NEW YORK — If there were any doubts that the sidekick was stealing the show, they were put to rest when Sarah Palin took off for Alaska with a wave from the tarmac by John McCain.

His crowds suddenly dwindled. The exuberant cheering heard day after day during two weeks of joint appearances went away. And the Republican presidential candidate's schedule began to resemble the lightness of May instead of the full throttle of September.

Meantime, Palin's campaign plane taking her home to Alaska was so crowded it had to let off some cargo to get the weight down.

This was a striking week to see the contrast between McCain and Palin together and the dimmed wattage around the nominee when they are apart. They are expected to reunite early next week.

With her, McCain scored the largest crowd of his presidential campaign. An estimated 23,000 people crammed a park in the Washington suburb of Fairfax, Va., on a weekday morning.

Music blared and people roared as the Arizona senator and his high-energy running mate took the stage. "I am so grateful for this turnout," McCain enthused. Aides grinned ear-to-ear. The crowd shouted "Sarah, Sarah" and women who showed up said they were excited to learn about her life and accomplishments.

Without Palin later in the day, McCain went to a diner in Philadelphia.

He held a discussion on economic woes there with half a dozen businesswomen. A large crowd backing Democratic rival Barack Obama gathered in the indoor marketplace where the Down Home Diner is located, and yelled "Obama, Obama" so loudly that McCain and his guests at times had to lean far over the table to hear each other speak.

Story continues below

McCain's remarks to reporters afterward were similarly drowned out. "Pennsylvania is a battleground state, as we can tell," he said with barely contained fury. Aides' faces fell.

Palin's arrival in Alaska, her first step away from McCain, only continued her streak of large, wildly excited crowds. The Alaska governor was greeted at the airport by about 2,000 people who nearly choked her up with their happy welcome. High-level McCain aides went with her to help her prepare for her first big interview.

"She's on a wild ride," Obama told David Letterman, conceding she's the phenomenon of the moment. The Democrat cracked: "As somebody who used to be on the cover of Time and Newsweek _ those were the days _ I had a recent offer with Popular Mechanics: centerfold with a wrench."

The lesson from all of this isn't lost on McCain. Campaigns usually split up their presidential and vice presidential candidates so the ticket can cover more ground, which is what Obama and his running mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, are doing. This could be especially important because the late conventions shortened the general-election season.

But the McCain camp has calculated it needs to put him back with his No. 2, and probably keep them together for much of the fall campaign.

Until they are back together, McCain has no rallies and not much going on.

On Friday, McCain only had two public appointments, both aimed at female voters: interviews with his wife Cindy on "The View" and "The Rachael Ray Show."

He planned to stay behind closed doors Saturday at his campaign headquarters, then travel Sunday to a NASCAR race in New Hampshire, which provides a built-in, pumped-up crowd the campaign does not have to generate itself. Then it's on to Florida for a fundraiser.

Palin, meantime, is headlining her own rallies in Anchorage and Carson City, Nev., on Saturday before flying to Colorado.

She's proved adept at electrifying core Republicans and intriguing many independents, even as scrutiny of her record intensifies and Democrats label her a lightweight.

Aides have sheltered her from spontaneous exchanges with voters and kept a tight lid on press access, leaving little doubt that they worry about how she will do in any setting that is not highly orchestrated. She stumbled over foreign policy in her ABC News interview despite careful preparation.

Still, on the stage, the understudy is upstaging the lead actor. That can be hard on a star's ego but McCain is not complaining. There are worse problems for a presidential campaign to have.

What a charming political couple they make, Palin/McCain or McCain/Palin, whichever is more appropriate and chivalrous?

Actually the dynamic duo reminds me a lot of George Burns and Gracie Allen only we all knew Gracie was pretending to be dumb for comedic purposes, however in the case of the republican candidate for VP I think her playing the inexperienced foreign policy novice is rather humorous but not an act?

Obama/Biden

For a return to sanity in America.

