In her first major interview as the Republican vice presidential nominee, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was stumped when asked about the so-called "Bush Doctrine," unable to answer whether she agreed with the six-year-old U.S. policy of military preemption.

Asked by ABC News' Charlie Gibson whether she supported the Bush Doctrine, Palin stared blankly for a moment before turning the question back on Gibson. "In what respect?"

The ABC anchor responded, "Well, what do you interpret it to be?" clearly testing her knowledge of the policy that has been in place since September 2002, before the Iraq war.

Palin couldn't say, offering an answer that didn't even mention preemption. "I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism, terrorists who are hell-bent in destroying our nation. There have been blunders along the way, though. There have been mistakes made, and with new leadership, and that's the beauty of American elections, of course, and democracy, is with new leadership comes opportunity to do things better."

Gibson, who clearly felt he had not received a sufficient answer to the question he had asked, proceeded to define the Bush Doctrine for the governor. According to Bush's National Security Strategy from September 2002: "While the United States will constantly strive to enlist the support of the international community, we will not hesitate to act alone, if necessary, to exercise our right of self defense by acting preemptively against such terrorists, to prevent them from doing harm against our people and our country."

Thus, Gibson pressed Palin. "The Bush Doctrine is we have the right to self-defense, pre-emptive strike against any country we think is going to attack us," he noted. "Do you agree with it?"

Finally, Palin came close to offering an opinion on preemption. "Charlie, if there is enough intelligent and legitimate evidence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country," she said.

Later in the interview, Palin was asked why exactly being the governor of Alaska made her an expert on Russia -- a claim that the McCain campaign has used to justify her national security bonafides. Her response was to cite geographic proximity, claiming that from some points in her home state, one could actually see the increasingly confrontational nation.

PALIN: We have to keep our eyes on Russia. Under the leadership there.

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They're our next door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.

There were times during her appearance on ABC that Palin seemingly did not have a full grasp of McCain's own foreign policy positions. For example, when pressed by Gibson whether, in efforts to combat terrorism, the United States should target al Qaeda figures in Pakistan without that country's permission, Palin tried to circumvent the question. The ABC host attempted to pin her down with a yes or no answer, to which Palin seemed to suggest that it would be an American imperative to make such an un-sanctioned attack.

"In order to stop Islamic extremists, those terrorists who would seek to destroy America, and our allies, we must do whatever it takes, and we must not blink, Charlie. In making the tough decisions of where we go, and even who we target. she said.

The response, though hardly definitive, seemed to put her at odds with McCain, who has harshly criticized Obama for saying he would target terrorist leaders that are replenishing their ranks in northwest Pakistan.

I thought it was a dreadful performance by a diligent student. She seems over-rehearsed and under-prepared at the same time. Nervous, her eyes either popping or in the wrong place, she provided pat answers to most questions and stumbled badly on her understanding (or lack thereof) on the Bush Doctrine which has been the driving force behind the candidacy of John McCain. The defense she offered of her extreme quasi-political religious beliefs made no sense and her acknowledgment of meeting not one foreign head-of-state and her defense of this was frankly pathetic. The fact that totally inexperienced candidate has ignited the base of the GOP speaks volumes.

A woman calling herself Debbie on a CNN blog wrote how excited she was about Palin being named as McCain's VP. Her comment was she considered this choice to be divine intervention. I now feel very sorry for down to earth Americans trying to turn their country around as I just don't know of any way logic or common sense can deal with this kind of insanity.

It just might be that there are too many evangelicals in the U.S. who simply don't care about anything other than converting society to adopt and live by their narrow minded view of how everyone should think and act. Hopefully I am wrong but I am increasingly becoming more convinced that this segment of the U.S. population is just too large for ordinary free thinking individuals to overcome.

Unfortunately, in your analysis you've only got a very small part of the picture in that they merely want everyone to be like them.

It's a bit more insidious than that. They want to bring on the apocalypse that will be the end-of-days showdown between God's people and evil.

THAT'S who will have her lacquered talon poised over our nucular button.

She does know the basics though unlike Obama who said there were 57 states and that his faith was Muslim (until George Stephanopolous quickly corrected him). I'm pretty sure that she knows that there are only 50 states and that she is in fact a Christian.

At this point, Biden must be thinking he has a serious problem on his hands. How is he going to debate Palin on national television without laughing his ass off with her answers? He'll end up with bruised ribs.

If I asked half the people on this website what the bush doctrine, I would get at least two different answers. 1)Those who harbor terrorists are just as guilty as the terrorists or 2) Preemption. The other half wouldn't even have an idea. Enough of the gotcha journalism. Did she sound good the way she answered? Of course not, but this trash has to stop.

