Honorbig

***UPDATED BELOW***

For some Democratic observers, it's been one of the most intensely debated questions of the general election campaign. Can you campaign against the honor of a former POW?

Increasingly, it looks as though Barack Obama's campaign feels as though they have little choice. In response to last week's ad accusing the Illinois Democrat of supporting explicit sex-ed for kindergarten students, an Obama spokesperson called McCain's campaign "perverse."

Now, after McCain himself defended the ad on "The View" Friday morning, the Obama camp is raising the honor question again.

"Today on "The View," John McCain defended his campaign's latest ad campaign, which has been debunked repeatedly as both false and sleazy. In running the sleaziest campaign since South Carolina in 2000 and standing by completely debunked lies on national television, it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election."

The last line, of course, is a play off of McCain's own controversial formulation, in which accused Barack Obama of being willing to lose the war in Iraq in order to prevail in a political campaign. It was also repeated in another Obama campaign email issued to reporters later on Friday, making it something of a new, unofficial slogan. (See update below.)

Obama's team also provided reporters with a myriad of independent criticisms of McCain's sex ad.

From The New York Times:

"The most disheartening aspect of a scurrilous Republican ad falsely accusing Barack Obama of promoting sex education for kindergarten children is its closing line: 'I'm John McCain, and I approved this message.' This from that straight-talker of yore, who fervidly denounced the 2004 Bush campaign's Swift Boat character attacks on John Kerry's military record." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

"The kindergarten ad flat-out lies." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

[The] accusations... seriously distort the record. ... In referring to the sex-education bill, the McCain campaign is largely recycling old and discredited accusations..." [9/11/08]

Time Magazine:

[McCain] "is responsible for one of the sleaziest ads I've ever seen in presidential politics, so sleazy that I won't abet its spread by linking to it...." [Joe Klein, 9/10/08]

"A different category of dumb charge." [Ana Marie Cox, 9/10/08]

Annenberg Political Fact Check:
"The claim is simply false..." [FactCheck.org, 9/10/08]

The Chicago Sun-Times:
"McCain echoed a sexy--but misleading-- line of attack made last year by Mitt Romney..." [9/10/08]

McClatchy:
"This is a deliberately misleading accusation." [9/9/08]

The Atlantic:
"The gap between the implication (Obama has liberal, radical views about sexuality) and the reality in this ad is pretty big and fairly consequential." [Marc Ambinder, 9/9/08]

UPDATE: In response to another McCain ad, titled "Change or more of the same," the Obama campaign sent out another strongly worded response raising the issue of McCain's integrity in conducting his campaign messaging.

"The McCain campaign's lies make it clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose this election. The fact is, John McCain has voted for millions in earmarks and his running mate has requested more pork per person than any governor in America -- including $2 million to study the mating patterns of crabs. Barack Obama has stood up to the lobbyists and corruption in Washington, and will bring real change that puts middle-class families first," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Forget the mudslinging get down to facts.
Both sides need to state unequivocally what they intend to do and how they intend to accomplish it.
Then we can contrast the two and see what makes both sides wrong.
If a politician can't stand the heat they don't deserve the office.

McCain blames the tone of the campaign on Obama's refusal to have town hall meetings with him...

Sounds like a blackmail strategy: "If you don't do what I want, I'll destroy you" - or like something a 5 year-old would do.

Grow up, John Boy. You should be deeply ashamed of what you've become.

Speaking of integrity, maybe Obama should explain how it was that convicted felon and bag-man for the Nation of Islam, Tony Rezko, paid for the lot adjacent to Obama's house after Obama fiunneled $14M of taxpayer's money to him to fix slum tenements that never got fixed.

Maybe McCain can explain this " Big-Time Gangsters Set Up McCain’s Family Fortune
Bronfman family behind the organized crime empire in Arizona that spawned the political career of John McCain"

McCain's campain is full of lies and is very negative. His excuse is that Obama would not have town hall meetings with him. McCain has said more than once if Obama had agreed to Town Hall meetings the campaign would not have taken this negative tone. Well who knows, but given the lies and distortions he has used how could we believe that lie. By conducting a campaign of lies, distortions, and negative attacks he has tarnished the image of an American Hero -- himself. I wonder if this truly honors his fellow prisoners?

That's because the only way McBush could have gotten any media attention would be if Obama were at the same place. It's evident by his pick of Palin, the crowd pull she has when she's with him and the lack of large crowds now that she's in Alaska. Must be great to lose your integrity, your principles and your honor in order to have your #2 pick generate the excitement from your base that you can't hope to get. As I've said before, if I were McBush I'd be concerned that someone on my
own side might b u m p m e o f f so that Pallin could step in.