For all those conservatives decrying the scrutiny heaped upon Palin by saying, "She's not the president and it should be about the person at the top of the ticket," it appears that they are now getting their chance to put their money where their mouth is. As Biden said after the RepubConv, the SILENCE IS DEAFENING. It's ironic that for all the campaign's talk about "celebrity" it will end up being a celebrity that McCain must depend on to draw his crowds. The idea that Palin will need to "accompany" McCain to get the crowds could end up being a political albatross that he'll wear until the election. The question is whether the maverick will risk TV coverage without Palin down the stretch and split to cover the country or cede the travelogue to Obama/Biden. He can ill-afford scenes on the nightly news showing him at half-empty middle-school gyms while Obama gathers larger crowds; especially if the MSM gets a spine and starts knocking down the patently false statements that have been coming out recently.

Unfortunately for Dr. Frankenstein, his Monster has escaped from the lab. The question is whether he can get her back under control and wow the villagers by "Puttin' On The Ritz," as in Young Frankenstein, or will it end up being more akin to Shelley's novel?

McCain is nothing without Palin, and she is nothing without her Teleprompter loaded with a prepared speech. I watched her speech when she arrived home from the campaign trail, nice but nothing like the convention speech. She was well practiced for that speech. She does not look that good close up.

Appointing SP, a political neophyte as the savior of the GOP reveals the depth of desperation and how far they have fallen as the party of the Barry Goldwater platform. A JM presidency will make the populace long for the good old days (?) of Nixon and W.
Circus clowns have more common sense and character than these two.

For many in the GOP base, they look at Palin's weaknesses as trifles. No pro-life loving person is perfect, they would say, and God forgives those who are willing to turn over a new leaf.

But they expect perfection from a Democrat. If Obama had a pregnant daughter, O'Reilly would call him a pinhead, and would certainly accuse him to be a parent who is lax with parental duties, further opining that his campaign matters more to him than his own daughters.

Most Evangelicals trust everything their pastors say. That is why when pastors say that McCain is the best candidate to become President based on his choice of Palin, most Christians would believe and follow their pastors' preachings. Or else, they would be guilty of sin in voting for Obama, the "baby-killer," as they call him.

In view of this, every Democrat out there should go to the polls this November and vote for Obama. It is also up to Democrats to reach out to Independents.

Remember that he is black. There is still a pervading sense of racism that exists which people do not talk about openly. it would find expression in the voting booth where they have to choose between a white man and a black man to become President.

Obama has to work harder for people's hearts, unlike Palin who just needs to appear and look pretty, carrying her baby with Down Syndrome to earn their trust for McCain.

Not all Evangelicals are enthralled with Palin. There is a small but significant number who have soured on partisan politics after 2 decades of Falwell/Robinson activism. Palin is exciting for them now, but as the ABC interviews show, she is rapidly morphing into "just another politician": one who carefully answers questions instead of preaching the true faith.

And the answer that she gave regarding abortion is the one that will hurt her most in the weeks to come. It's the right answer, as it parrots what Obama stated in his acceptance speech. But true zealots on that issue will come away feeling betrayed. "Reducing the number of abortions" is code for allowing birth control, most of which is considered defacto abortion by this crowd. It may soften her for true independent voters, but it makes her less than the modern day Joan d'Arc that the Movement crowd thought they were getting. The Trig story capsulizes their devotion for her, and anything that signals "Trig lite" is a betrayal of their core beliefs.

Some entity in the liberal independent expenditure crowd would do well to put up some "guerrilla" advertising on religious talk radio in swing states praising Palin for "moderating her views on choice." McCain/Palin can't afford any defections from the 2004 Bush/Cheney vote in states like VA and FL, and this is the kind of thing that can make already weary culture warriors less exicted.

I have a very serious question to ask anyone who is loving the Palin choice.

