Honorbig

***UPDATED BELOW***

For some Democratic observers, it's been one of the most intensely debated questions of the general election campaign. Can you campaign against the honor of a former POW?

Increasingly, it looks as though Barack Obama's campaign feels as though they have little choice. In response to last week's ad accusing the Illinois Democrat of supporting explicit sex-ed for kindergarten students, an Obama spokesperson called McCain's campaign "perverse."

Now, after McCain himself defended the ad on "The View" Friday morning, the Obama camp is raising the honor question again.

"Today on "The View," John McCain defended his campaign's latest ad campaign, which has been debunked repeatedly as both false and sleazy. In running the sleaziest campaign since South Carolina in 2000 and standing by completely debunked lies on national television, it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election."

The last line, of course, is a play off of McCain's own controversial formulation, in which accused Barack Obama of being willing to lose the war in Iraq in order to prevail in a political campaign. It was also repeated in another Obama campaign email issued to reporters later on Friday, making it something of a new, unofficial slogan. (See update below.)

Obama's team also provided reporters with a myriad of independent criticisms of McCain's sex ad.

From The New York Times:

"The most disheartening aspect of a scurrilous Republican ad falsely accusing Barack Obama of promoting sex education for kindergarten children is its closing line: 'I'm John McCain, and I approved this message.' This from that straight-talker of yore, who fervidly denounced the 2004 Bush campaign's Swift Boat character attacks on John Kerry's military record." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

"The kindergarten ad flat-out lies." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

[The] accusations... seriously distort the record. ... In referring to the sex-education bill, the McCain campaign is largely recycling old and discredited accusations..." [9/11/08]

Time Magazine:

[McCain] "is responsible for one of the sleaziest ads I've ever seen in presidential politics, so sleazy that I won't abet its spread by linking to it...." [Joe Klein, 9/10/08]

"A different category of dumb charge." [Ana Marie Cox, 9/10/08]

Annenberg Political Fact Check:
"The claim is simply false..." [FactCheck.org, 9/10/08]

The Chicago Sun-Times:
"McCain echoed a sexy--but misleading-- line of attack made last year by Mitt Romney..." [9/10/08]

McClatchy:
"This is a deliberately misleading accusation." [9/9/08]

The Atlantic:
"The gap between the implication (Obama has liberal, radical views about sexuality) and the reality in this ad is pretty big and fairly consequential." [Marc Ambinder, 9/9/08]

UPDATE: In response to another McCain ad, titled "Change or more of the same," the Obama campaign sent out another strongly worded response raising the issue of McCain's integrity in conducting his campaign messaging.

"The McCain campaign's lies make it clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose this election. The fact is, John McCain has voted for millions in earmarks and his running mate has requested more pork per person than any governor in America -- including $2 million to study the mating patterns of crabs. Barack Obama has stood up to the lobbyists and corruption in Washington, and will bring real change that puts middle-class families first," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

John McCain LIE repeat of Bush. And the way McCain is handling his campaign is the same way he will run the White House. Full of LIES. And McCain shoud he win the election will lead the US into another war based on LIES the same as Bush. Using the same people that got us into the IRAQ war, Karl Rove, Cheney, Condi Rice, Rumsfield, all of them. Bush is not going anywhere, Cheney is not going any where, Condi Rice is not going anywhere and Karl Rove is running John McCain campaign, so of course he will be right there in the White House calling the shots. John McCain will steal this election the same way Bush did and will get away with it. It's a repeat. Why? Because the Democratics will sit on the side line and complain about it.

Your canidate Obama has had two years to explain his positions and plans. Nothing for 19 months. Now all of a sudden he's Mr. Issues. Please. I have a great idea. Lets have a canidates forum at Obama's alma mater and discuss hmmmmm.... oh, yeah community service. What a shocker. And we'll keep the canidates separated so Mr. Obama won't have to explain where all the $$ is going to come from for his umpteen million service organizations. In a sick way I want Obama to win. Just to see him tax us to death..then the rich democrats can smile about improving the world while remaining rich and the the rest can sit in their 1 room apartment figuring out ways to blame the republicans for a country full of community service orgs. and no paying jobs. I'll see ya at the welfare office.

I'm glad to hear that you want Obama to win.
Don't forget to vote Obama/Biden on November 4th.
Have a Great Day

Yes, please vote Obama then see if President Obama "taxes us to death". For people like you, Obama needs an ad to spell out what is the tax savings for most people. You ignore the truth at your own risk.

Hummmm let's balance this... Which McCain would you be voting for? Pre-2000 or 2008 version? Palin... has been vetted for what almost 3 weeks?

Talk about courage Bidden is being attacked by his Church because he won't impose his religious beliefs on America.

Palin thinks she's so special that Jesus is going to return during her life time.... now that's a megalomaniac.

