ABC News has just sent out the next crop of excerpts from its interview with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. These things can be tricky to judge just from reading (Palin, for instance, came off much better on paper than on camera during last night's installment) but from the looks of it, it seems that Charlie Gibson got her to acknowledge that she was, in fact, once in favor of the Bridge to Nowhere.

Here is the transcript.

CHARLES GIBSON: But you turned against it after Congress had basically pulled the plug on it; after it became apparent that the state was going to have to pay for it, not the Congress; and after it became a national embarrassment to the state of Alaska. So do you want to revise and extend your remarks.

SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form -- earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that's what John McCain has fought. And that's what I joined him in fighting. It's been an embarrassment, not just Alaska's projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.

CHARLES GIBSON: But you were for it before you were against it. You were solidly for it for quite some period of time...

SARAH PALIN: I was...

CHARLES GIBSON: ... until Congress pulled the plug.

SARAH PALIN: I was for infrastructure being built in the state. And it's not inappropriate for a mayor or for a governor to request and to work with their Congress and their congressmen, their congresswomen, to plug into the federal budget along with every other state a share of the federal budget for infrastructure.

CHARLES GIBSON: Right.

Story continues below
advertisement

SARAH PALIN: What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now.

Now, this is not a definitive, "yes, I once supported the Bridge to Nowhere statement." It would have been politically suicidal for Palin to make that claim after the McCain campaign has been arguing for a week -- against countervailing evidence -- the exact opposite. But by acknowledging that she was "for infrastructure in the state" and adding that it wasn't "inappropriate" for Congress to provide those funds, Palin is, in essence, defending her support for the process by which the project came to be. That's an acknowledgment that she did, at one point in time, back the bridge -- an admission the McCain campaign has refused to make.

Other news outlets, it should be noted, are reading this entirely differently. ABC, for instance, is running with the headline: GOV. SARAH PALIN BLASTS CONGRESSIONAL SPENDING, INSISTS SHE OPPOSED 'BRIDGE TO NOWHERE,'" and Mark Halperin, over at Time, writes "Palin Insists She Opposed "Bridge to Nowhere." The actual footage could go a long way towards pinpointing her answer.

Of course, all this is a somewhat unnecessary and lawyerly debate as the facts seem all but indisputable: Palin expressed support for the Bridge To Nowhere during her gubernatorial campaign. When the topic became an issue of embarrassment for Alaskans, and when Congress pulled the rug out from under it (though the state got to keep the funds), she opposed the project and put the final nail in the coffin. Case closed.

Not so clear is what she means when she says: "What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now."

The bridge was never built. And the ferry that served as a connector to Gravina Island was there even before the earmark became so infamous.

Maybe McCain should get a pig in lipstick to run as VP. We might like that one better, especially if he dresses her up cute like ms. piggy. Awwwww....

This is backfiring and I love it. Schmidt and Co. must be freaking about subsequent real interviews. I have never seen anything like this. No interviews and then the one that she gives is released in tiny excerpts. This is exactly the tactic that Bush used to get us into Iraq. Incrementally, they release tiny bits of unfavorable yet not damning info and people just accept it. I think that is how Hitler operated as well. I'm just afraid that these raids on the Pakistan border are part of a bigger scheme to get Bin Laden and claim the GOP did it and hand the election over to McCain.

OMG ...

1) Wants a war with Russia because of Georgia. How ignorant, she didn't knew that Georgia provoked the war in the beginning. I live in Europe, so we follow the case much better.
2) Don't know the word Nuclear (Nukuleku, or something like that).
3) Haven't got the faintest idea about how to solve the economic mess. Proposes a kind of voodoo economics from the 80's.

She was saying if they join NATO, then it would be our responsibility to intervene

Thats why i hate that mess. Why intervene for someone else's problems that THEY started

Pity you oh so "sophisticated" Europeans didn't intervene when Hitler took back the Rhineland. One of the longest periods of peace in "sophisticated" Europes history has been had under the shield of the U.S.A. And it was the U.S.A. that so generously paid to rebuild your "sophisticatedly" ruined countries. If we hadn't been willing to protect your gutless backsides, you'd all be speaking German - or Russian! Do you know how many countries have repaid their war debt to the United States? TWO - Finland and Taiwan (The Republic of China)!! The only reason there is a Europe is due to American largesse. I think it would be best if you Europeans paid your debts first - otherwise say a big Thank You, and keep your mouths shut!

