ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The abuse of power investigation against Sarah Palin, Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate, took a potentially ominous turn for her party on Friday when state lawmakers voted to subpoena her husband.

Republican efforts to delay the probe until after the Nov. 4 election were thwarted when GOP State Sen. Charlie Huggins, who represents Palin's hometown of Wasilla, sided with Democrats. "Let's just get the facts on the table," said Huggins, who appeared in camouflage pants to vote during a break from moose hunting.

The Senate committee acted at the request of investigator Stephen Branchflower, who is gathering evidence on whether Gov. Palin abused her power by firing Walt Monegan, the state's director of public safety. Critics charge she fired Monegan after he refused to dismiss Mike Wooten, a state trooper who had a messy divorce from the governor's sister. Palin says Monegan was let go because of a budget dispute.

Thomas Van Flein, the Palins' private attorney now representing her as governor, did not immediately return calls for comment. In a broadcast interview, Palin said she welcomed the investigation.

"There's nothing to hide," she said in an interview with ABC's Charles Gibson. "Commissioner Monegan has said, 'The governor never asked me to fire him, the governor's husband never asked me to fire him,' and we never did. I never pressured him to hire or fire anybody."

Branchflower said he wants to interview the governor, but omitted her from the 13-person list of subpoena targets he presented to the lawmakers overseeing his investigation.

He said Todd Palin is "such a central figure. ... I think one should be issued for him."

Palin, cast at last week's Republican National Convention as a supportive husband, oil rig worker and championship snowmachine racer, has emerged in the days since as also a powerful figure in his wife's administration. Despite holding no government position, he attends official meetings and is copied on e-mails concerning state business.

While Todd Palin's role in the dismissal of Monegan is unknown, the request for a subpoena suggests he spurned earlier calls to testify voluntarily. Monegan voluntarily submitted to an interview earlier in the week.

Nor was it immediately clear whether Van Flein was representing Todd Palin as well as the governor in the investigation. Van Flein is working at taxpayer expense to represent the governor in her personal and official capacity.

The subpoenas, which were approved for 12 state employees in addition to Todd Palin, instantly gave a new, national significance to what until recently was a controversy confined to Alaska.

The McCain campaign released a statement from Alaska Lt. Governor Sean Parnell, blaming Democrats.

"I'm disappointed by the complete hijacking of what should be a fair and objective process," the Republican said, calling the investigation a "smear."

The investigation _ dubbed "Troopergate" _ began before Palin was chosen as Sen. John McCain's running mate. Since then, Palin's supporters have argued that the investigation is politically motivated, and urged lawmakers to turn the matter over to the three-member State Personnel Board, which is appointed by the governor and charged with handling ethics complaints.

In his presentation to lawmakers, Branchflower revealed evidence that the governor's office interceded to try to have Wooten's worker's compensation claim denied.

An employee at a company that handles such claims for the state, Harbor Adjustment Service, told Branchflower that the company's owner said "the governor's office wanted the claim denied."

One of the subpoenas issued Friday was for the company's owner, Murlene Wilkes. Branchflower said he had an informal conversation with Wilkes in August, and believes she was lying when she said she had never been contacted by the governor's office. Wilkes did not immediately return a telephone call.

Monegan says he received repeated e-mails and phone calls from Palin, her husband and her staff expressing dismay over Wooten's continued employment.

One member of Palin's administration was caught on tape discussing personal information about Wooten, raising questions of how he knew those details.

Branchflower also asked for a subpoena for the phone records of one Palin administration official, Frank Bailey. Bailey was recorded calling an Alaska State Trooper lieutenant and discussing confidential information about Wooten, including his job application and worker's compensation claim. In a deposition taken by Palin's attorney, he testified that he never saw Wooten's file, but instead received the information from Todd Palin.

Seems like the voters in Alaska got two governors for the price of one. Makes you wonder which one of them REALLY governs in Alaska.

So much for her breaking the "glass ceiling" for women. she cant even do her own job as mayor or governor. she is just an empty suit.

What's with her parading her little baby for political purposes? To show that she's a good mother? Sorry, but a good mother wouldnt use her own child as a campaign prop. That little baby should be home in his own crib and not being paraded around by his ambitious mother. Im not saying that a Downs syndrome baby should be hidden away. Im saying that NO baby should be used that way and be dragged from pillar to post. All babies that age need lots of sleep in familiar surroundings and should be kept on a regular schedule.

Who is taking care of all of her children while she's campaigning?

Her choices of parenting style is her personal business and it is irrelevant to 95% of Americans. We have our own problems. The questions are how would McCain/Palin address my concerns about the economics, healthcare, education for my kids, rising costs of food and utilities etc.

My thing is a McCain/Palin administration will not help my family. We cannot afford to have the republican ticket win the White House.

We need to fight for what we believe in.

Go Obama/Biden/WE THE PEOPLE

I agree to some extent. However, Palin has expressed a desire to have government regulate what other mothers choose to do with their lives and bodies, so the fact that her own back yard is in shambles is slightly relevant. She also belongs to the party that has preached family values and morality to the rest of us for so long that the hypocrisy is thick. I have no children out of wedlock or teenage pregnancies in my family, but we are not christian, nor have we told other people how to live....