I've noticed since the interview Sarah has had with Charlie Gibson that some of her supporters have been explaining that they prefer hearing from a candidate who is just like themselves, not erudite of current events and issues that may affect our nation and it's citizens. Apparently, some prefer to elect as president/VP someone who may be encumbered by family life and hockey games and hunting instead of being bothered by the complexities of governing. It is and has been evident that Governor Palin is not a fool, but is certainly not prepared to head our country. If some people prefer to find a date or a bosom buddy in Sarah Palin, they could probably do themselves the most good by ignoring their desire to satisfy their own personal wants. The subconscious mind is in total control of these votes. People so don't want to vote for the African-American that they refuse to pose similar questions and challenges at Sarah Palin that had long entrenched the Obama campaign for over a year. For instance, people claim that Obama is an unknown even to this day-not Sarah Palin. Claims that Obama is a Muslim at the same time people were angry at his Christian pastor (doesn't make any sense)-not Sarah Palin. Obama doesn't have enough experience to this day-not Sarah Palin. Good Luck Wrighting this Wrong.

Ha ha ha so stupid, what a joke. Palin doesn't know what preemptive war is, but she supports it. HA HA HA what a bimbo.

"'Palin doesn't know what preemptive war is,"

Actually, she knew exactly what pre-emptive war is, note her comment, and i paraphrase, "if we have a lot of good intel, and there's an imminent threat, we can/should act pre-emptively".

She might not have known that the Bush Doctrine = pre-emptive attack, but in the course of calling someone else, lets see, Stupid, Joke, and bimbo, you have missed the fact that you have your facts wrong.

Which is pretty funny.

Wrong answer! She said:

""Charlie, if there is enough intelligent and legitimate evidence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country," she said."

Which clearly indicates that she was being as vague as humanly possible because she didn't understand what "pre-emptive" meant. "Defend our country" generally means defense, not offense.

What's funny is that Charlie had to tell her what the Bush Doctrine IS before she could answer it.

And in your "paraphrase", YOU included the word pre-emtively. In HER answer, she didn't even allude to it until Charlie told her what the Bush Doctrine is.

Oh please, weren't you paying attention in 2003? The Bush doctrine reserves the right for the US to pre-emptively strike a country that we believe to be a danger to us.

It's really that simple.

That's the problem. Rep.ublicans would rather have their leaders think for them. It's easier that way.

It also means that we treat countries that aid terrorism the same as the terrorists.

Are you kidding me?!?!?!?!? This woman is "supposed" to be prepared to take over the presidency if something (god forbid) happens to John McCain!

The Bush Doctrine is the right, of America, to pre-emptivly strike anyone who we think may attack us or pose a threat to us in the future.........Is that goood enough for you?!?!? I would have at least liked to hear HER answer that question with some intelligence. It is obvious from that interview that they didn't rehearse that question. The others came off as though she has been practicing specific lines associated with topics that I am sure ABC told the campaign that they were going to cover.

She sounded as though she was a freshman college student giving a speech about world event, NOT someone who is ready to run the largest economy, military, and democracy in the world. If she is then I could be president.

Please STOP defending her at all costs and start questioning her readiness, judgement, and intelligence (it is obvious that she doesn't have a firm grasp on the issues). I see now why the McCain campaign has kept her away from the press and repeating the same speech. Good at memorization, lite on the knowledge.

It appears that there is little, if any, room for debate on this website. Agree with the mob or be damned. What a shame.

Can we stop talking about Palin now?

Yes, I know she was terrible yesterday, but obsessing about it is not going to win us new votes. The left saw her as laughable, the right thought she did fine, and the middle doesn't really care. We need that middle. We need to address their needs then get them to the polls to vote for our guy.

Our obsessing about Palin is not helpful. It makes the right just fight harder to protect her, but we need to be attacking McCain right now. He's the top of the ticket. He's the one we can take down.

ECONOMY, ECONOMY, ECONOMY. Speak to the needs of people in the middle.

Then each of us need to contribute to the ground game and sign up those people to vote for Obama.

Ok, totally off topic, but couldn't resist.

Obama is all about equal pay for equal work right? Women make 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, right?

So why does obama pay his own women staffers 83 cents on the dollar?

Oh, yeah, because he doesn't hire many women to top levels of his administration. (7 of top 20 paid staffers are women)

That old anti-women McSame has to be worse, right? Wrong. $1.04 for women to $1.00 for men.

Why? More women at the top levels at his staff. (13 of top 20 paid staffers = women)