Excellent article on the McCain Lies. Keep it up.

Also, there is another article on the religious fanatics at MS. Palin's church. It is one thing to believe in God. It is another thing to tell people that they have to join your church. Has MS Palin's congregation forgot that our Constitution supports freedom of Religion?

At least McCain has integrity to lose. What's Obama's currency?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:22 AM on 09/14/2008

Please. McCain left behind integrity when he left behind his first wife.

You can't demonstrate Obama lacks integrity.

John McCain shows us evey day that his is long gone, if it was ever there.

Agree! Always smearing Obama without proofs while McCain chased women his daughter's age. He has a pattern here: left his ex-model wife because she had permanent injury from a car accident. He chase Cindy and her fortune helped his career. Now, he had a lacklustre campaign so he chose Sarah who helped energizing it. Unfortunately his lust for her is no good for his country.

No joke. O's camp attacked Palin as a mother. To me, that's as low as you can get. This truly is the pot calling the kettle black (and I don't mean that in a r@cial way before everyone gets going on r@cism yet again.)

Hey, you make a decent point! Obama really can't take credit for much, compared to John McCain who has a lot he can claim responsibility for. Let's count them together, shall we... OK, here we go:
Here's a list of things McCain can take credit for that Obama doesn't have a shred of experience in. (Obama's inexperience really takes is UNDENIABLE here.)
John McCain cheated on his wife. In fact so many times everyone's lost count including John McCain. Obama has no experience in adultery at all. John McCain was such a negligent husband that he helped accelerate his wife's crumbling emotional state resulting in drug addiction, and was too "divorced from everyday struggles" that he didn't even see her lucrative criminal activity and scandalous behavior within her own charity. Michelle: clean, sober, balanced, and no criminal record. Johnny boy's got him beat again. John McCain knows what it's like to testify before the entire nation/world about his criminal involvement within a financial scandal (Keating 5). Again, Obama, no experience here. Total score: McCain 3 - Obama 0. I'd have to say ADVANTAGE MCCAIN.

He gave up his integrity when Bush using the Rove tactics beat him. So we have a angry old man and a vindictive VP as his side kick.

Flip Flopper John and his pit bull side kick. They really should be auditioning for a cartoon series.

The Obama campaign, the DNC and democratic 527s need to plaster the airwaves (Broadcast TV, Radio, Cable and Dish) with attack ads. This is war, let's start fighting it!!!!!

Ignore Palin, McCain attack ads, voter registration and voter turnout are the only things that are going to win this election and save the country.

Seriously though, does anyone see a parallel here? Check this out:
She was for the situation (Bridge to Nowhere) before she knew much about it. Once she realized that it had produced a professional blemish (lack of integrity) and was not consistant with the image she wanted to present (wholesome, honest aware and in control), she condemned the process, but kept the results (the money).
She was for the situation (Bristol and Lev's relationship) before she knew much about it. Once she realized that it had produced a professional blemish (teenage daughter pregnant) and was not consistant with the image she wanted to present, (wholesome, honest aware and in control), she condemned the process, but kept the results (the baby).
I guess it's Cindy's turn to say "I needed John to be 72, but he wanted to be 45..."

McCain has no integrity. He sold his soul to the NeoCons, wanting to win the Presidency at any price. This guy is a bottom feeder. I laught when they say "honorable POW." He would sell his mother downstream for this position. McCain has been bought and paid for all his life. Personally and Politically.

McCain served in the U. S. Navy, was shot down, became a POW and now an American Hero. Here is what I do not understand..When did we start teaching our kids that it is okay to enter The Military Academy and FAIL. Waste your time drinking and partying and the conclusion is you will enter the military, continue the bad habits and eventually or possibly go off to war unprepared. You're unprepared because you decided NOT to take it seriously enough to learn skills to protect yourself and your country should you be called to war. Go unprepared and unskilled, get shot down and become an American HERO. Well he is NOT MY HERO. My father served in the same war, did not get shot down and did not risk his life or the life of the country due to his lack of proper training. He came home honorably, stayed with the wife that waited for him, unfortunately he developed Agent Orange and Lung Cancer from serving in this same War. Should he tell his story and dare anyone to challenge whether he is a HERO? When did making errors and using bad judgment like partying and wasting time in lieu of learning how to be a fighter pilot earn you honors to be a HERO? Hero's are those that died for us on Flight 93 on Sept 11th !! We are twisted in our perception of a hero. McCain may be your hero but he surely isn't mine!

Steve Schmidt! Steve Schmidt! Steve Schmidt!

This is the guy slinging the muck. He makes the Watergate dirty tricksters look like Cub Scouts.

He's mean, ruthless and cares only about winning. His last quote when he took over was,"no more nice Steve." Well, there never has been a nice Steve.

Beware, he's sunk his fangs into John McCain and sucked all the honor out.