Obama / Biden = Road to the FUTURE

McBush / Slick Sarah = Bridge to NOWHERE

The logic of McCain's statement is summed up in "If Obama won't do what I want him to do, I have every right to lie about him." Lame, to say the least.

Just proves that someone who cheats on his crippled wife, allows lobbyists to run his campaign, and helped the Keating Five isn't an honorable person.

Gosh, did I say that?

The fact that there are people trolling the internet defending these two tells me that there are a lot of people who learned nothing in the past eight years. It was an amazing thing to me that W was elected the second time. He was so obviously out of his depth in the presidency. Now we have trolling neocons defending this pair as if either McCain or Palin had a clue how to get this country back on the right track.

If they did, I bet they'd be talking about those ideas, rather than POWism and selling state planes.

The first paragraph of this post reveals the basic misunderstanding that has kept Democrats out of the presidency so many times: "For some Democratic observers, it's been one of the most intensely debated questions of the general election campaign. Can you campaign against the honor of a former POW?" The first law of Republican campaigning, as stated by the genuinely brilliant Karl Rove: Attack your opponent's strengths, not his weaknesses. Democrats are still learning this basic psychological and political truth. Once they learn it they can be as effective politicians as the Republicans. If they do not learn it, they are doomed to being seen as weak, cowardly, un-presidential, and poor communicators.

I think pretty much, everyone is getting tired of hearing about his POW status! McCain is not the only POW and McCain is not the only person that has served his country! I'm personally sick of hearing about it and he is using it like he is using Palin! McCain is a a user, a dishonorable man and a liar! MCCAIN DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE PRESIDENT!

OR

"Sex Education for Kindergartners"

What is better?

IMHO, Sex education for kindergartners might have prevented at least one unwanted pregnancy in the Palin Family.

With his VP selection, McCain has obviously risked the security of the nation to win an election. No honor in that. With his campaign of attack and lie, he has demonstrated no real interest in the issues that impact average famlies etc. No honor in that. With his positions on issues being so out of touch with the challenges we face but loyal to the failed policies of the past eight years, he has demonstrated he is willing to risk our future to protect the status quo. No honor in that. With his tendency to shoot from the hip and to ignore the facts, he is dangerously impuslive and ill informed. No honor in that. When all else fails, he plays the POW card to distract the media and the public and silence all who disagree with him. No honor in that. If one has no honor, its not an attack. Its the simple truth.

Barack Obama NEEDS to put that in an ad against McCain. Start hitting his "honor" and "integrity". After all, McCain has been getting away with this bullsh*t for his entire career. So, he was a POW? There are millions of people in this country that live more honorable lives with integrity than he displays. I think the POW instance in his life, was knocked out with the Keating 5 scandal. McCain was MORE guilty than all the rest, yet he skated with a slap on the wrist. He GAVE THE NAMES of this co-conspirators to the news media and when they didn't report their names quickly enough, he called up the reporters and chastised them for it! No wonder his collegues do NOT TRUST HIM!!

Ask the thousands of people who lost their life savings and their pensions in the Keating 5 scandal, what they think of John McCain's "honor" and "integrity".

What honor? What integrity? What character? John McCain threw that out the window when he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. Rather than being his own man and picking whom he wanted, he caved in to the neocons/Jesus freaks and selected Palin. He had a wealth of well-qualified Republican women he could have picked, but he spurned them for the less-qualified beauty queen. How sexist. How typical.

Country first? Please. Politics first, and if the country happens to end up in the hands of someone whose knowledge or American and foreign affairs stops at the Alaska border, oh well, too bad for America. Barack Obama, in picking Joe Biden, made sure America would be well taken care of if something happened to him. John McCain does not care about the welfare and security of this country anymore. He is not the brave POW anymore. He is the ultimate sell-out.

The Palin choice is the single most insulting thing that McCain has done in his entire career. As a voter who has been voting since the sixties, it's obvious i'm no kid. I've seen lots of candidates in that time. Some seemed very qualified, even though I didn't like them personally, like Bob Dole. Others seemed like idiotic choices, and I was right...like Dan Quayle. None comes close to this.

John McCain could have gone out into the streets and picked the first person he ran across and I doubt that person would have been less qualified. All his choice tells me is that John McCain Does Not Love America.
