Honorbig

***UPDATED BELOW***

For some Democratic observers, it's been one of the most intensely debated questions of the general election campaign. Can you campaign against the honor of a former POW?

Increasingly, it looks as though Barack Obama's campaign feels as though they have little choice. In response to last week's ad accusing the Illinois Democrat of supporting explicit sex-ed for kindergarten students, an Obama spokesperson called McCain's campaign "perverse."

Now, after McCain himself defended the ad on "The View" Friday morning, the Obama camp is raising the honor question again.

"Today on "The View," John McCain defended his campaign's latest ad campaign, which has been debunked repeatedly as both false and sleazy. In running the sleaziest campaign since South Carolina in 2000 and standing by completely debunked lies on national television, it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election."

The last line, of course, is a play off of McCain's own controversial formulation, in which accused Barack Obama of being willing to lose the war in Iraq in order to prevail in a political campaign. It was also repeated in another Obama campaign email issued to reporters later on Friday, making it something of a new, unofficial slogan. (See update below.)

Obama's team also provided reporters with a myriad of independent criticisms of McCain's sex ad.

From The New York Times:

"The most disheartening aspect of a scurrilous Republican ad falsely accusing Barack Obama of promoting sex education for kindergarten children is its closing line: 'I'm John McCain, and I approved this message.' This from that straight-talker of yore, who fervidly denounced the 2004 Bush campaign's Swift Boat character attacks on John Kerry's military record." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

"The kindergarten ad flat-out lies." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

[The] accusations... seriously distort the record. ... In referring to the sex-education bill, the McCain campaign is largely recycling old and discredited accusations..." [9/11/08]

Time Magazine:

[McCain] "is responsible for one of the sleaziest ads I've ever seen in presidential politics, so sleazy that I won't abet its spread by linking to it...." [Joe Klein, 9/10/08]

"A different category of dumb charge." [Ana Marie Cox, 9/10/08]

Annenberg Political Fact Check:
"The claim is simply false..." [FactCheck.org, 9/10/08]

The Chicago Sun-Times:
"McCain echoed a sexy--but misleading-- line of attack made last year by Mitt Romney..." [9/10/08]

McClatchy:
"This is a deliberately misleading accusation." [9/9/08]

The Atlantic:
"The gap between the implication (Obama has liberal, radical views about sexuality) and the reality in this ad is pretty big and fairly consequential." [Marc Ambinder, 9/9/08]

UPDATE: In response to another McCain ad, titled "Change or more of the same," the Obama campaign sent out another strongly worded response raising the issue of McCain's integrity in conducting his campaign messaging.

"The McCain campaign's lies make it clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose this election. The fact is, John McCain has voted for millions in earmarks and his running mate has requested more pork per person than any governor in America -- including $2 million to study the mating patterns of crabs. Barack Obama has stood up to the lobbyists and corruption in Washington, and will bring real change that puts middle-class families first," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Tom Watson said this several months ago about Obama: "...his campaign's chilling acceptance of the gender bias stirred by our national media will also remind many of Ronald Reagan's acceptance of the race-baiting southern strategy..."

And, I can tell you that this ad is another southern strategy adopted by the GOP. You think the McCain camp didn't know what kind of emotions that ad would stir up? An African American male and their (mostly white) children. and some twisted thinking by the right wing and what a perfect set up for an ad that is a lie.

John McCain constantly talks about honor and integrity. If he ever had it, he left it in one of his houses and forgot which one it was!

He is about the sleaziest old man I have ever seen in politics. At least Bush let others do his dirty work, McCain will lie to peoples face and then repeat the lie, as to spread the propaganda according to Bush, you have to keep repeating and repeating to spread the propaganda. The lies, the distortions, it's pathetic what a once supposedly honorable man has become.

