ABC News has just sent out the next crop of excerpts from its interview with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. These things can be tricky to judge just from reading (Palin, for instance, came off much better on paper than on camera during last night's installment) but from the looks of it, it seems that Charlie Gibson got her to acknowledge that she was, in fact, once in favor of the Bridge to Nowhere.

Here is the transcript.

CHARLES GIBSON: But you turned against it after Congress had basically pulled the plug on it; after it became apparent that the state was going to have to pay for it, not the Congress; and after it became a national embarrassment to the state of Alaska. So do you want to revise and extend your remarks.

SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form -- earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that's what John McCain has fought. And that's what I joined him in fighting. It's been an embarrassment, not just Alaska's projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.

CHARLES GIBSON: But you were for it before you were against it. You were solidly for it for quite some period of time...

SARAH PALIN: I was...

CHARLES GIBSON: ... until Congress pulled the plug.

SARAH PALIN: I was for infrastructure being built in the state. And it's not inappropriate for a mayor or for a governor to request and to work with their Congress and their congressmen, their congresswomen, to plug into the federal budget along with every other state a share of the federal budget for infrastructure.

CHARLES GIBSON: Right.

Story continues below
advertisement

SARAH PALIN: What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now.

Now, this is not a definitive, "yes, I once supported the Bridge to Nowhere statement." It would have been politically suicidal for Palin to make that claim after the McCain campaign has been arguing for a week -- against countervailing evidence -- the exact opposite. But by acknowledging that she was "for infrastructure in the state" and adding that it wasn't "inappropriate" for Congress to provide those funds, Palin is, in essence, defending her support for the process by which the project came to be. That's an acknowledgment that she did, at one point in time, back the bridge -- an admission the McCain campaign has refused to make.

Other news outlets, it should be noted, are reading this entirely differently. ABC, for instance, is running with the headline: GOV. SARAH PALIN BLASTS CONGRESSIONAL SPENDING, INSISTS SHE OPPOSED 'BRIDGE TO NOWHERE,'" and Mark Halperin, over at Time, writes "Palin Insists She Opposed "Bridge to Nowhere." The actual footage could go a long way towards pinpointing her answer.

Of course, all this is a somewhat unnecessary and lawyerly debate as the facts seem all but indisputable: Palin expressed support for the Bridge To Nowhere during her gubernatorial campaign. When the topic became an issue of embarrassment for Alaskans, and when Congress pulled the rug out from under it (though the state got to keep the funds), she opposed the project and put the final nail in the coffin. Case closed.

Not so clear is what she means when she says: "What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now."

The bridge was never built. And the ferry that served as a connector to Gravina Island was there even before the earmark became so infamous.

Ms. Palin’s second interview will be taped Tuesday in Cincinnati, Ohio, and will be shown on “Hannity & Colmes,” Fox’s 9 p.m. political talk show, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thanks but No Thanks. She cannot have my vote and they will get my rating.

Ms. Palin sat down for her first TV interview, with the ABC anchorman Charles Gibson, Thursday in Alaska and we are not watching. The three-part interview with Mr. Gibson continues today. Saturday’s are tough NOT to watch TV so just refrain from ABC. The Thanks But No Thanks media boycott is working. Gibson/Palin ratings are low. WELL DONE! We have had enough.

Mr. Hannity’s interview with Ms. Palin will likely be a boon for “Hannity & Colmes,” just as Bill O’Reilly’s four-part interview with Barack Obama boosted the ratings for “The O’Reilly Factor” this week. Mr. O’Reilly’s 8 p.m. program has reached 4.3 million viewers through Wednesday of this week, about double his average audience size.

Let ‘Fox’ think what they want but we are not watching or listening to anymore lies. Or Sarah Palin in the bubble.

Say No to Hannity/Palin TV Ratings.

Kudos are in order, I suppose..

The John McCain campaign is sending out
FAULTY ABSENTEE VOTER REGISTRATION FORMS.

So far voters in Ohio, Virginia, and New Mexico have received them.

They may be trying to have you dropped from the voter registration list (i.e. "caging"),
but they are definitely trying to cause confusion with Democratic voters.

There is no evidence that the McCain campaign is sending absentee ballots to Republican voters.

If you get one...
DON'T USE IT!

YOU SHOULD HANG ON TO IT,
IT MAY BE USABLE AS EVIDENCE of ELECTION FRAUD.

