NEW YORK — If there were any doubts that the sidekick was stealing the show, they were put to rest when Sarah Palin took off for Alaska with a wave from the tarmac by John McCain.

His crowds suddenly dwindled. The exuberant cheering heard day after day during two weeks of joint appearances went away. And the Republican presidential candidate's schedule began to resemble the lightness of May instead of the full throttle of September.

Meantime, Palin's campaign plane taking her home to Alaska was so crowded it had to let off some cargo to get the weight down.

This was a striking week to see the contrast between McCain and Palin together and the dimmed wattage around the nominee when they are apart. They are expected to reunite early next week.

With her, McCain scored the largest crowd of his presidential campaign. An estimated 23,000 people crammed a park in the Washington suburb of Fairfax, Va., on a weekday morning.

Music blared and people roared as the Arizona senator and his high-energy running mate took the stage. "I am so grateful for this turnout," McCain enthused. Aides grinned ear-to-ear. The crowd shouted "Sarah, Sarah" and women who showed up said they were excited to learn about her life and accomplishments.

Without Palin later in the day, McCain went to a diner in Philadelphia.

He held a discussion on economic woes there with half a dozen businesswomen. A large crowd backing Democratic rival Barack Obama gathered in the indoor marketplace where the Down Home Diner is located, and yelled "Obama, Obama" so loudly that McCain and his guests at times had to lean far over the table to hear each other speak.

McCain's remarks to reporters afterward were similarly drowned out. "Pennsylvania is a battleground state, as we can tell," he said with barely contained fury. Aides' faces fell.

Palin's arrival in Alaska, her first step away from McCain, only continued her streak of large, wildly excited crowds. The Alaska governor was greeted at the airport by about 2,000 people who nearly choked her up with their happy welcome. High-level McCain aides went with her to help her prepare for her first big interview.

"She's on a wild ride," Obama told David Letterman, conceding she's the phenomenon of the moment. The Democrat cracked: "As somebody who used to be on the cover of Time and Newsweek _ those were the days _ I had a recent offer with Popular Mechanics: centerfold with a wrench."

The lesson from all of this isn't lost on McCain. Campaigns usually split up their presidential and vice presidential candidates so the ticket can cover more ground, which is what Obama and his running mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, are doing. This could be especially important because the late conventions shortened the general-election season.

But the McCain camp has calculated it needs to put him back with his No. 2, and probably keep them together for much of the fall campaign.

Until they are back together, McCain has no rallies and not much going on.

On Friday, McCain only had two public appointments, both aimed at female voters: interviews with his wife Cindy on "The View" and "The Rachael Ray Show."

He planned to stay behind closed doors Saturday at his campaign headquarters, then travel Sunday to a NASCAR race in New Hampshire, which provides a built-in, pumped-up crowd the campaign does not have to generate itself. Then it's on to Florida for a fundraiser.

Palin, meantime, is headlining her own rallies in Anchorage and Carson City, Nev., on Saturday before flying to Colorado.

She's proved adept at electrifying core Republicans and intriguing many independents, even as scrutiny of her record intensifies and Democrats label her a lightweight.

Aides have sheltered her from spontaneous exchanges with voters and kept a tight lid on press access, leaving little doubt that they worry about how she will do in any setting that is not highly orchestrated. She stumbled over foreign policy in her ABC News interview despite careful preparation.

Still, on the stage, the understudy is upstaging the lead actor. That can be hard on a star's ego but McCain is not complaining. There are worse problems for a presidential campaign to have.

Most of this great gain in the polls has to be corporate and media driven as surely that many Americans can be that stupid. Remember the U.S. mainstream medias were cheerleaders for the Iraq invasion and kept the truth under wraps.

People from other countries had their news medias reporting the truth and that is why no one supported the invasion other than a few subserviants to Bush and of course his pet poodle Tony Blair but having said that the British people were against it which ultimately led to Blair having to resign.

With the U.S. news medias reporting on this election and portraying such high support for McCain has virtually made America the laughing stock of the world and many now consider Americans as backward and with less than average intelligence.

Another week with Palin, and McCain will be the sidekick. Standing behind Palin, with that dumb grin on his face, laughing, clapping, and dancing, while she does all the talking, makes him look a little "dimwitted". Sort of like an old Walter Brennan character. I bet Walt would be proud!

Who wants to see an old has-been tell his war stories? And that is all he has to talk about. I am surprised he let her out of his sight, since she is the only thing in his campaign that has "changed."

