The Bears Military Man
Growing up, Jason McKie lived the military moving plan. He went from California to the Philippines, back to California, then to England, Indiana, Florida and Northern Virginia. Football and service were the two constants.
His father, Nevil, was a military man, a lifer, the kind of man who retired from the Air Force after 21 years and 3 months of service -- then went to work for a defense intelligence agency. Dad wore camouflage pants and shotguns while training, and his son, fascinated by the military career, routinely asked the same question. "Dad, are you a G.I. Joe man?" Jason McKie would say.
From military molded to military minded, McKie did not follow in his father's boot prints, opting instead for a career at the aptly named Soldier Field. But that military influence did leave an impression that carried into the N.F.L., where he is a 28-year-old fullback for the Bears.
