Tim Johnson: Palin's Experience Claims "Laughable," McCain "Hard To Work With"

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota called Sarah Palin "not ready" to be vice president, referencing her recent statements on Russia and Iraq and her "laughable" experience arguments.

One enters Johnson's private hideaway office in the U.S. Capitol to find the Democrat sitting next to a stack of newspapers. While his staff is undergoing a wholesale office move this week, the Senator is working here, only a couple paces from the footpath of tourists, who stream steadily through the hallway just outside the small office's door.

Up for reelection this year in a deep-red state, the Senator was eager to talk politics. Declaring himself unimpressed with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's first interview with Charles Gibson Thursday night, Johnson called her "not ready" to lead the country as vice president. "And this idea that she has national security experience because of the Alaska National Guard, it's just laughable," he added. On the topic of Russia, Johnson said he would have been comforted if her statements in support of a possible war with the nuclear power had been joined "with some discussion of diplomacy."

Nodding toward the pile of newsprint, Johnson said Palin "thinks Iraq had something to do with Sept. 11," a reference to a Friday Washington Post article in which the Alaska Republican is quoted telling soldiers headed for deployment that they would soon be "defend[ing] the innocent from the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans."

"I don't know what else you can do except just keep repeating the facts on Iraq," Johnson said. "I do it until I'm blue in the face."

Though his speech and body movement remain affected by the severe brain hemorrhage that nearly killed him in late 2006, Johnson expresses a palpable desire to keep moving ahead on his top priorities, which include job creation, in addition to farm assistance and water development. "South Dakota is a very dry state," Johnson said, adding that the earmark process frequently vilified by John McCain is actually critical for some of his constituents. "We need a lot of work on [these projects] to keep the clean water pumping," he said.

He even offered a bit of advice to Barack Obama, suggesting that the Democratic nominee should point out the ways in which these programs benefit average Americans. "I think John McCain's mantle of 'reform' can be challenged," Johnson said. "Especially since he's backed away from some of those issues that gave him [that reputation], such as immigration reform."

The Senator also shared a personal story about working in the Senate with John McCain. When serving as the body's rotating chair, Johnson recalls an episode in which he was told, mistakenly, by the Senate's parliamentarian that another Senator was floor manager when it should have been McCain. "Boy, he really gave me heck for that," Johnson said, though the only impact was a few minutes lost on the Senate floor. "I explained I was just doing what the parliamentarian had instructed me to do, but boy ... he can be hard to work with."

Johnson said he was recently reminded that he's hardly the only Senate colleague to have experienced McCain's reportedly white-hot temper.

"We had a caucus the other day and Harry Reid asked everyone, 'raise your hand if you've never been insulted by John McCain,'" Johnson noted with a glint in his eye. "And no one did."

Obama needs to attack McCain's character -- his explosive temper, his self-righteous zealotry, his dishonorable lying (Obama has started attacking on this) and his ludicrous claim about being a reformer who will "change Washington." One two of the most important issues -- Iraq and tax cuts for the rich -- McCain imitates Bush 100%.

Somehow, because McCain was a military hero, he seems immune from attacks on his character. When asked why he didn't know how many houses he owns, he played the POW card. How trashy to try to exploit that. His character is central to his campaign and is what makes him so unqualified, dangerous and despicable.

McCain looks medicated to me.

I have a very hard time believing the polls. I am wondering if the Obama lead is huge, but the pollsters are playing with the numbers to make the race look like a close race to keep our interest. I just cannot bring myself to beleive that a large part of the population is this dumb to fall for the republican lies once again.

Tim, now I have definitely heard of Alaska but where is South Dakota?

I say we draft Gov Jesse Ventura for the Senate. I'm sick of all these wimps complaining about being insulted by McCain. Jesse would not take any crap from McCain and beat the s**t out of him if he got out of line.