This may not relate to troopergate but it is related to Todd Palin. Why aren't we hearing anything about his many year membership in the AIP(Alaska Independence Party)? This group wants Alaska to recind its statehood and secede from the Union. I believe Sarah spoke at some of their meetings so she must have supported her husband's membership. It is offensive that anyone supporting this effort now wants to be vice president of the country she has no problem disowning. Can't have it both ways, Sarah. Where is "the Press" on this?

Can you imagine the apoplexy Limbaugh and the other right wing blowhards would have if it came out that Michelle was a member of a secessionist party, say, a black homeland party?

Now may be a good time to start asking the press just that question. Email the cable news outlets and demand an explantion for this:

"I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her d am ned institutions."
Joe Vogler

"The fires of he ll are frozen glaciers compared to my ha tred for the American government," Vogler

"And I won't be buried under their da mn flag," Vogler

These are the words of the a i p founder. The goal of sucession might be written off as just more weird party politics.

The words of it's founder cannot be ignored, he meant every word he said. He is buried out of the country - so as to not be tainted by the Stars and Stripes flying over him.

Flag pins and hand over heart for anthems, endless questions of are you a patriot being asked
(with a straight face) by every journalist in the country...

and not one freakin word about a VP candidate married to a tr ai tor.

Make the press ask the questions.

No one in the MSM has called out on the First Dude for being a member of the secessionist party. Michelle Obama got rapped for months for merely saying "this is the first time she is really proud of her country"

Why doesn't anyone question his patriotism? America is full of hypocrites. If it would be Michelle in the same situation, Obama would have to step down. The black people still have lots on their shoulders.

There are two things that I find disturbing about this. 1) "First Dude" seems to be some sort of co-
Governor. 2) The Palins were warned twice by the judge presiding over her sister's divorce trial to stop harassing Wooten.

Yep: the "attractive" Sarah Palin is a vindictive "Christian" who HATES with so little restraint that she'll abuse her powers without even a first thought.

It isn't enough that Wooten was subjected publicly to a one-sided smear campaign. Wasn't enough that he was apparently fired. It was necessary to also try to prevent him getting ANY income. To impoverish him into homelessness.

These are hateful people who will stop at nothing to get their jollies at others' expense.

Has the fact that she was subject of a recall -- and got around that by hiring an administrator to do her job for her -- while part-time mayor of Wasilla been reported nationally?

She's going to pay for it now. She goes down in such disgrace that she will be afraid to show her face in public. Track will be absolutely humiliated, and McCain will fall faster than his dick after the viagra wears off.

The Republicans have sent an emergency team to try to contain this because they realize that if Palin goes down, McCain is gone too. Even if they manage to stonewall it somehow he might not win the election, but if Gov. Palin is forced to withdraw it's all over.

If Johnny Mac had just read the newspapers in Alaska, he would have known about all this baggage. He's going to have to pay for all those extra bags and stop trying to shut down the investigation. Sarah was for it before she was against it. They can blame the Democrats all they want it still wont fly. The McCain/Palin ticket is overloaded and won't get off the ground.

Dear iamchazz;

Think what you will about McSame, but don't ever delude yourself into thinking
that he personally vetted Sarah. Johnnie boy put his future, and sadly ours as well,
into the hands of the Neocons and Karl, "say it often, it becomes truth," Rove.

We have all seen the sign-offs of many posters here at HP that say "McCain=Bush."
That is the ultimate truth....so, let's take Karl's method and use it against them,
repeat that phrase, over and over until everyone sees that it IS the TRUTH.

Some Republicans, despite their wearing of religious virtue on their sleeves, are the most shameless hypocrites. If Governor Sarah Palin did nothing wrong then why try to block the investigation? To accuse Democrats of partisanship is laughable. The legislature, with bi-partisan votes, launched the investigation before any one ever thought that Gov. Palin, with less than two years as governor of one of the least populated sates, was conceivably going to be selected as a VP candidate. Do you honestly think that if there was an investigation of Joe Biden, prior to his selection, for any alleged wrong doing, the Republicans would be calling for the probe to be shut down until after the election? I say, if the Governor has nothing to hide as she told Mr. Charlie Gibson, then let the investigation continue without Republican political interference. If she did nothing wrong she will be exonerated and would probably emerge in a much more stronger position. If, on the other hand, the Governor abused her power then she should be held accountable.

It's also important to note that the legislative committee assigned to invsetigate Palin has 10 Republican members, and 5 Democrats. And still that committee voted for the 13 subpoenas.

Granted, Palin made some enemies in her own party by trying to cut in front of them in the line leading to the earmarks trough; but that isn't the whole of it: nothing is perfect, therefore, by flaw alone, there has to be a few Republicans who are honest and respectworthy.

It may not be legal to write about the findings of an investigation while it is ongoing. There are no established facts here. That could be why the MSM are staying clear of the story. But certainly, MSM should be free to report the voting on subpoenas, and the terms of the investigation--what is being investigated, etc.

MSM and Dems can also query McCain's judgement in choosing a VP who is in the midst of an investigation into abuse of power.
