NEW YORK — If there were any doubts that the sidekick was stealing the show, they were put to rest when Sarah Palin took off for Alaska with a wave from the tarmac by John McCain.

His crowds suddenly dwindled. The exuberant cheering heard day after day during two weeks of joint appearances went away. And the Republican presidential candidate's schedule began to resemble the lightness of May instead of the full throttle of September.

Meantime, Palin's campaign plane taking her home to Alaska was so crowded it had to let off some cargo to get the weight down.

This was a striking week to see the contrast between McCain and Palin together and the dimmed wattage around the nominee when they are apart. They are expected to reunite early next week.

With her, McCain scored the largest crowd of his presidential campaign. An estimated 23,000 people crammed a park in the Washington suburb of Fairfax, Va., on a weekday morning.

Music blared and people roared as the Arizona senator and his high-energy running mate took the stage. "I am so grateful for this turnout," McCain enthused. Aides grinned ear-to-ear. The crowd shouted "Sarah, Sarah" and women who showed up said they were excited to learn about her life and accomplishments.

Without Palin later in the day, McCain went to a diner in Philadelphia.

He held a discussion on economic woes there with half a dozen businesswomen. A large crowd backing Democratic rival Barack Obama gathered in the indoor marketplace where the Down Home Diner is located, and yelled "Obama, Obama" so loudly that McCain and his guests at times had to lean far over the table to hear each other speak.

McCain's remarks to reporters afterward were similarly drowned out. "Pennsylvania is a battleground state, as we can tell," he said with barely contained fury. Aides' faces fell.

Palin's arrival in Alaska, her first step away from McCain, only continued her streak of large, wildly excited crowds. The Alaska governor was greeted at the airport by about 2,000 people who nearly choked her up with their happy welcome. High-level McCain aides went with her to help her prepare for her first big interview.

"She's on a wild ride," Obama told David Letterman, conceding she's the phenomenon of the moment. The Democrat cracked: "As somebody who used to be on the cover of Time and Newsweek _ those were the days _ I had a recent offer with Popular Mechanics: centerfold with a wrench."

The lesson from all of this isn't lost on McCain. Campaigns usually split up their presidential and vice presidential candidates so the ticket can cover more ground, which is what Obama and his running mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, are doing. This could be especially important because the late conventions shortened the general-election season.

But the McCain camp has calculated it needs to put him back with his No. 2, and probably keep them together for much of the fall campaign.

Until they are back together, McCain has no rallies and not much going on.

On Friday, McCain only had two public appointments, both aimed at female voters: interviews with his wife Cindy on "The View" and "The Rachael Ray Show."

He planned to stay behind closed doors Saturday at his campaign headquarters, then travel Sunday to a NASCAR race in New Hampshire, which provides a built-in, pumped-up crowd the campaign does not have to generate itself. Then it's on to Florida for a fundraiser.

Palin, meantime, is headlining her own rallies in Anchorage and Carson City, Nev., on Saturday before flying to Colorado.

She's proved adept at electrifying core Republicans and intriguing many independents, even as scrutiny of her record intensifies and Democrats label her a lightweight.

Aides have sheltered her from spontaneous exchanges with voters and kept a tight lid on press access, leaving little doubt that they worry about how she will do in any setting that is not highly orchestrated. She stumbled over foreign policy in her ABC News interview despite careful preparation.

Still, on the stage, the understudy is upstaging the lead actor. That can be hard on a star's ego but McCain is not complaining. There are worse problems for a presidential campaign to have.

Their crowds were already small, without Palin, they are just smaller.

The rumor that they are changing their signs to 'Palin/McCain' is not true.

So, McCain's Celebrity Ads are a result of his jealousy of Obama, and McCain wants to pretend he is a 'Celebrity" with Palin at his side. So sad, so dishonest. Now it appears that after McCain tears down and insults Obama's ideas, he then steals them.

They will try election fraud-- that is how kerry lost ohio in '04--- they will try to screw up the absentee ballots by double-dipping-- they will try to disenfranchise blacks again---they are to be watched-- especially in the swing states-- Obama/Biden should have extra ops placed in ohio--- if they could they'd take the kitchen sinks out of poor ohio--

Remember how refreshing Ross Perot was until we got sick of him? I think everyone is rushing out to see Palin the same way the rubberneckers slow down to look a a terrible car accident -- out of curiosity, so hopefully this too will pass. We all know how loyal the Republicans are, so no hope there, but hopefully some of those "independents" will come to their senses before it's too late. But how anyone could be truly undecided at this point in our country's history is beyond me.

I was an independent, not now. I’m tired of the McCain / Palin act already. We’ve endured 8 years of deceit and it’s time for an overhaul. McCain started out as well meaning and honorable but has evolved to disgraceful and dishonorable.

He bypassed many worthy and capable women to choose Sarah Palin. She appears to be very smart and likeable however I have zero confidence in her. Her mode of operation is to emerge as knowledgeable and above reproach, she is neither. Her best decision would have been to decline the offer of being the VP. She brings a lot baggage, deceit, inexperience and many questions about her.

It’s appalling that Republicans across the nation are praising Sarah and showing massive approval without a sound reason. Is McCain / Palin all you have? Bush/Chaney looks palatable.

McCain / Palin operate under the “Nine Commandments”. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” has been deleted from their hearts and campaign. My vote is for Obama/Biden 2008.

I think Pal.in's popularity simply proves Mc.Cain is being rejected within his own party.

