Honorbig

***UPDATED BELOW***

For some Democratic observers, it's been one of the most intensely debated questions of the general election campaign. Can you campaign against the honor of a former POW?

Increasingly, it looks as though Barack Obama's campaign feels as though they have little choice. In response to last week's ad accusing the Illinois Democrat of supporting explicit sex-ed for kindergarten students, an Obama spokesperson called McCain's campaign "perverse."

Now, after McCain himself defended the ad on "The View" Friday morning, the Obama camp is raising the honor question again.

"Today on "The View," John McCain defended his campaign's latest ad campaign, which has been debunked repeatedly as both false and sleazy. In running the sleaziest campaign since South Carolina in 2000 and standing by completely debunked lies on national television, it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election."

The last line, of course, is a play off of McCain's own controversial formulation, in which accused Barack Obama of being willing to lose the war in Iraq in order to prevail in a political campaign. It was also repeated in another Obama campaign email issued to reporters later on Friday, making it something of a new, unofficial slogan. (See update below.)

Obama's team also provided reporters with a myriad of independent criticisms of McCain's sex ad.

From The New York Times:

"The most disheartening aspect of a scurrilous Republican ad falsely accusing Barack Obama of promoting sex education for kindergarten children is its closing line: 'I'm John McCain, and I approved this message.' This from that straight-talker of yore, who fervidly denounced the 2004 Bush campaign's Swift Boat character attacks on John Kerry's military record." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

"The kindergarten ad flat-out lies." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

[The] accusations... seriously distort the record. ... In referring to the sex-education bill, the McCain campaign is largely recycling old and discredited accusations..." [9/11/08]

Time Magazine:

[McCain] "is responsible for one of the sleaziest ads I've ever seen in presidential politics, so sleazy that I won't abet its spread by linking to it...." [Joe Klein, 9/10/08]

"A different category of dumb charge." [Ana Marie Cox, 9/10/08]

Annenberg Political Fact Check:
"The claim is simply false..." [FactCheck.org, 9/10/08]

The Chicago Sun-Times:
"McCain echoed a sexy--but misleading-- line of attack made last year by Mitt Romney..." [9/10/08]

McClatchy:
"This is a deliberately misleading accusation." [9/9/08]

The Atlantic:
"The gap between the implication (Obama has liberal, radical views about sexuality) and the reality in this ad is pretty big and fairly consequential." [Marc Ambinder, 9/9/08]

UPDATE: In response to another McCain ad, titled "Change or more of the same," the Obama campaign sent out another strongly worded response raising the issue of McCain's integrity in conducting his campaign messaging.

"The McCain campaign's lies make it clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose this election. The fact is, John McCain has voted for millions in earmarks and his running mate has requested more pork per person than any governor in America -- including $2 million to study the mating patterns of crabs. Barack Obama has stood up to the lobbyists and corruption in Washington, and will bring real change that puts middle-class families first," said Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor.

Anyone who knew and admired the "old" John McCain knows this is true. At the beginning of the whole compaign I (as an independent) thought we'd be okay no matter who got in. Quickly I saw that McCain was selling his soul to the Bush/Cheney/Rove camp. He is no longer someone to be admired........ he is just another one of "them"!

Me too. Even if I disagreed with McCain on certain issues, I have always thought that McCain was a person of character and that he wouldn't stoop as low. Not any more.

I agree. I'm a Democrat, and as 2008 approached, I had high hopes of seeing my party reclaim the White House. But I also thought that, if not, at least I would hope that Mc Cain might be elected. He was a man I respected and trusted. No more. He has all too clearly sold out. It is a sad day for America.

"Selling"? I think I'd put that in the past tense. He SOLD his soul the MINUTE he got up on the stage in the first REPUBLICAN debate. EVERY one on that stage was falling ALL OVER themselves to 'prove' how much they supported Bush/Cheney and the rest of that bunch. McCAIN WON!
Here's the problem with McCain. He can't associate himself with a President who has a popularity rating that's in the toilet. So he has to strike out on his own. Every thing original that has come out of his mouth has been a disaster. He can't be seen in public with an unpopular Republican-and there are too many to count-beginning with the PRESIDENT. Soo-he looks around for a POPULAR Republican-BINGO! Governor of Alaska with 80% popularity rating! "QUICK -Put her on the ticket before we all die of BOREDOM!" McCain TRIES-but not hard-to get GOOD OLD JOE LIEBERMAN on the ticket, because THAT way he could APPEAR to be BIPARTISAN! "NAW! YA GOTTA KEEP THEM AWAKE!" BINGO! Governor of ALASKA it is! And NOW-He's becoming the seller-SHE's the product and they are together-the NEW IMPROVED BUSH/CHENEY!! If you Liked Bush/Cheney and what they have done to the country, you're gonna LOVE McCain/Palin and the kinda, sorta, maybe, possible change that they bring!

