ABC News has just sent out the next crop of excerpts from its interview with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. These things can be tricky to judge just from reading (Palin, for instance, came off much better on paper than on camera during last night's installment) but from the looks of it, it seems that Charlie Gibson got her to acknowledge that she was, in fact, once in favor of the Bridge to Nowhere.

Here is the transcript.

CHARLES GIBSON: But you turned against it after Congress had basically pulled the plug on it; after it became apparent that the state was going to have to pay for it, not the Congress; and after it became a national embarrassment to the state of Alaska. So do you want to revise and extend your remarks.

SARAH PALIN: It has always been an embarrassment that abuse of the ear form -- earmark process has been accepted in Congress. And that's what John McCain has fought. And that's what I joined him in fighting. It's been an embarrassment, not just Alaska's projects. But McCain gives example after example after example. I mean, every state has their embarrassment.

CHARLES GIBSON: But you were for it before you were against it. You were solidly for it for quite some period of time...

SARAH PALIN: I was...

CHARLES GIBSON: ... until Congress pulled the plug.

SARAH PALIN: I was for infrastructure being built in the state. And it's not inappropriate for a mayor or for a governor to request and to work with their Congress and their congressmen, their congresswomen, to plug into the federal budget along with every other state a share of the federal budget for infrastructure.

CHARLES GIBSON: Right.

Story continues below

SARAH PALIN: What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now.

Now, this is not a definitive, "yes, I once supported the Bridge to Nowhere statement." It would have been politically suicidal for Palin to make that claim after the McCain campaign has been arguing for a week -- against countervailing evidence -- the exact opposite. But by acknowledging that she was "for infrastructure in the state" and adding that it wasn't "inappropriate" for Congress to provide those funds, Palin is, in essence, defending her support for the process by which the project came to be. That's an acknowledgment that she did, at one point in time, back the bridge -- an admission the McCain campaign has refused to make.

Other news outlets, it should be noted, are reading this entirely differently. ABC, for instance, is running with the headline: GOV. SARAH PALIN BLASTS CONGRESSIONAL SPENDING, INSISTS SHE OPPOSED 'BRIDGE TO NOWHERE,'" and Mark Halperin, over at Time, writes "Palin Insists She Opposed "Bridge to Nowhere." The actual footage could go a long way towards pinpointing her answer.

Of course, all this is a somewhat unnecessary and lawyerly debate as the facts seem all but indisputable: Palin expressed support for the Bridge To Nowhere during her gubernatorial campaign. When the topic became an issue of embarrassment for Alaskans, and when Congress pulled the rug out from under it (though the state got to keep the funds), she opposed the project and put the final nail in the coffin. Case closed.

Not so clear is what she means when she says: "What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now."

The bridge was never built. And the ferry that served as a connector to Gravina Island was there even before the earmark became so infamous.

Thanks. (For those who don't know, this was the Miss South Carolina answering a question about education.) I think of this just about every time I see Sarah Palin. She's BS'ing. It's what we all did in junior high. She's EXACTLY THE SAME as Miss South Carolina. Not as hot.

Personally I think too much is made by both parties of the disgruntled Hillary voters. Most staunch Democrats I know vote Democrat no matter what. Hillary is partly to blame for pretending that all her 18 million "glass ceiling votes" came from women.

As everybody remembers, they came mostly from "bitter" rural religious gun-toting male racists who just voted for her because she was the only white person on the ticket. Such people would now vote for McCain anyway, for exactly the same reason. Palin was never needed by McCain, he already had their votes. With Lieberman he could have gotten the Jewish vote which he will now lose to Biden.

It's not beginning to look like a Republican House, that's ridiculous. You could make a lot of money on your projection if you're right -- how much are you betting? You should probably put your house up as collateral.

No, because she is incompetent...SOME of us do think and use our brains...you republicans had no choice, unlike McSame, who threw his choice out the window when he was told that Lieberman (at least he had a brain) could not be his veep....change? He won't change, he's a slave to the power of his party

OMG please, something here you just don't grasp. Democrats think. We like Obama because of his policies, because we've studied his website. We dislike Palin because she's clearly not qualified and her choice was for the cheapest kind of politics, not for someone who can responsibly run the country.

No, we don't do things "because we're told to." Sadly, it's the Republicans who are called "dittoheads"

That makes 2 of us ; - )

Not only is she corrupt but I'm sorry, as a mother, I'm concerned for the welfare of her newborn. This is a critical time for the newborn to develop its bond with the mother. Sure, the bond begins while it's in utero but continues through the early years of that child's life. Sarah likes to talk about family values but it appears to me that she values her career more than her family.