Not that I am a Condi Rice fan; but, don't you think Rice must feel insulted that the Republican thugs are trying to present Palin as some one with foreign policy credentials?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:42 PM on 09/13/2008

I blame Rice for not speaking out about how dangerous it is to elect someone completely unqualified as VP (that one heart beat away office). I can't imagine there is anyone on the Republican side who really believes that living next door to Russia gives one foreign policy experience. This Palin move is dangerous. I guess I'm dreaming that at least one of those on the Repub side will speak out...

Rice will be Palin's VP if God forbid, anything happens to McCain.

I day dreamed of voting for the party that has exhausted our military and corrupted it's command with Religious Zealots who want to fight another Religious Crusade!
I got lost in the thought of supporting the party that brought Education down to only teaching the basics and nothing more !
I touted others about how great the party is that cut taxes and staved maintance of the U.S. infustructure !

I'd like to see an Ad made out of the senators being asked if they had 'never' been insulted by John McCain. That will show the American public that he is not easy to work with and we will obviously have a Democratic House and Senate so why should he expect people hes been insulting to work with him?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:06 PM on 09/13/2008

That will give the American people the idea that we are paying senators way too much if this is what they are spending their time doing

It's absolutely mind boggling that many Americans are so willfully ignorant as to ignore the handwriting on the wall. Change is coming. But they will cling to the familiar even to their detriment. McPay-lin is the best the Republicans can come up with and many Americans will hold their noses and vote for this pitiful ticket anyway. Sad.

When Fascism Comes To America; it will be wrapped in the Flag and carrying the Cross'-Sinclair Lewis

Palin is being put forward as a Vice Presidential candidate with attributes which could succeed if 'An American Idol' contest mentality is adopted by the electorate

This election is about stopping the authoritarians from securing power and allow fascism to rise in the US.

Yes We Can

Agreed. It's also about stopping the relentless dumbing down of our nation. Never before in my long life have I seen such disprespect for intelligence and elevation of the mediocre. The rest of the world doesn't want to have a beer with our leaders.

Mr. Johnson, McCain runs things as though he were still in the military. Make a mistake and you will hear from him. I am not saying this is entirely correct, but an explanation that I have seen from many ex-military. Having attended a military college, the same as George C. Marshall, Patton (first year) and many others, our demeanor is more flexible and less strict and I am not sure that it is due to the intense hazing experience. Regardless, with reference to your comments regard Palin's inexperience with foreign policy. Well lets face it. One trip across the other side of the pond does not qualify Obama as an expert in foreign policy any more than Palin, hence the reason for selecting Joe Biden as a candidate. Matt Damon, an intellectual think tank by himself, thought that there was at least a 1 out of 3 chances that McCain would not live through his first term. Not sure how he came up with those numbers, but are ridiculously high, considering the health care offered to a President. One could consider this an issue, as if this were true, then Palin would become President. But, the she will learn quickly, just as Obama will.

Senator McCain has not been in the military for at least 30 years, and to my mind he really overplays the connection--no doubt because he has never fully recovered emotionally from being a POW. Behavior appropriate to the military chain of command is cumbersome in the outside world (and that includes Congress) where one must actually compromise and work and play well with others, a fact that is borne out by the many stories of how notoriously hard to get along with he is. Giving him a pass because he spent part of his life being a soldier is ridiculous; my husband spent 20 years in the Air Force but he never stamped his foot and demanded people acknowledge rank outside the military environment. Nor did he continue to employ "mission"-focused thinking to the exclusion of common sense and good manners.

A trip across the pond may not qualify Obama as having FP experience, it;s his intelligence and understanding of the big picture that qualifies him. And his judgement. Hey, half the things he said about Iraq, Iran, Pakistan.... he was criticized as naive. But it has turned out that he was right all along.

Exactly WHAT does past military service have to do with insulting one's colleagues over imagined slights? That, along with a career and life that apparently is riddled with similar incidents, is the mark of an emotionally unstable man. And THAT, my friends, is about the only way that McCain's POW service is relevant to his ability to serve us as President.