I hear It's bad down in virginia! They are going after College students, even saying they will pull grants if they vote in the wrong location. Other states now have to have Lots of I.D to even vote, thats happening in Florida! this is wide spread.

And you think needing ID has something to do with these applications? In Ohio, we had to show ID at the last election, also. What did McCain do then to cause this?

They're saying student may lose their grants, their parents may not be able to claim them on taxes, and the students have to change the ID (all of it, license plates etc.) to VA.

Perhaps someone, in no uncertain terms, could explain to me how, in a democracy already functoning for 230 years, ballots are being sent out by one of the parties participating in the election ...

Am I missing something ?

Here in the Netherlands I get my voting card from the election committee. The local branch of it (run by some civil servants who put a 12 hour day into it) check it against a centralized list.

I vote.

That's it.

Why would anyone have to "register" to be able to vote in a democracy ?

These weren't ballots. They were applications to be sent absentee ballots. The problem with the ones the Republicans sent out is that there is an extra box to check that is not on the ones from the Board of Elections.

In this country, you register to cut down on fraud. The hope is it keeps you from voting more than once...unless you live in Chicago. There you can vote often and even if you are dead.

And who received these?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:18 PM on 09/13/2008

You have forgotten Missouri. I recieved an automated phone call about 2 weeks ago stating that I would be getting a Absentee Voter Registration Form or I am not real sure I was thinking they actually said a Absentee Ballot. Not real sure which one it was. I found it odd because I thought that was something that I would have to request from my local election board.

I actually thought about calling the local Republican Headquarters and requesting one, and then request one from through the proper channels and then compair the 2.

I find it hard to believe that this isn't illegal. Has anyone that has recieved one of these forms given it to their local news or to the national news. This needs to be brought to the attention of the citizens that are going to be voting in this election.

I have yet to recieve this in the mail.

I also read that the return address envelope sent along with the form are basically fake addresses.

It's just an application for a ballot. In Ohio you can pick them up a lot of places including the county fair. It was in the Enquirer explaining what was being done about it which I explained in a post above.

Here is the definition, per Wiki, of REFORM, that Sarah Palin said is their platfom,
"Reform means beneficial change, or sometimes, more specifically, reversion to a pure original state.

Reform may be no more than fine tuning, or at most redressing serious wrongs without altering the fundamentals of the system. Reform seeks to improve the system as it stands, never to overthrow it wholesale."

What that means is 4 more years of the last 8 years = 12 years of GOP oppression

Here's the problem, they won't let her out on her own, and they control the questions. SP on her own would flounder, she has to be scripted or it's a no go. To tout this women as a strong women is absurd, she hides behind men at every juncture, she uses men with her looks, I hate to admit this as a woman myself but it's done all the time. She is so unqualified it's scary, I would love to see a women in the White House, but not this women, I want a women that can think for herself, not what she is told to think.

I wouldn't be terribly concerned with the GFK poll... or any poll... They are polling the old archaic way of land line phones... Most people have... cell phones. Plus the electoral map debates give Obama in or about 290 to McCains 230 something.

Again, you have to look at the polling methodology. See the Huffington Post report link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/09/poll-madness-mccain-takes_n_125158.html

While we have to keep fighting and must take poll numbers seriously, we must also question the validitiy of polling that can be so fundamentally manipulated. In other words, hang in there and keep working.

Since you are so sure he knows nothing, by 2012 he will be so unpopular that HRC will win the Demoratic nomination. Who is taking caring of the kids particularly the 4 month old baby with Downs while mom is campaigning intensely, and being programmed with talking points for the press? Just Daddy?
Her kids are used to mom being around here and there as she apparently was as guv. if I were a youngster I'd be sad and suffer with her absence, RESENT it. If McCain wins these kids are going to suffer a lot more. Not that Daddy can't raise them. But watching mom place foreign travel, politics and governance before their needs will cause damage.
What does she say to he four kids at home as she breezes thru?

The point here is that she has 5 children - a lot by anyone's standards and 3 of them have circumstances that require MORE than "normal" needs - a child with Down syndrome (these children havea multitude of physical issues), a teenage pregnant daughter and a son who just shipped off to Iraq to avoid going to jail for a liquor store burglary. Perhaps, just perhaps, if she had been at home or had a less demanding job, the teenage children might not have had the issues they are dealing with.