How can a mother go back to work 3 DAYS after giving birth????? I mean I have 2 kids and it took me at the minimum 3 WEEKS to recuperate for each child and provide the maternal care that only a mother provides to a newborn.

Sadly McSame is proving he is not up to the job. He professes ignorance on major issues facing America today. Doesn't know Palin's record and stance on some major issues, or worse, he lies about it and expects Palin to play along. Palin didn't get the memo in time, but would make no difference because the FACTS say otherwise. Where are the commercials? Someone should be paying me some serious money! LOL!

Hey, Huffpo posters - if you have a minute, think about sending an encouraging email to Charlie G (assuming you thought he did a decent job w/ this interview). I thought he did a pretty good job of being neutral and in asking follow-up questions when he got a "blizzard of words" or an untrue reply from the dear Gov.

Charlie is getting some pretty serious hate mail/comments from the right-wingers who are saying he was mean, over-bearing, sexist, condescending, petty, or just plain not respectful enough.

Good point. They are seriously unleashing the Hounds of Hate against Charlie over there. You can leave a comment here:

The plan failed miserably. Coulda been Rove's, but somehow I doubt it. The powers-that-be in the McSame camp thought what better way to reintroduce Palin (after the convention) than appearing on national tv for a puff interview with Charlie. No wonder Palin wasn't ready. She couldn't use her quips/witty responses because the interview dealt with issues, FACTS if you will. Either the McSame camp didn't VET Charlie, couldn't dictate the terms/paramaters/limits of the interview, get a transcript of the questions to be asked, whatever.

The McSame camp better pull all the stops on damage control. No doubt Palin will take a much, much needed break and won't be taking part in any time soon in more of them serious, in-depth interviews. However, there must be a show or two that would bend over backwards to make sure Palin's image is rehabilitated. Rove and Company, get on them phones!

She did not live up to the expectation. Conservative commentators are saying that she didn't make any "horrible mistakes"... wow... what a vote of confidence! Reminds me of the line from the film American Beauty: "I watched you very closely honey... you didn't screw up once!" Others are saying she's just not ready for prime-time. So she's not ready to answer the most basic questions about her record and her positions but she's ready to step in a lead the free world? She's been interviewed before. She's got all this "experience", right? The only difference is that back then she was being herself; now she's trying to be both qualified for a position that she had no interest in and on board with McCain's campaign strategy.

Regarding Obama's "ummms"...

I'd rather see someone thinking about the answer to a complex question than repeating a carefully scripted pre-fab answer. Palin was a deer in headlights most of the time. Her fashion glasses couldn't hide her eyes.

It was funny how the 3 things she memorized that she'd do for the economy happen to be what the Bush administration would do, which was the exact opposite of Gibson's question.

It's a nullification statement meant to redirect our attention ~ which likely Pit-Bull Palin didn't think of herself.

Of course Palin supported the bridge to nowhere when it was convienent. She supports that which at the time will further her own career and her own agenda.

Economic prudence always sounds smart and is always welcomed by the people and has been used by politicians since the Roman Empire.

Why is she uncomfortable with foreign policy? Doesn't AK's proximity to Russia make her an expert? Doesn't her having "executive" make her an expert? Doesn't her knowledge on "energy" make her an expert? No it doesn't. She is inept, unqualified and comes off as dumb. How can she not know what the Bush Doctrine is? Gibson shouldn't have to explain it to her.

Did you see a different interview? Are you crazy? This woman is not very bright. She speaks in fragmented sentences and is a worse speaker than Bush. She was able to spew some memorized talking points but couldn't even directly answer the questions. Charlie Gibson had it right. All she does is throw out a "blizzard of words." I can't wait for the debates -- her answers should be very entertaining.

Actually she threw out a bunch of words but never answered a question. On the earmarks issue when Charlie brought up the crab mating and seal DNA, she seemed to say this was o.k. because it was basic research which you can make a case for...but then McCain is out talking about ridiculous earmarks and as an example he gives the study of bear DNA. If basic research is legitimate then which earmarks are we talking about cutting? She just made a statement but failed to be able to support it which is what she's done with every answer. In my eyes not only is she not knowledgeable but she's not coming off as even very smart or a deep thinker. She comes off as the opposite. Isn't that what we have in the White House now? Why would we want more of the same? If you read Obama's books, he actually has a very deep and historical understanding of issues - "ummms" aside. He is able to think...

That was the most terrifying interview I have ever seen .... if it was not so frightening I would be laughing my head off ... one heartbeat away from the presidency and her grasp on issues was less sophisticated than an eight grader .... call it "stupidification" (Macedo, 1988) call it an idocracy (from the movie of the same name) ... it is pathetic, it is sad ... and we need to insure that this wanna be theocratic fascist (well except she probably could not define those two words ---) remains as far away from Washington DC as possible ...