Voters in both parties are sickened by the decline in America. Even Mc.C has had to 'about face' from 'the economy is fundamentally strong' to 'America is broken'. On issue after issue, only the most fervently partisan or the truly uninformed think we're better off and headed in the right direction.

With all her problems, Pal.in at least gives Republicans a chance to vote their gut - meaning, vote against Mc.Cain's history in Washington, against Bush and the last eight years, against pandering politics that have squandered billions and years when the nation was in crises. It's a vote against the past.

Problem is, while it may be cathartic to reach for someone to change Washington from the outside, in this case it will simply ensure the insiders another four years in power. It's a cynical con, same way the religious right were conned the last eight years, as David Kuo's book describes.

But it's clear: in the hearts of the right, a vote for Pal.in is a vote against Mc.C.

This is my theory on why some voters would go for McCain even though they don't like him.

They weren't thrilled with McCain, but they couldn't bring themselves to telling the truth. They were looking for any reason not to support Obama. However, not voting for Obama could make it appear they're racists, so they were hoping for a miracle. Along comes Palin, but she has little for them to cling to. Yet, because she's a female they could now use that as an excuse not to vote for Obama's skin, uh I mean Obama.

So, when Palin came out, they were so grateful they had a better excuse to go with McCain besides Obama's skin, they rejoiced...

"They" still don't have a "better excuse" .... Palin is under an active on-going investigation for wrongful acts of misusing her official govenmental powers ... her husband has also been implicated!!! Palin has misrepresented her political stances as well as refused to be vetted by the American public in the same manners which ALL OTHER candidates have already matriculated!!! No other candidate would be remotely considered a viable candidate for POTUS with this "active" MO!!

Sadly, these are hardened racist ... we will need to contend with this fact for many, many moons I am sure!!!

But, "they" don't represent the whole of America, to the contrary, they represent the shame ... people of sane reason will rise above this rediculous bigotry and elect Barack Obama POTUS in Nov., proving to the world that all Americans are not STUPID!!

That may be the calculus, but it depends heavily on Palin being seen as able and capable to hold the #2 job.

It also depends on Palin being seen as real change. The Gibson interviews indicate that there is nothing new, fresh or innovative about Palin as a politcian. She is an attractively wrapped package concealing hard autocratic and NeoCon tendencies. I don't know if she really feels that the less than $30B involved in ALL earmarks (most of which would EASILY pass as part of regular appropriations procedures) would significantly affect a $2T budget, but she's been coached to assert as much. I don't know if she really feels that it might be necessary to INVADE RUSSIA, but in an effort to show that she COULD BE this nation's version of Thatcher (which is an an INSULT to Thatcher - a very smart woman notwithstanding her ideology) , she's being coached to assert as much.

Obama/Biden will certainly press the point that the stated positions and political records of McCain and Palin are EXACTLY how they will operate in office. Even in the face of clear evidence that the Bush Administration has turned more and more of the federal budget as some type of profit center for Big Business, McCain and Palin assert that to fix that we need FEWER restrictions and regulations on the Private Sector.

That's not change, that's more of the same.

Yes, all that you say is true. However, the problem is the right-wing conservative bunch does not care. They will never vote for a black man as President, no matter how qualified and intelligent he is - they just wont.

I'm new here. As I have browsed through post after post, I am amazed. Amazed at the hatred shared here. Amazed at the mud-slinging. For certain that 99% of the mud won't stick to any wall. So why do it? Why is it here? Why is there so much negativity? Are all your lives really that bad? Is this country really that bad in your views?
Christian bashing...a website full of non-believers. May I make statement that is manifest beyond mistake?
Every U.S.president we have ever had has been a Christian. 88% of the U.S. population is a theist/deist of some sort. And don't give me the BS about Thomas Jefferson not being a Christian...it is just that, BS.
Jefferson was anything but irreligious, anything but an enemy to Christian faith. Our nation's third president was, in fact, a student of Scripture who attended church regularly, and was an active member of the Anglican Church, where he gave his money to support many different congregations and Christian causes.
You can't ignore it. Palin ain't bringing it...it has always been here, and it will never 'go away'. Deal with it and stop sniveling.
Ouch...I know that hurts. It is the way of life in your land of freedoms. I am not attempting to 'force Christianity down your throat'. Simply attain some maturity and come to the realization the 44th president of the U.S. will be a Christian.

May I take this opportunity to speak to the overblown statement of "Christian-bashing". It has ONLY been since radical, right-wing Christians have tried to take over our government that a backlash has risen. I am not a Christian, but have always respected people for different spiritual beliefs; unfortunately have rarely had that respect returned. I believe in the power of prayer, but feel our government leaders should not promote this as the only way to govern and/or make decisions.

Those of us who believe that organized faith has a valuable place in this country, and should use their power to help the disinfranchised, will continue to fight against the misuse of religion to gain power, and to make decisions that effect ALL Americans.

One more thing, to know that a non-Christian would have absolutely NO chance of becoming president in American is nothing to be proud of.

When they were together, she did all the talking and he just stood there with his hands held together, and a silly grin on his face. Couldn't help but wonder how long that would last. And how about Cindy, she had to change her hairdo to make room for the new star.

EVERY Obama office is on notice to actively look for this. It's happening here in Michigan, and my cousin in Colorado tells me it's happening there as well.

The game plan is to keep tabs on EVERY new voter we register and "hold their hands" until they cast a ballot. It is labor intensive, but it gives our MANY THOUSANDS of volunteers in each state SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT but very easy to do, especially those people who are shy about going door-to-door or being on the phone.
