NEW YORK — Christian Siriano means business.

Last season's "Project Runway" winner, who showed his debut collection Thursday _ one day before the reality program hosts its latest runway finale _ wants the fashion world to know he's not a flash in the pan.

"I just think there are so many reality shows that people become famous but they're not really famous for anything," Siriano said in a phone interview Monday while casting models. "At least people on 'Project Runway' are talented."

His namesake line, shown to an audience of the show's alums and judges, was indeed a remarkable achievement. Along with futuristic skinny pants and ruffled blouses, Siriano unveiled looks that are already his signature styles, like layers of chiffon circles.

But whereas his "Runway" collection was taken from Victorian styling, the 22-year-old designer said his inspiration this time came more organically, from nature.

The theme of a stormy night was repeated in dresses covered with layers of chiffon circles like groups of dark rain clouds. A one-shoulder mini dress made from diagonal tiers of gray and neon yellow chiffon strips looked like a rainy sky lit up with lightning bolts.

"There were a few dresses I thought were very beautiful," supermodel Heidi Klum said after the show.

"Project Runway" mentor Tim Gunn was also effusive in his praise for Siriano, whom he referred to last year as "Marc Jacobs for the next generation."

"I expected to be wowed," he said. "You know, in my own way I've been in this industry for a long time, and I'm a bit jaded, but I was blown away."

Still, Fern Mallis, who oversees New York Fashion Week, cautions against overconfidence in this flighty industry. "It's a bit early to be making those assumptions," she said of Gunn's comparison to Jacobs.

Siriano plans to expand his line in coming seasons, saying that the spring collection was limited by money and time spent on other projects that came his way post-"Runway." And he has advice to offer the designers currently competing for his title: You better work it.

"Really it should be about the work," he said. "Because after the show is over, you get thrown into the industry, you just have to have it all. It's really tough. Actually, it's killing me."

Maybe it's me ... but I'm not impressed with Christian's design. He had more originality & creativity on the show ... now his "line" all looks pretty much the same (yes, I understand there should be some cohesiveness ... but nothing was like "wow!"

It always amazes me when the designers never pay heed to Tim Gunn's suggestions, then they lose. Korto and Leann are the only ones who pay attention, and they're the best ones. Jared is good too, but those two are better. And Kenley's attitude is amazing - she's here trying to GET noticed, yet she refuses to learn? Sitting there saying your stuff is perfect! She's conceited. Telling Diane Von Furstenberg what she "needed in her collection?" Kenley needs a less whiney voice.

ManhattanRat... Did you not watch the most recent episode. Tim basically shat on Jorrel's design, saying it looks like he tried to take a school mom's winter coat and make it couture. Jorrel didn't change a thing and actually won that week. There have been many times he didn't like something and the judges love it, so its not always a good idea to listen to criticism.

Terri is now off the show because she changed her design because Christian Soriano didnt like the fur collar of her "Leo" design... I believe that ruined the entire look. Without the "lion" collar, it didn't look leo at all. It ended up looking like some tacky burning man festival get up.

that's schoolmarm not mom

schoolmarm - a female schoolteacher, esp. of the old-time country school type, popularly held to be strict and priggish.

Correction JoyIsGwen - Tim also told Jorrel that his dress would either be winning one or go down in flames - and Jorrel won.

I read the article and kept thinking, why no photos? Thanks.

Though I kept thinking, those models need a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts. They are wasting away.

BORING and contrived.
Hate it when male designers try to make women look like boys.

What about when the runway models themselves look that way to begin with?

I concur! I just never understood when she won with that dress from hell. Do you remember it? It was horrible and poofy and multi-colored and just plain odd.

Heck, she cried 2 weeks ago during the Diane von Furstenberg challenge saying that she has only designed for Kmart (and some other Discount store) instead of working with some big name designers that many of the others have worked with. And yet she refuses to listen to any good advice from the judges or other contestants. It's positively ludicrous!

And the way she went on & on about her Aquarius dress - she should've been sent packing 'cause she won't stop talking - nevermind that the dress was awful!

Kenley will be gone soon enough. The minute she said "I don't look at collections" she sealed her fate. By telling them she doesn't study her field, she took herself right out of the running. Her ego is getting the better of her. She's just lucky that Blaine (WTF WAS THAT THING) and Teri (attitude with an attitude) had pieces just that much worse than hers.
