Gibson Palin

ABC's Charlie Gibson is drawing positive reviews for his interview of Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

New York Times' Alessanda Stanley:

Ms. Palin didn't look rattled or lose her cool in her first interview with Mr. Gibson, the network anchor, on Thursday night, but she skittered through with general answers, sticking to talking points that flowed out quickly and spiritedly, a little too much by rote to satisfy her interviewer that she was giving his questions serious consideration. When Ms. Palin seemed not to know exactly what the Bush doctrine is, Mr. Gibson made a point of explaining it -- pre-emptive self-defense -- and demanded that she tell him whether she agreed with it.

ABC News delivered the first glimpse of Ms. Palin without a script or a cheering audience, and it was a strained and illuminating conversation. Ms. Palin, who kept inserting Mr. Gibson's nickname, Charlie, into her answers, as if to convey an old hand's conviviality, tried to project self-confidence, poise and even expertise: She let Mr. Gibson know that she had personally reassured the Georgian president and correctly pronounced his last name, Saakashvili. At times, her eyes looked uncertain and her voice hesitated, and she looked like a student trying to bend prepared answers to fit unexpected questions.

Mr. Gibson, who sat back in his chair, impatiently wriggling his foot, had the skeptical, annoyed tone of a university president who agrees to interview the daughter of a trustee but doesn't believe she merits admission.

Washington Post's Howard Kurtz:

Anyone who said that Charlie Gibson might go easy on Sarah Palin might want to quickly delete those comments.

What the ABC newsman conducted yesterday was a serious, professional interview that went right at the heart of what we want and need to know about the governor: Could she be president? Does she understand the nuances of international affairs? Does she have a world view?

He was all business, respectful but persistent.

The Baltimore Sun's David Zurawik:

ABC anchorman Charles Gibson came across as a stern, no-nonsense senior professor putting a graduate student through a tough exam in the first part of his interview with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

It was round one of a three-part interview that will air on the network through tomorrow night, and you had to give it as a split decision to Gibson. But he was far from perfect, and he clearly received a lot of help from the way the interview was edited.

The usually genial Gibson was firm and authoritative without being hectoring as he and the Republican vice presidential candidate sat stiffly knees to knees in leather chairs discussing God, national security and the possibility of military action against Russia if it invades Georgia again. Gibson wasted no time in the excerpted portion of the interview that aired on ABC World News in asking about her qualifications.

i really get blown away by the fact that ...MOST of who is for the mccain/palin campaign, are against the banning of birth control and abortions under extrememe circumstances....i mean its like trying to say that 1+1= 3 ....ITS JUST NOT FRIGGN RIGHT !!

how can we talk about the glass ceiling and womans rights when, electing their ideas into office... they are actually taking our choices away...

More than 118million people elected him for starters.
The entire world want's him as president.
He has been referred to as the most proggressive leader in modern history.
He has the education that proves his critical thinking skills and judgement are on point.
He spent 8 yrs in the state senate. Doing the grunt work most US Senators don't do.
He is a US Senator for the past 4 yrs. Led one of the most important ethics reform bills and also championed nuclear proliferation globally.
He Inspires people. WHen a people move together they seem to get things done!
Do you realize how many people are paying attention to this election, all because of Barrack Hussein Obama.
He is very sharp. I don't think you can say McCain is sharp.
Barrackobama.com ( His campaign) is extremelky succesfuly well oiled machine that gives a preview of what his adminstration will look like. Hillary clinton end up being bankrupt and fired so many people and didnt really get her footing till she played dirty.

Whatelse you waan know?
Could you become president?

Before I watched clips of the interview I went ahead and read comments on the ABC News boards. I knew Mr. Gibson was tough on her when about half of the comments accused Gibson of being a sexist pig. Sexist is going to lose it's meaning if Palin's kool aid crew keeps spouting out that word anytime someone asks her a real question.

Based off of the clips I watched she's like Bush jr. in alot of ways. When a question was posed at her she would try and use a talking point she's been told to use regardless if it's answering the question. She wasn't horrible but you can definitely tell she isn't prepared to be VP.

She was given the questions in advance. This is hardly an unscripted interview. Pure stagecraft. And that's how the Republicans will continue to control the media for Palin. What distesses me is just how many people fall for this. And we wonder why this country is in the mess that it is. With an ignorant Electorate they can continue to get away with anything. I am truly in dispair over the future of the country and the way America is spiraling into decline.

Nonsense.

She could not have not known what "The Bush Doctrine" referred to had she been given the questions in advance. She also would have known to waffle (like Obama) on the Georgia question instead of giving what is a correct answer in accordance with NATO doctrine.

Quite unlike the Olbermann "interview" of Obama, Olbermann simply read questions from Obama's staff that were meant to set up prepared mini stump speeches.

If that was how she handled a pre-scripted interview I can't wait to see someone ask her some unscripted questions!

She failed that interview miserably and is truly all hype and no substance.

