ABC News has just sent out the next crop of excerpts from its interview with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. These things can be tricky to judge just from reading (Palin, for instance, came off much better on paper than on camera during last night's installment) but from the looks of it, it seems that Charlie Gibson got her to acknowledge that she was, in fact, once in favor of the Bridge to Nowhere.

Here is the transcript.

CHARLES GIBSON: But you turned against it after Congress had basically pulled the plug on it; after it became apparent that the state was going to have to pay for it, not the Congress; and after it became a national embarrassment to the state of Alaska. So do you want to revise and extend your remarks.

SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form -- earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that's what John McCain has fought. And that's what I joined him in fighting. It's been an embarrassment, not just Alaska's projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.

CHARLES GIBSON: But you were for it before you were against it. You were solidly for it for quite some period of time...

SARAH PALIN: I was...

CHARLES GIBSON: ... until Congress pulled the plug.

SARAH PALIN: I was for infrastructure being built in the state. And it's not inappropriate for a mayor or for a governor to request and to work with their Congress and their congressmen, their congresswomen, to plug into the federal budget along with every other state a share of the federal budget for infrastructure.

CHARLES GIBSON: Right.

Story continues below

SARAH PALIN: What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now.

Now, this is not a definitive, "yes, I once supported the Bridge to Nowhere statement." It would have been politically suicidal for Palin to make that claim after the McCain campaign has been arguing for a week -- against countervailing evidence -- the exact opposite. But by acknowledging that she was "for infrastructure in the state" and adding that it wasn't "inappropriate" for Congress to provide those funds, Palin is, in essence, defending her support for the process by which the project came to be. That's an acknowledgment that she did, at one point in time, back the bridge -- an admission the McCain campaign has refused to make.

Other news outlets, it should be noted, are reading this entirely differently. ABC, for instance, is running with the headline: GOV. SARAH PALIN BLASTS CONGRESSIONAL SPENDING, INSISTS SHE OPPOSED 'BRIDGE TO NOWHERE,'" and Mark Halperin, over at Time, writes "Palin Insists She Opposed "Bridge to Nowhere." The actual footage could go a long way towards pinpointing her answer.

Of course, all this is a somewhat unnecessary and lawyerly debate as the facts seem all but indisputable: Palin expressed support for the Bridge To Nowhere during her gubernatorial campaign. When the topic became an issue of embarrassment for Alaskans, and when Congress pulled the rug out from under it (though the state got to keep the funds), she opposed the project and put the final nail in the coffin. Case closed.

Not so clear is what she means when she says: "What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now."

The bridge was never built. And the ferry that served as a connector to Gravina Island was there even before the earmark became so infamous.

Sarah gave a B performance responded well no gaffes,,, even Gibson was wrong on the Bush doctrine.... Gibson and ABC get a D from most everyone for the gotcha interview , double standard....even Clinton's former adviser is saying Palin will gain because of the softball questions that Barack got from George S who got him off the hook with his Muslim Faith

I'm so glad to see that there are women with COMMON SENSE on both sides of this campaign. Kudos to those women.

The rest of the country's women need to wake up and realize they:

1. Don't like being lied to.
2. Don't like being used.
3. Don't like being called names.
4. Don't like those who flip flops.
5. Don't like women who kiss up.
6. Don't like a woman telling them what to do with their body.
7. Don't like men who think they are complete dummies.
8. Know inside when someone is lying to them.
9. Know inside who they can trust.

When you are using your COMMON SENSE, you are in tuned to all of the above. If you're not, you need to WAKE UP!

Looking back at the Obama interview with Gib-son there's something near the end that is curious.

Gib-son asked what if Is-rael feels it needs to make strikes against Iran.
O bama said that it wasn't his "job as a candidate, certainly, to tell Is-rael what their defense posture should be...".
Maybe he feels it would be his job as President to tell them what to do but, regardless, he pretty much agrees that we shouldn't second guess Is-rael.

The other curious thing is the demeanor of the interviewer.
Still has the Professor Santa Claus eyeglass thing going but the attitude is markedly different.

She definitely memorized the Israel answer correctly. She had to prove to Jewish voters that she's not like her pastor "Jews for Jesus", who believes they're being punished. Besides it was Lieberman who tutored her for two weeks, she could NOT get that wrong.

Curious, no one taught to add the caveat..or they did and she chose to ignore it.

LIE!

What am I missing here? Palin still kept the Federal money from the bridge to nowhere and spent it on other infrastructure projects in the state. So who is kidding who? Palin did NOT reject the funds from the Federal earmark. All she and the state eventually did was NOT build the bridge. This is the reality. For such a rich state that is always giving tax rebates to residents, why do they need all these handouts?