It's always "consequential" when one of our "leaders" lies to us.

We see the penalty for lies, in the opinion the world now holds of America, after we lied our way into the war with Iraq. Lying to us is a very small part of the offense the current Republican Putch has committed.

Will we have to wait for seven MORE years, before the media wakes up enough to call a silk purse the sow's ear it really is? Oh, and have I just committed sexism, somehow, or maybe even racism, by using that common rhetorical comparison?

How dare the Republicans try to use Political Correctness as a cover now, when they've railed against it as a scourge, that obstructs saying what you mean.

"John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose this election."

LOVE THAT LINE, Obama camp!!! Keep repeating this one over and over again! CONDEMN each and every lie being told and ANYONE who "approves this message"!

And please, NO MORE "John McCain is a hero and an honorable guy" statements! It wasn't exactly true forty years ago (ask his wife!), and it certainly isn't true about the John McCain of today!

Just now heard David Gergen (CNN) saying that, "Today, the Obama campaign said something---the words above--- that went "way over the line"! He put that statement in the same class as McCain's comments that Obama "would rather lose the war than lose the election"!

Problem is: the Obama campaign statement is TRUE; McCain's statement is FALSE! Just amazing how lacking in intellectual honesty these so-called expert commentators are! Their mouths are working, but their brains are not!

I agree with duridlady... enough already, Obama, about praising our enemy McBush as any kind of hero or anything else... he's a creep and deserves NO decent recognition of any kind. Maybe if we pretend McSame & Smudged Lips weren't even here...they'd disappear off the face of the earth. One can only hope!! Our only salvation is that they both fall in a crack somewhere for good. Either that or "their" God swoops 'em up and says, "So much for you two wasted lives."

the time for change is here--the inevitability of change will take place-we must be prepared by an America of ideas,An America of humaneness and an America of equality for all Americans-Obama can be the true agent of change with all of our help--it is not a one person job and it is not a a job for one party--we can be what we say we are by being what what we know we can and should become!!!

Should it be considered the right wings last bastion of hopeful victory?

The ReThuglicans have already started the process, a Michigan ReThug official has pulled a record of all the foreclosed homes in the state and he plans to use those records against the African American voters that come to their precinct to vote. This creep was overheard at lunch plotting this, I tell you; the evilness disguised as ReThuglican conservatism, has nothing on other countries.

When Pastor Rick Warren asked McSame if evil exist, McSame said yes in a split second. Evil knows evil when it see & feel it, he didn't even try and explain it. This whole ReThuglican party has evil tendencies, there's nothing consrvative about them. They want you believe they are conservative to save face, but; evil has many faces. Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rove/Hannity/Ingram/ReThug Party/McSame/Palin, etc, etc

Any administration that makes his or her cabinet members sign documents that say they won't divulge wrong doings while in power, has no right being POTUS. Because that person intends to deceive the nation and all other nations to get what they want. They don't have the people in mind, not if they start off deceiving them.

Oh please..............

1.) Conservative echo chamber blogs where a liberal person's comment is deleted before ever being seen by others.
2.) The overwhelming number of conservative pundits, radio hosts, and television shows compared to those with a liberal agenda.

As the past 14 or so years have shown, Republicans/conservatives are significantly farther down that road than liberals.

You libs are so used to parroting the party line you assume everyone else is equally lacking in creativity - I made it up.

Also, I'd watch the use of the plagiarism thing - it might offend your VP selection.

Who cares? What does it matter if they are more "on fire"? If they could produce more of themselves, that would be an issue.

But I don't think all of this "she is being attacked" is going to play well with moderate voters over the next 50 some days. The base might enjoy it, but most folks don't like whiners.

Yes, it is permissible to attack the honor of a POW if he crosses the line. And McCain has crossed the line numerous times. Being a POW does not canonize McCain nor give him a license to do whatever he wants. To attack his dishonorable acts is not to attack his service to the country. They are mutually exclusive. Yes, even a POW is capable of doing dishonorable acts that tarnish his past service and sacrifice for the country. The failure of McCain is his willingness to tarnish his POW status just to win an election.

Until Obama says to McCain: ,"Sir, you are conducting a dishonorable campaign," etc.
then I think he will lose this race.
I am strongly in favor of Obama, but I want to see some hard hitting blows.
If he wants to get McCain truly rattled, then relentlessly (and i mean RELENTLESSLY) attack McCain's honor. That is his soft underbelly.

McCain's honor (if he has any left) should be questioned and LOUDLY and REPEATEDLY!!!

McCain is a liar and he is being called out on it - it about time someone called him out on his fake "country first slogan".

McCain should be ashamed of his gutter politics!!!!!