At least he has something to actually talk about unlike Obama. I won't be surprised if Obama starts doing magic tricks during the debates which I'm sure would draw a lot of OOOOHS and AWWWS from the crowd like he does during his prophetic speeches (most of which is stolen from others)

McCain graduated from military school at the bottom of his class of 800 and it shows. We need leadership that is intelligent and inspirational. McCain puts people to sleep so whatever he may have to say is lost anyway and he is clearly not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Then add George Bush in drag, Pork Barrel Palin, and you really have a recipe for disaster. Her personality is so much like Bush. Never thinks she is wrong. If you disagree with her you are attacked. And since they can't admit to their mistakes, even behind close doors due to their huge egos, they continue along distructive paths like the Bush/Cheney Iraq war.

What does McCain have to talk about besides his POW story and what he used to be as a Senator before he became who he is as a candidate for president? Obviously, HE must think Obama has plenty to talk about since he's stolen virtually everything he can from Obama's campaign, even as Bush has stolen every foreign policy proposal Obama has promoted, which McCain now supports - not when Obama says it, but only when Bush says it! McCain and the Republicans have essentially attempted steal as much from Senator Obama as they could without becoming Senator Obama, and I'm sure they will not stop at trying to steal the election from him as well. Maybe if you actually listen to Senator Obama as well as they apparently have, you'll hear what they've heard, which is a lot more than we can ever hope to hear from Senator McCain!

Where does Mccain stand unemployement raising?
The poorest American who can fend for themselves Children?
How will he propose that children with voucher get to school of there is not publis transit?
How will Mccain re-toll Michigan?

See I'm not crazy no one has heard these issues from Mccain.

The negative comments are coming from the nadar party, republican party, green party, and the PUMA party. Those are the only people that have a major vest interest in keeping these united states divided. They are able to make money off the tax payer running for office.

If these 3rd party did care about American they would not be free loader of the taxpayer. They did not vote in the senate or the house to earned the money. They don't have any kind show me the proof the accomplished anything on behalf of the American people. the system say they can run and they take advantage of the dumb American that need to get that law changed. The 3rd party should have to work their way up the ranks to show they have earned a record. No record they should not receive tax dollars they have not earned.

These same people will demand Obama provide details of his plan yet be willing to vote against for a 3rd party without proof on the other end what have they done to earn that vote to that president position.

Eight years of seeing my 401K retirement money being eaten away is more than enough.

Thank goodness social security has not become private, the stock market dropped so many time this years the most people have made on their retirement has been less than what the banks (the few still left )pay.

Whenever American hear the word private from republicans, always remember, government can not operate on your tax dollars for profit. However, when those position are transfer to private the company is paid by the taxpayer but more because the owner of that company works for profit, the government is paying top dollar, we could have gotten cheaper with a local or federal government employee. America you have been duped

I can't help but wonder if all of these Palin enthusiasts are supporting her because of her biology and not her ideology. I have yet to read a coherent, comprehensive and compelling argument from any of her supporters as to why she would make a good VP. Being a women is not a good enough argument...that's just anatomy. I'm a woman in my 40's, but that does not mean I am qualified to be VP.

During the primaries, Senator McCain stated that neither Giuliani's experience as Mayor nor Romney's experience as Governor qualified either to be President. So, why is it that Palin's experience as Mayor and Governor qualify her?

To be honest, her "experience" is not what I'm concerned about. Judgment and stance on the issues is what is important to me. In my view, it's "experienced" politicians that have deteriorated our economy, engaged us in a war many American's disagree with, lowered our standing worldwide, etc. etc. etc.

If people are supporting Palin because they believe in her ideals and feel she will bring good judgment to the White House, I respect their decision. If they are supporting her solely because she is a woman, than God help us all.

Palin wanted to know what would be the proper procedure to follow if someone came in and wanted a book banned. It would be very important to know the proper procedure. As mayor, she was doing her job. No one ever came in and asked for a ban and she never asked to ban any book. Case closed.

Her own words on ABC tonight. I don't think the Librarion is saying any different. Where is your proof that she did try to ban books?

No one asks about the possibility of removing books from a library if that is not their intention... No? Oh... Thanks... Just wondering... Wouldn't want anyone doing any censoring on my watch as mayor... Oh and (a few weeks later) by the way you're fired.

Yuh, right - even a third grader knows we don't ban books in America - she didn't need advice on what to do - zeesch!

Interestingly, the librarian who gave Mrs. Palin the information any third grader would know was fired.

Guess it is case closed, though - another neocon kept from their craven quest to corrupt the principles of Democracy!