And have NEVER ONCE indicated to the public what she did with those funds. Who knows if she didn't send them to Switzerland to a private account for herself or something. Aren't they supposed to give an accounting for government money they receive? So, why aren't the press asking for an accounting? Who's trying to hide what here?

The monies were appropriated and spent on other projects around the state.

BUT, a huge portion was spent building a road...to where the bridge was supposed to be.

Nice new road, never ever been used - going nowhere.

She approved that expenditure.

This is just plain (palin/plain get it?) scary:GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: They’re our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.

This one had me laughing out loud. Ready for a lesson in Alaska geography/International Affairs? Off the coast of Nome, 532 miles northwest of Anchorage (the closest city) is an island called Little Diomede. Little Diomede is 2.4 miles east of the island called Big Diomede, which is in Russia.

Little Diomede, Alaska has a population of 146. It is 2.5 square miles in area. There are 42 children in the school. Nobody drives to work. Big Diomede is a whopping 26 square miles. On a clear day you can see the Island of Big Diomede from the western shore of Little Diomede. Therefore Sarah Palin is capable of negotiating with Putin and Sakashvili to peacefully settle the violent conflict that has been burgeoning in the separatist enclave of South Ossetia. REALLY? She really is out of touch...what an ego! As Keith Oberman said "I can see into Chase Bank from my office...does that make me Alan Greenspan?"

What a joke that response was from her. I still don't believe she said that. Are we supposed to be that dumb to think she's got the skinny on Russia now?

If either she or McCain was interviewed by Keith alone, neither would get up from the KO they will receive from him.

At least Gibson was better than as co-moderator of that debate where he and Stephanopolous asked Obama those foolish questions! As for Palin...she kept the $232,000,000 for Alaska that was earmarked for that bridge...ans we NEVER found out how that cash was spent! NICE REFORM...NOT!!

It's wild that Plain as Mayor of Wasilla insisted women pay for rape kits.

Was it some sort of punishment? Like a fine?

The state legislature had to specifically address this insane Wasilla-specific practice, and overturn Palin?

How is she "like us"? She lives in a huge house on a lake and owns a plane. I don't know anyone like that. I know a lot of people who were or are raised like Obama. But few do so much with so little.

The Dems need to point this out

P alin type of people, believe rape is a woman's fault, everything is always the victims' fault, their answer to everything is "pull yourself up and get over it". It's what they mean by "small gov't", you get raped? Pay for your own kit! Meanwhile they spend 10 billion a month on unnecessary wars. That's the Republi cons!

This week, Barack Obama has given AMAZING speeches about the economy and education. Where is the coverage of it? THAT should be first page news on the huffington post, so anyone who comes here with misconceptions about Obama's plan can actually see what he stands for? All this Palin coverage, even though it's negative, is only serviing to distract us and voters from hearing what Barack Obama stands for. Shame on you, Huff Post. Get it together!!!!!!

Even though I feel Charles Gibson did OK with the interview without trying to appear like a bully, he did get some ridiculous answers from her. Palin couldn't no longer deny that she asked for earmarks, however she then blamed congress for giving them ??? Was I hearing correctly?

Of course, she did. That is what governors do for their states. All governors. However, she reduced the reliance upon earmarks tremendously. Her record on that cannot be attacked.

Her predecessor abused the earmarks.

As did O in Illinois, obviously.

This issue is pretty well settled in my mind, anyway. I get her strengths.

I think people who question her readiness to step in as commander in chief have a good point. That's her weakness. It's the weakness of O, too. It works against both candidates.

The rest of the criticisms are just polical smears coming from the press who obviously is so in the tank for O that they should be stripped of their press corps nametags. They should be labeled PR guys.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:49 AM on 09/13/2008

It is easy to pick and choose what sounds good.

O never said he was going to washington to get rid of earmarks...

He has stated that he does not want special interests to "buy" all the seats. Thus they will have a seat as well as others.

Okay so it is okay for her to go after earmarks? I'm not advocating earmarks but she still went after them herself.

SP Did... She lied and said she said "Thanks but no Thanks" No she shut it down after she realized congress wasn't going to giver her what she wanted.

It is opinion that O does not have the experience just as is it is about SP however she continues to lie about her record and distorts the truth. She said she went to Iraq and then the Battle Zone. No she went to the Iraq/Kuwait border. Why did she have to lie. She simply has to accept her record as it is. She has a right to defend it but she can't change it.

I know I'm not going to change your mind it is made up but as a former military officer she shows less leadership than what I expected from my officers. But it is only my opinion.
