the Republicans can lie about Obama's tax program, then why not level the field of misrepresentation and declare with certitude that McCain WILL reinstate the draft.

After all, he might -- and isn't that good enough to go on? Democrats need to attack with credible themes of their own.

McCain will require mandatory combat duty. It's a noble idea -- nothing to be ashamed of -- so why not see what the American people think?

It sounded to me that 0 was more likely to reenstate the draft if elected. Better go back and watch the repeat airing.

Best news ever!!! Now THAT'S putting your country first. No matter what anybody says about him, Bill Clinton is still a patriot. You can't really love America and not be terrified by this ridiculous choice McCain has made for a VP. Bill's not going to stand idly by and do nothing while the rethugs offer us cheescake instead of a legitimate VP candidate.

Bill, I still love you. This is exactly why I voted for you...twice. Unlike McCain who only talks about patriotism, what you're doing now demonstrates how much you love your country. Well done!!!

I'm inclined to agree with Mr. Clinton. The Republican party manipulates the media with their many distractions; mostly nonsense. However, people are hurting for change and that includes Republicans.

No disrespect to our elderly, but a man with a history of cancer at 72 years of age is a risk. Sarah Palin as his running mate is a gamble for Mr. McCain (or gimmick) but one that could prove very costly to the American people. Unemployment is steadily rising as more companies lay off employees; money is tighter; health care costs continue to soar; increasingly more middle-class adults are unable to afford health insurance or are being denied ... WE NEED A HEALTH CARE POLICY; Republicans throw around the "war" word like it's cotton candy (Middle East, and now idle threats to Russia)... WE NEED A POLICY TO FORGE PEACE. Israel is more vulnerable now than ever before because of the Bush Administration's wrecklessness in Iraq. Oil prices are higher than ever before and not simply because of the fragility of the middle east ... IT'S LOBBYIST MANAGED GREED combined with NO leadership to develop a progressive energy policy. WE NEED AN ENERGY POLICY.

Where does McCain/Palin fit into any of the above? They've yet to explain with any depth to the American people their plan other than WE MIGHT HAVE TO GO TO WAR WITH RUSSSIA. If the media can get Sarah Palin off script and voters begin to hear her views, Mr. Obama will win "Pretty Handily."