Would you feel the same way if she looked like Janet Reno? ( sorry Janet ) If she were 64 instead of 44? If she weighed 200 pounds? Given all the same qualifications that she brings to the table ( not much ) would you still think she was a good choice?

It calls for intellectual honesty..........so I don't hold out much hope of getting an honest answer.

I dont' love the Palin choice.. but I hear what you are saying.. and agree with you. She would NOT have been chosen, with her intellect, if she were homley. She would have to be 10 times more experienced and intellingent.

But, with her attributes.. she can be as dim as need be.. to get the job done.

The things is, if you get up there and exaggerate, lie, and pretend on your record and your qualifications, and diss your opponent ........well, why wouldn't you look good. After getting to know the REAL Sarah Palin, she looks pretty average. She doesn't seem to think things through. And seems to share a vindictive nature with McCain. Knowing the real Sarah makes her float back to earth doesn't it.

Average? She's average? She thinks she has foreign policy credentials because she can SEE Russia from her state. She thinks the world is 4,000 years old. She thinks the Bush Doctrine was just "President Bush's world view." She thinks Iraqi's were responsible for 911, and that we were attacked because we "love freedom."

How is that average? That's ignorant! My 9th grader knows better than this!!! Should we put her up there and say she's qualified too? She's not quite got the age thing down but at least she's been to several foreign countries. Holy COW!!!

I think Xenopus' point is that Palin's intial splash into the political pool allowed some people to transfer all sorts of things to her. Now, not so much. She clearly is not as intelligent as Clinton, or even Schafley. She is not a willing scholar on issues that are not in her "wheelhouse."

So in that respect she is less the conservative antithesis of liberal feminism than was probably first imagined. She's more like a 30 second ad than a one hour in depth interview. Can that hold up unchallenged for 50 more days? And as her luster fades, so does McCain's.

The trick is to show that her short comings are McCain's, in essence show that she is a victim of his ambition and poor judgement.

I think it is because she is an evangelical, and a female. But the evangelical part is what has people ready to vote for McCain. It is not good news people, because the population of this country that admits to being part of the evangelical christian right is huge. We who aren't need to get busy, very busy.

The part of this country that admits to being part of the far-right Evangelical Christian fringe is NOT huge. The political spectrum is a beel curve, with the least numbers being on the far-right and far-left, and the fast majoirty in the middle as moderates.

Those Evandelicals are ignorant fanatics, gullible dupes, but they are not "huge" in number.

Regarding the evangelica vote block , in 2000 , less than 50% of ALL eligible voters BOTHERED to vote and Bush (along with some additon assist/help) did NOT get the POPULAR vote but did gt the title and the Electoral votes by just over 500 votes in Florida to sway the Electoral votes hs way but overall WE , the nation had less than 25% of VOTERS put Bush into office and tht occurred twice. Thre are MANY new registreed voters , THEY can make the difference but they WILL need to get out to vote for sure which brings up the scramble of GOPs now rolling across the land QUESTIONING and NOW CAGING new registrations regarding their VALIDITY and eligibility TO VOTE. NOT just in Florida, but in OPhio, Va , Pa and elewhere....MORE NEED TO BE PAYING ATTENTION for the MANIPULATIONS are already being put in practice but little mentioned or noted or realized .THE TRUE MAJORITY WANT CHANGE and are NOT favoring McC/Palin but that same true majority were ignorred in the past and can be ignorred and overrun again if folks do NOT demand different.

The reason that the Republican party's right wing base loves Palin is because she is one of them. She is a hard core ultraconservative far outside of the center of public opinion. But while this mobilizes the base, if the Democrats play this correctly it can be used to alienate the voters at the center, who will decide the election. Going after Palin is not something for Obama himslelf to do. It must be done by surrogates, especially prominent Democratic women. IF Hillary is willing to do this (something which is not at all clear) she should play a prominent role in this. Feminist organizations must go after her for her rigit anti-choice stand, even in the case of rape and incest. Environmental organization must go after her because of her anti-environmental record, etc.
