As if to quash the emerging news narrative that John McCain is afraid of the press after going a full month without holding a press conference, the Republican nominee's campaign made the candidate available last night to a local television station in Maine.

If they thought McCain would come under less intensive fire than he would from the national press, however, the campaign was mistaken. Rob Caldwell, a dogged reporter for WCSH, pressed McCain repeatedly on Gov. Sarah Palin's qualifications for the vice presidency. And while answering, McCain made a number of factual misstatements.

First, the reporter asked McCain to explain Sarah Palin's foreign policy credentials:

Q: Let 's move on to what you say is the number one issue facing the United States in our time. And that is the challenge of addressing Islamist extremism. What credentials does Gov. Palin have -- in national security, diplomacy, foreign policy -- that qualify her to be your partner in that, on that issue: the fight against Islamic extremism?

McCain: Well, obviously the economy is also a major challenge facing America.

Q: No, I'm using your words, Senator McCain, you have said, this summer...

McCain: No, I said...

Q: That the number one challenge of our time is Islamic extremism...

McCain: No, I said the greatest challenge of our time is national security threats. I've also said that jobs and the economy are the number one issue facing America.

Leaving aside McCain's ability to define America's "greatest challenge" as somehow different from its "number one issue," it's just not true that he has never described "Islamic extremism" as the greatest challenge of our time.

From a March 28 speech posted on McCain's website: "It will strengthen us to confront the transcendent challenge of our time: the threat of radical Islamic terrorism. This challenge is transcendent not because it is the only one we face. There are many dangers in today's world, and our foreign policy must be agile and effective at dealing with all of them. But the threat posed by the terrorists is unique."

And in June: "Well, I would think that the absolute gravest threat is the struggle that we're in against Islamic extremism, which can affect, if they prevail, our very existence."

Continuing, McCain brought up an Alaska natural gas pipeline backed by Palin:

McCain: So, ah, but the point is Governor Palin was right on the issues. She understands energy, which is one of the fundamental issues of our national security. She was responsible for a $40 billion pipeline that's gonna bring natural gas to the lower 48.

But as the New York Times reported yesterday, "the pipeline exists only on paper." And though Palin has thus far proved adept at "attracting developers to a project that has eluded Alaska governors for three decades ... Ms. Palin has overstated both the progress that has been made and the certainty of success."

In the interview, McCain continued by saying Palin was "right on Russia" and "right on Iraq" while Senator Obama was "wrong." McCain also falsely suggested that Obama had credited Palin with being "right on Iran," which has never happened. "He [Obama] said that she was right on Iran when he's been wrong on Iran."

Regardless of what one thinks of Barack Obama's positions on Russia, Iraq and Iran, it's hard to see how Palin had much of a track record at all -- on any of these matters.

As Andrew Sullivan has noted, she answered a question on Iraq in 2006 by saying: "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe. Every life lost is such a tragedy. I am very, very proud of the troops we have in Alaska, those fighting overseas for our freedoms, and the families here who are making so many sacrifices."

When asked again by the interviewer for a specific example of Palin's foreign policy experience, McCain flubbed Palin's talking point on energy.

McCain: She knows more about energy than probably anybody else in the Unites States. She is governor of a state [pause] that 20 percent of America's energy supply comes from there.

Leave aside the wildly overstated assertion that Palin is America's top expert on energy. McCain also claimed that the state produces "20 percent of America's energy supply," which is just wrong.

In 2005, Alaska produced 3.5 percent of America's energy supply. Presumably McCain meant to say that Alaska is responsible for 20 percent of America's domestic oil production (which is true).

Individually, these were perhaps all minor flubs. But taken in total, they suggested McCain may be a bit rocky now that his campaign has mostly closed him off to reporters.

McCain blinks more than any person I've ever seen. It's insane if you watch his eyes.

Isn't there an admonition in the Bible: "what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and sell his soul in the process"? Boy, if this isn't exactly what John McCain has done, I can't imagine anyone coming much closer.

