NEW YORK — Barack Obama and former President Clinton talked for two hours on Thursday, their first meeting in a White House race that had once bitterly divided them. Clinton predicted that Obama will win the presidency "pretty handily."

Their conversation started with small talk about the former president's commute to his Harlem office and ended after a lunch of sandwiches, flatbread pizza and salad from Cosi.

"They discussed the campaign briefly, but mostly talked about how the world has changed since September 11, 2001," their spokesmen said in a joint statement. The meeting came on the seventh anniversary of the attacks and shortly before Obama was to visit Ground Zero with Republican presidential rival John McCain.

Reporters were allowed in at the beginning of the meeting in Clinton's 14th floor office, but the former president kept his answers short when he was asked about his involvement with Obama's campaign this fall. He noted an already announced trip Sept. 29 to Florida.

Obama said, "We're putting him to work."

Asked if he would be campaigning beyond that, Clinton said, "I've agreed to do a substantial number of things, whatever I'm asked to do."

Before reporters were ushered out, Clinton was asked where he sees the race between Obama and McCain.

"I predict that Senator Obama will win and win pretty handily," he said.

Obama interjected: "You can take it from the president of the United States. He knows a little something about politics."

Obama and Bill Clinton appeared less friendly toward each other at times during Obama's Democratic primary battle with Clinton's wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. After Obama clinched the party's nomination, both Clintons gave strong speeches in Obama's favor during the party convention in Denver.

Obama's visit to Clinton's Harlem office, which overlooks Central Park, sparked excitement in the neighborhood, with people crowding around police barricades that shut off the block. The two men briefly appeared in front of the building, where a large group had been waiting for hours in hopes of a glimpse.

People screamed loudly and snapped cell phone pictures when the two emerged. Obama ducked back in the building with Clinton after a few waves but without shaking hands.

Their spokesmen said the two men were complimentary of each other's work, with Obama praising the Clinton Foundation, and Clinton applauding the candidate's campaign.

"They also spoke about what the next president can do to help make the economy work for all Americans, as it did under President Clinton, and ensure safety and prosperity far beyond the coming the election," their joint statement said.

Given the recent addition to Palin to the republican ticket it makes no sense for Hillary to want Obama to lose. If McCain wins, whether he goes for one or two terms, Palin has suddenly been elevated with recognition and experience. It would be a lot harder for Hillary to run against with her being the opponent. In my humble opinion she should do everything she can, including exposing Palin, to help Obama win. It would be in her long term best interest.

No one can win this race for 0-man; he has to do it for himself. Granted Bill and Hill will help tremendously, but the final burden is his. However, he has a better chance with the Clinton's.

I agree. and Hillary will be an important part of the Health Care agenda, and that in my opinion will be one of her great achievements in an Obama Administration.

Hillary wants to be the first woman president. If Palin usurps that role, while not sharing any of her values, that can only be bad for the clinton legacy.

Nice to see a positive photo on this ugly campaign media blitz. A pretty high example set here, Republicans are going to have to dig deep to top this. Bravo, a tilt in the right direction.

We stood by Bill when the Republicans were attacking from all sides in the '90s, he knows he owes us.There's and old saying " I can say what I want about my family, but don't ever let me hear you say it"

Rep Clyborg says Bill owes his surviving impeachment to the AA's; I don't believe that. Bill had an 86% approval rating; so there many more Americans that supported him than their is a black population.... So who did he owe? I would suggest his lawyers!

Isn't GW Bush's ratings in the negative numbers?? You know, the president WHO SHOULD be impeached and removed? The president and VP who weren't even wanted at their own party's Convention? I miss Bill Clinton, he was the best president EVER. Obama will be good too, LEOS are meant to lead! ( and both Obama and Bill Clinton are Leos!) Obama Biden 08

bring out the 527's... destroy the NEO-CONS that destroyed my party

Most of the Dem. 527's said it was way to late in the campaign season for them to organize, collect money and the apparatus for making ads. It looks like Mr.0 outsmart himself on this one. He'll have to compete with JM's $85 million with whatever he has in the bank and collects this next six weeks or so. Now what is four times 85Million? That was his M.O. in the primaries.

No, the moderator does NOT suck. You see, over here at a PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL blog, you can't act a fool and say just anything that pops in your little tiny republican head. They have a thing called "see profile". Wonderful in it's effectiveness to see A. how long you've been here B. what kind of tripe you spew against our leader in waiting and C. your way out of here. Buh Bye! :) :O :| :(

Not surprising, to me... Obama and the Clintons are grown-ups, after all, with flaws, but grown-ups, nonetheless. They're professional. They all knew going in that there would be a certain conflict during the primaries that simply couldn't go on afterward, no matter who won the nomination. I'm happy to have Bill on the trail for us. And there's probably no more experience Democrat when it comes to creating prosperity for Americans.