But she wont, because she cannot control what the citizens say and they wont let her get a free pass. All she'll do is repeat the same ol same ol

If America elects McCain/Palin, then these two are the image of Ame.ric-a; they represent the American people to all mankind.

Do the i.g-n..o.rant voters who yell U.SA, US.A and voted for Bush, realize that their Bush has led er.i.ca.i.ca in a spiralling d.e.cli.ne?

After 8 years of Bush, are we stronger, richer, more secure? Do we have more well paying jobs? Is gas cheaper?
Do we want more of Bush?

Personally, I think Bush and McCain are idiots for their mindless belief in man having an influence on "Global Warming". Only the truly gullible believe in that foolishness. I'd prefer someone much more Conservative (Classically Liberal). I DETEST and fear the Democrats love of Fascism, no matter how kindly it pretends to be. Re-read "Animal Farm".

Who cares about polls, but since they like them so much, Mc P alin got a peak of 5 point bounce from convention AND P alin HUGE excitement. O bama's post convention bounce was up to 10 points by the next monday and of course was interrupted by RNC. Next time around Dems should hold convention last.

I talked to a friend that was at the DNC. Interesting thing. He asked for a show of hands on who exclusively uses cell phones vs. who uses land lines. Overwhelmingly the crowd indicated using cell phones only and no land lines, some had both,, but many don't answer. Like me. If it looks like a telemarketer. I don't answer. Who does answer telemarketer looking calls (i.e., unknown, or ooo-oooo)? I thinks the polls are grossly biased in favor of the old guard.

Amazing John McCain. He finds a rich woman to get him out of his first marriage and buy him a seat in congress.

This brave man could not figure out how to save himself. He could not leave his first wife unless he found someone else to take care of him.

After all he has never held a job in his life. He is the son of privilege. He finish almost last in his class, destroyed several airplanes, and still was aloud to stay in the military.

Now when his campaign is faltering, he finds another woman to save him. She is able to do what he again could not do for himself.

You think he hides behind skirts or just uses women? Never mind that he is against equal pay for equal work. No reproductive rights. No right to health care. No early education for children.

No, no women your only purpose in life is to serve the needs of Amazing John McCain.

No he hides behind the skirt. Watch the video of him and Obama walking down the ramp for the Sept 11 memorial. Obama is making polite conversation and McCain is clearly uncomfortable. Then he stops and grabs Cindy for deflection. It was very telling.

Except NATO would not blindly militarily defend a member. She's already stating that Georgia was unprovoked, that's disputable. In fact NATO found otherwise, and only got Russia to withdraw from Georgia but not Ossetia and Abskhazia.

Other irritating things about the interview(s) was:

-the severe and peculiar editing
-the fact that they spread them out over days
-that it wasn't broadcast as one complete interview
-and that what WAS broadcast was not the same in different parts of the country
-that Gib-son truncated Pa-lin's quote about God and "task" while the truncated part provided the answer to his question - very sli-my journalism.

Being spread out over several days was done at Palins request. It's a common tactic. The notion is it keeps the questions a little friendlier if the journalist knows they can be kicked out after the 1st day.

It was broadcast over several nights for - business and ratings. Like any program is aired.

The editing - Palin would have had 1st rights for exclusion of some frames. There may have been no choice but to go with the odd editing after she was done with it.

The different broadcast contents? Is there proof?

MSN did nothing to recoup its reputation with this interview, for sure. It will please its small audience share. It will not convince its lost audience to return.

Gibson was unprofessional. I really thought he'd be able to find the middle ground in his tone and ask the obvious questions, too.

I was wrong.

Honestly, I can't quite figure this out. I know he's capable, but he sure didn't hit the mark.