When he was up against Mitt-wit and Huckabee, I was hoping he'd get the niomination because I thought he was truly a man of integrity and honor. As one of those undecided independents, I was looking forward to voting for him once he secured the nomination, because, quite frankly, i didn't know how the democratic side would play out.

Well, not any more, especially with his outragious ads that are, even by Karl Rove's standards, way beyond the truth. And his pick of Sister Palin is an insult not only to women but to all Americans. This is a classic case of "one lies, and the other swears to it." It's a shame to see a soul so completely sold to the devil.

I find it difficult to believe that the right actually believes their own positions. Lock-step just like elephants always march. Grab the tail of the pachi in front of you and march.

Learning everything you know out of one book of fairy tales lets ya do that, I guess.

this interviewer was great...they should get him on CNN to replace Wolf Blitzer or Anderson Cooper. McCain is completely clueless, but that won't stop the great voters of this country from acting like total dumb*sses when Election Day rolls around...

This gets more bizarre every day. Not only did Palin lie to forty million American people on the night she introduced herself to us, they both have lied on the stump, and continue to lie every day . The American people need to get "Mad As Hell And Not Take It Anymore". This whole FICTIONAL DRAMA, is an insult to every citizen and it needs to stop now. This is sick. I thought Palin to be their "CHATTY CATHY DOLL" to program and spout what ever they wanted. Now, it's evident to me that McCain is now their "CHATTY JOHNNY DOLL". The problem I have with all of this , is who is doing the programing ? So much for John McCain putting "COUNTRY FIRST"

For McCain to claim Sarah Palin knows "more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America" is not only a bold-faced lie, it's laughable and incredibly insulting to the experts with real knowledge.

If I hear "Sarah knows Russia" because Alaska is 55 miles across the Bering Strait one more time, I'll claw my own eyes out. I don't know all that much about the six states and Canada which border my own state, but I know more about the "lower 48" than does Palin.

And she has no curiosity to know more.

I love this "small-town" reporter who tripped McCain up so often.

Harry Truman said Rich Nixon would "lie when he could tell the truth just to stay in practice." Sound familiar?

Dishonest...liars...no integrity...unqualified...out of touch...maybe. Alzheimers? Perhaps the old man isn't really trying to lie intentionally. Perhaps he simply believes all the lies because he's simply too incompetent and out of touch with reality. The reporters probably feel sorry for the man because they are picking up on hints that he (McCain) may be suffering from Alzheimers or senility. Reagan (while in office) winged it for a while, as recent history serves me correctly; I'm sure McCain can, too.

Of course, then there's the matter that he may possibly be insane. I mean, insanity is defined as repeating the same things over and over and expecting a different result each time. But I digress...the media is having a lust-fest with the Barracuda, and McCain is surely the stood surrogate for her. Doesn't he realize that he's being prostituted by his own party? Really, if he had any sense of logic, by now he would've figured out that his VP pick wasn't selected as his understudy -- she was selected for her future role of taking command upon his dismissal.

The media groupies, who continue to fall to the feet of McCain and baracuda to worship them will eventually get their comeuppence when all the static clears the airwaves and the truth and disparities of these two (McCain/Baracuda).

John "Country First" McCain is satisfied that Sarah Palin is well-versed in such foreign policy matters as the location of the Czechoslovakia-Iran border and the difference between Sunni and Shiite.

McCain's Judgment "Make No Mistake!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRpIfTDHG2U

If you truly care about our veterans and this great country of ours...

...Don't vote for John McCain.

McCain voted against our troops MANY times in the senate.

John McCain voted AGAINST 20 million dollars for veteran care facilities.

John McCain voted AGAINST $322 million for safety equipment for our troops in Iraq.

John McCain voted AGAINST $1 billion dollars in new equipment for the National Guard.

John McCain voted AGAINST $430 million for veterans outpatient care.

Barack voted FOR all of these troop support initiatives.

They deserve better than McCain.

We deserve better than McCain.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AND VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT.