Please read this article. We must find ways to donate funds to supply voters with the Photo ID's needed to vote in these states. This should not be about Red or Blue, but the RED WHITE, AND BLUE. If we don't stand up as a country to protect the little guy, then we have failed as a society. Please contract your local voter agency to find out what you can do to help or start making you local communities aware of this agenda.

The answer is simple. If Republicans insist on implementing this strategy, then a movement to require all states to provide photo voter registration/ID cards is the only acceptable solution. So guys, when do we start?

Contact your local DNC office and offer to help. They are aware of the problem. They along with each town's Obama for America office(s) have been working hard to mobilize people every day. So if you have any free time... even just a few hours here or there, please go sign up. I've been working since January and believe me,... we just need to get the bodies in the door. We can always use the help

John McCain's defense of the sex ad against Obama goes to show, after all, this guy is not what he professes to be. He has no integrity whatsoever. Nana!

McBush once boasted that he would rather lose an election than win a war. The truth is he will do and say anything to win an election. That's how phoney he is!! Obama must tear down this wall of hypocricy that surrounds McCain. He must expound the truth to the American people that McCain is not more of the same but the WORST OF THE SAME!

Forget about Palin. She is the trump card the Republicans are using to divert Obama away from speaking about the real issues. By the Palin distraction, they hope to derail Obama from his message.

Palin is just a passing cloud. The cosmetics on her already started to peel off, thanks to Gibson's interview. When Hillary and others go after her, she will become history!

Obama must stay on track with his message and open his attack on McCain on full throttle. Forget about professor-type nicety. It doesn't work in politics. The Karl Rove gang will, ofcourse, throw mud at you, by mocking that you have given up your crusade to bring change the way Washington is run. Change can come only when you are in the White House. So first things first: Win the election. That's the priority. Change and Hope will follow!!

If anyone has any doubts that McCain/Palin will be a continuation of the last 8 years, just look at who is running their campaign! Karl Rove (Bush's brain) et al, are at it again. They are very smart, but have no integrity. McCain is allowing himself to be manipulated, and you can bet that the "Maverick" will not have the strength to stand up to them once in the White House. He already looks tired and whipped. Some pundits are saying a McCain administration would be worse than this Bush administration. We're all being duped, and our country and its citizens are at stake. The rest of the world sees it from the outside. Why are we too blind to see it from within? Read the books by George Orwell (1984 and Animal Farm). This is sounding way too familiar.

We see it. Believe me. And so do the Republicans. It is a sad time in our history when the election of a president for our country has truly deteriorated to being about party pride. They all know that John McCain is not leadership material so they use his longevity in politics as his proof of ability and call it experience. Give me a break. We were twice duped. I don't believe the American public wants to see this country continue to suffer. I believe we will have change and it certainly won't be an experienced Senator who finds sick humor in perversely attacking his opponent while ignoring all the serious issues facing this country. The Republicans need to get some of that compassion Bush used to talk about and take a good long look at where we are in terms of the economy and other problems. They need to try to care. And if they can find it in their heart, they will do the right thing and elect Obama who will dedicate his time to rebuilding and strengthening this country while working across party lines.

They see it alright. And they are SO SMUG and so COMPLACENT, that they even go on the tube and SMUGLY AND COMPLACENTLY call 'VOTER FRAUD' a way to cancel democracy.
They also WARN US (and I BELIEVE WE NEED TO HEED IT) NOT TO KEEP MAKING PALIN a JOKE. My advice? SHUT UP ABOUT PALIN! SHUT UP ABOUT HER INTELLIGENCE, HER FAMILY, HER LOOKS. TALK AND SHOUT ABOUT HER RUNNING MATE AND HIS POLICIES. TALK AND SHOUT ABOUT HOW SHE FITS NICELY INTO THE "PLAN". But PLEASE-FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR COUNTRY,STOP THE B.S.! It gives the MEDIA something to feed on, but it also CANCELS EVERY LEGITIMATE STORY ABOUT OBAMA/BIDEN.

this country needs to be reminded of the cosmopolitan views of our forefathers... it wasn't about small town politics ,,, but bigger and brighter ideas...which the Republicans continue to attack.... it continues to be a paradigm shift for them and that is very hard for the right wing to understand.