Oh, I am quite sure that while she was given the questions, CHARLES Gibson is sly enough to word them in such a way as to throw her completely off. Instead of asking if she agreed with George's decisions on pre-emptive self-defense, he asked if she agrees with the Bush doctrine. And her answer was priceless: If we have the intelligence that we will be attacked - just like Bush did before he attacked - IRAQ!

I respect Charles Gibson as a journalist. I do not know who is reponsible for when the first interview aired, but choosing a National Day of Mourning, for victims globally, is disrespectful and a new low.

The interview airs tonight. There were some clips released to the media last night. It was neither "disrespectul" nor a "new low" to do so. This woman needs to be exposed for the dangerously unprepared neophyte that she is, no matter what day it is. In my mind, getting that first glimpse on Sept. 11 is a stark reminder that she is NOT READY to deal with these ultra-important issues.

This should come as no surprise to anyone. She is an empty suit...but, yes, with lipstick. The interview confirms that the GOP has one political chance in this election - to pander to the "ignoramus vote" - the same demographic that that let them keep Dubya in office. Ugh! Here we go again.

Another woman hater. Great. This does not help the Democratic cause. Why do we keep shooting ourselves in the foot. Sarah Palin is a successful mother who was voted to be governor of state with a $11 billion budget. Plus she is only one of two women in our nation's history to be nominated as
a candidate for Vice President of the United States. Rip apart her views on abortion, religion and energy exploration, but please don't call her an empty suit or a stupid woman. If not, we are going to lose the woman's vote for sure! And we will all be saying President McCann and Vice President Palin.

I was one of the many that thought Gibson was gonna hold her hand and carefully walk her through the whole thing.

Oh how wrong I was. He did what the media is SUPPOSED to do. He asked simple yet direct questions that are pertinent to issues, and asked them again when he wasn't given an on-topic answer.

Well done, Mr. Gibson. Well done.

I agree. I also thought Charlie Gibson was going to be a pushover. (Especially after his behavior during the primary debate). But, he seemed to be a straight shooter. I only hope the rest of the media doesn't slant this their way. They have a habit of doing that. I'll never forget the debates between Bush/Gore, and Bush/Kerry. I thought the Democrat won both hands down, but the media reaction afterward made me wonder what they were watching.
We need intelligence in the White House. Intelligence should be a prerequisite, not a negative. I want a President that is smarter than me, more informed than me, and more aware than me. Not a President that needs training wheels on their big wheels.

Let's talk about Sarah Palin till everyone falls in love with her and we all have the nerve to look surprised that people don't know enough about Barack O'bama and the republicans win.
Perehaps the strategy of taking ALL of our attention off our candidate is working.
Sarah Palin scores low marks for foreign policy . The Bush doctrine should be learned so that no one will repeat it , I'm glad the interviewer taught it to her.
The vice president job description is presiding over the Senate -president of the senate if you will. The U.S Constitution assigns no executive powers to the Vice President unless president is removed from office when the vp succeeds to president.
So once again, we imbue these offices with qualifications that simply are not true.
Most of your parents are eligible and I'm sure eminently qualified to be VP ( I think common sense is the quality needed), provided they were born here, were over 35 and resided here for the last 7 years ( unlike John McCain I might add-Who is NOT eligible for the office of President of the United States-and I don't care if the Supreme Court passed a resolution or not -they didn't write the Constitution,)So we popularize Sarah Palin , increase sympathy for her , reduce common sense and risk the election.Good job on the interview -she doesn't have a qualification she doesn't need.Vote O'bama

She is the neo-con's pick. William Crystal is supporting her, the architect of the Iraqi mess. Do you remember McCain releasing his medical records on the Friday before Memorial Day. It was tomb. The neo-cons don't support McCain, but support Palin. Maybe, we should be paying attention. Who cares about lipstick, hockey moms, troopergate and the bridge to nowhere. Find out what direction this lady will take the country if she is president. I want to know exactly what she will do about Iran, Georgia, Pakistan, et all. Or whatever else the neo-cons are dreaming up. The fact that this website, has a button for Lindsey Lohan and not one for the Georgian Conflict, is sleeping at the wheel. Where there is oil, there is potential for war. By the way, Russia will have a nuclear warship in Venezuela soon.
Please, pay attention, this one could get ugly. It is obvious what the October surprise will be.

After the reaction to the news that Gibson would be interviewing Palin, he knew he to step up to the plate and conduct a serious interview. Trust me, he knew his reputation (whatever is left of it) was on the line. He had to do what he did last night, he absolutely had no choice.

The gravitas that we come to expect from a President was totaling lacking. Hillary had it. Obama, Biden and McCain have it. Palin doesn't. Just can't see her standing up to Putin.

She sounded like she had just crammed for an exam that she should have been studying for over the last 2 years, rather than the last 2 days. Charlie had to ask the same question several times before getting a direct answer, and often did not get a direct answer.

But she does know about drilling -- so did Bush and Cheney.