The DIsco Ball is Off and Rove's Manchurian Candidates Are not Going to Win

The disco ball is off for Palin and McCain...because it never really gleamed from within...only smoke and mirror hijinks. Yes, we do well to be worried of Palin Supreme Court and all the horrific potential for that ticket in the WH.
But, the (and here is where you can breathe) reality is in the numbers of the Electoral College votes...Obama is still far ahead...and even in a worse-case scenario would probably still win if, in the unlikely event of a 269-269 tie, states each get one vote...and a majority of the states will vote DEM.

Obama's campaign managers beat the unbeatable Hillary...they know what they are doing...and are not wasting precious energy going mano-a-mano with McCain/Palin.

This 9/11 meeting with Clinton is but a smidgen of their overarching wait-and-see strategy. They are in the lead...the media wants us panting for good news...but we need to take a look at the whole trail and see that Obama is simply winning.

Great. Do NOT relax people. The fight ain't over until Wolf killer Wanda and McCreammypants are dust. When you see a smart black man place his hand on the Bible on a beautiful winter's day next year, then you can believe we won. NOT UNTIL! Get out the vote, folks. Serious time is ramping up.

People have pretty strong reactions to the Clintons - they're either a gift descended from Heaven or they're belched out of the bowels of hades. It tends to be pretty definite.

But the one thing I think both camps can agree on is that Bill Clinton is one of the best stump speakers - maybe ever. People will pay a ridiculous sum for a glass of wine and two shrimp puffs to sit in a ballroom and listen to him speak.....or he can walk into a small town and suddenly the sky is bluer, the air is warmer and the birds sing in harmony. Even cakes rise higher in Mayberry when Bill comes to town. I'm not being sarchastic or derogatory. He has the gift, and it is a gift, of entering any world he chooses and people who may not even like him, will find themselves listening and considering his words.

So if he wants to go out there and eat corndogs and talk price of wheat or put on his tux and wine and dine some folks, then step aside and let him. I think it would make him happy, because it's what he loves best - talking to the people. He talks to them well.

I disagree that it is definite. I feel BOTH ways about them which leaves me perpetually conflicted. I really do not care for Hill at all., but she has her policies down good and I would ahve voted for her. Bill on the other hand is loveable/likeable, but is morally corrupt as to leave a bad taste in ones mouth. I would like to see more of the likeable Bill, he really came off bad through Hill's campaign. We will take all the help we can get!

Go O!

I hope you're right. I do know that if he genuinely is committed, he can be a HUGE help. And it's true that the guy has enormous charisma.

I saw him after he spoke to --I think it was the VFW--in 1992. It was unusual, because Bush was scheduled to speak immediately afterwards. The whole experience was interesting, but I remember when he came out of the building, the crowd went NUTS. He bounced out, slammed back a Coke, and waded into the crowd. They're all screaming like he was the Beatles---""BILL! BILL! AIEEEEE!"-- and he's trying to hug them all simultaneously and the poor Secret Service is trying to keep them apart and failing.

Anyway, I have no clue what that is, but he still has that in spades. And he's a terrific fundraiser.

They used to call it having "It". They discovered it with the beginning of film. It didn't matter how talented someone was, or how pretty, or how unusual. They could be bland, ugly as a stump or talented and eye-popping pretty - no difference. The camera just loved them not for how they looked but how they radiated....something.....and they came off the screen and the public just adored them.

Bill has "It". Love him or loathe him.

"He has the gift, and it is a gift"

That sentence sums it up pretty d*mned well. I saw him twice during the primaries, and he makes you feel like he is talking to you about you. Mesmerizing. It took Bill awhile in the primaries to learn what the 0 machine was capable of precipitating about him, but once he realized they were going to play down and dirty, he adjusted. He went to rural areas, and he stopped talking to the MSM, who tried to bait him into losing his temper. He also stopped paying attention to "plants" in the audience. Too bad it took so long because Hillary started winning a majority of primaries. ( Well, that's old news, and now 0-man is running!) Just remember where Bill campaigned in those rural areas where the blue collared white population is high, he won 60+ % of the vote for her. Think about how valuable that would be to Mr.0, who has no idea how to talk to those people.

There are rifts and there are rifts.
No way could the dems be any where near as sleazy as the rethugs are being right now. After the primaries, it puts everything in perspective.
Any of the dems would be better than any of the rethugs.