When will someone stand up and say the obvious, McCain is hot for Palin. The man referred to her as his soul mate, and he looks like a teenager in heat standing next to her. She can say or claim anything and he is blinded by his emotions and will believe everything she says....

We are "drinking the pub kool-aid" folks.....palin needs to fade to the background and FADE now.

Here's what comes to mind when I think of the Republicans:

1. Dick Cheney's reply to an ABC reporter who said "in regards to Iraq, two-thirds of Americans feel it is not worth fighting". Cheney's cut her off with a one word answer - "So".

2. The day after Katrina, the image of GW Bush and John McCain posing with McCain's birthday cake.

3. Cheney shooting his friend while hunting.

4. McCain's repeated confusion between Shiites and Sunnis (thank God he had Lieberman to help correct him in one instance).

5. McCain thinking Iraq borders Pakistan.

6. McCain's reference to Czechoslovakia, even though it doesn't exist. It split into two countries over 15 years ago: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Ironically, McCain has met with the leaders of both countries.

7. Both John McCain and Cindy McCain stating that they would run a positive campaign.

8. George Bush's constant mangling of the english language. (Although funny at times, it is a little embarrassing sometimes).

Numbers 4,5 and 6 do concern me, for I feel that if one is running for Commander in Chief, they should know these differences and facts.

Obama needs to tell McCain what it means to have integrity and its importance in the Presidency. He should call a press conference. This is the time for Obama to lecture McCain on this topic. He should do it as a 'story'. It should go something like this. "Some of you will remember that in South Carolina in the 2000 primary, Bush 'swift boated' McCain. I've been thinking about how McCain must have felt in 2000 and at that time trying to see it though his eyes. I'm sure he felt like he just wanted to talk about the issues. That he thought that if he could just get the public's attention -- there is so much the pubic needs need to know. We can guess how McCain must have felt -- wanting and wishing for a real diolouge on the real issues and disappointed he must have been in George W. Bush. If this is a true story, I want to know what happened to that guy. What happened to McCain? What happened to his integrity?

Bush took his lack of integrity into the White House in the form of Rove and Cheney and that showed bad judgment. We should have known that you can see what kind of Presidency we'll have by the integrity with which they run their campaign. The McCain-Palin campaign will lie to the American people to get elected. What kind of integrity is that?"

"Obama needs to tell McCain what it means to have integrity and its importance in the Presidency"

Integrity like voting for FISA because it was politically smart? Integrity like having more donations from Fannie May and Freddie Mac than any other candidate. Integrity like having Lobbyist Axelrod running your campaign and an lobbyist from one of the failed home mortgage agencies on you VP selection team? Integrity is checked at the door when one runs for POTUS. No matter what party you belong to, to win you court the shakers and movers in politics, and most of them are lobbyist in Washington or heads of corporations.

I still "miss" Gen. Clark's line about the link between being a former POW and being qualified to be president. Where are all the surrogates?

General Clark was right. I thought so then and i still think so. But it is looked upon as demeanining McCain's heroism. So, everyone acts like they have to walk on eggs when it comes to the question of how does being a POW make McCain more qualified for Commander-in-chief. I still don't know how McCain thinks he has contributed more than Obama when it comes to working on issues for this country. Obama has dedicated his life since graduating from college to organizing and leading while studying to find solutions to societal problems. He has learned the lesson of empowerment and is now ready to bring change using the concept of empowerment. McCain's change won't involve empowering the citizens. It will be more of the same except, if he is elected, you better believe everyone will get one thing from him-the neverending story of his POW experience.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:50 AM on 09/13/2008

"He has learned the lesson of empowerment"

Yes, and his ambition to become POTUS is audacious considering he has been running toward that end since running for the Illinois state legislature.
