WASHINGTON — Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.

Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed "offensive material." The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.

The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.

David Nammo, executive director of the lobbying group FRC Action, said summit organizers were told the boxes were a parody of Obama's policy positions but had not examined them closely.

Republican Party stalwarts Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney were among speakers at the forum, which officials said drew 2,100 activists from 44 states.

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama's politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"

The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama's wife, Michelle, and Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The Obama campaign declined to comment.

Wearing white chef's aprons, Whitlock and DeMoss were doing a brisk business at noon Saturday selling the waffle mix to people crowded around their booth. Two pyramids of waffle mix boxes stood several feet high on the booth's table.

"It's the ultimate political souvenir," DeMoss told a customer.

Asked if he considered the pictures of Obama on the box to be racial stereotypes, Whitlock said: "We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman's Own or Emeril's _ there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market. So we've taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes."

The socially conservative public policy groups American Values and Focus on the Family Action co-sponsored the summit.

I'm glad that a friend showed me a campaign souvenir that he recieved that he said was being produced for both sides without abusing the other. He told me that their websites are mccaindotcom and obamadotcom. I decided to buy one of each because I felt that both candidates have good and bad points and wanted something political that wasn't a waste of my hard earned money. They are definitely pretty unique (and cool at that). That is the kind of political merchandise that we should be supporting, no matter which side we are on. Hopefullt, these will have some value in the future, unlike the garbage that some try to sell .

Unbelievable!! Mr. Whitlock and Mr. DeMoss are a prime example of what is wrong with the Republican party. The predominately white Republican party that wishes to wrap itself in a so-called "Christian" blanket then precedes to allow this type of thing to be on display at one of their events. What is exactly Christian about the portrayal of Obama as a Muslim in the hopes of playing up to the fears against radical Islamists? They just look like two good old boys from the South dishing up hatred and prejudice. Do these Yahoos really believe that Obama is secretly waiting to declare himself a Muslim and he means to take over the White House! Give me a break! It's not polital satire when it drips of bigotry, xenophobia, and plain ignorance.

Yeah right, they didn't think that it would be considered offensive that Obama would be on box of Waffles. By the way boys, Americans come in all races, ethnicities, and yes, religions.

A motto for the Republican party seems to be "Country First, Citizens Last!"

Sincerely,
A White 40 yr old female that voted for Bush the first time and saw the huge error of her ways. Never again will I vote for the political party that has taken our country down in the last 8 years. McCain is the same and I will have none off it.

Wake UP! The clock is ticking!!

Growing up in Tennessee (quite close to Franklin actually) was a wonderful experience but this kind of thing really makes me sad and ashamed. I hope folks realize it's not representative of everyone that lives there.

Ok so here we go again who told them that this was funny. This time they have gone to far. It don't matter black, white Hispanic or any race this was offensive. Why do the republicans keep playing with our intelligence? Did they think we would not notice the racist under tones? And how many times do we have to tell them that he is not muslim. The republicans are spending way to much time worrying about Obama and not enough time trying to win a campaign. Here is some advice more talks about the issues and less jokes.

This isn't racist.

It's satire.

It's unfortunate that since Obama is black, any political satire aimed at him is called racism.

So you don't think it was racist when he was in a sombrero and pancho?

THIS ISN't RACIST?!? It's called "political satire"?

And you can "say" that with a straight face!

Gee, I wonder why they say that some people see the same America differently?

In NO WAY is this racist.

All it's making fun about is the fact that Obama waffles.

#1 - It shows Obama is a waffler.

#2 - Shows Obama is a Muslim - ( that is open to interpretation ).

But there is NOTHING here that cries racist.

The racist part is only in your misguided little brains.

Again, why put him in a sombrero and pancho? That was outright racist if you don't think so you are blind!!

Whats so wrong with being Muslim?
Also the attire in that picture isn't singled to Muslims, most Kenyans dress that way be them Islamic, Christian, agnostic etc.
If dumb band dumber really wanted to show how much of a flipflopper Obama is then they could've used flipflops, pingpong paddles or any 2 sided object to make their point. Using pancake/waffle mix shows exactly what they were going for. Next they'll sale nooserope neckties with the Obama 08 logo.

This is really outrageous. Why isn't this on the front page!? Why isn't a link of Lou Dobbs posing with the box with an ear to ear grin in the story? This type of BLATANT racism needs to been seen by all. This is after all what really what we are really up against at the end of the day.

It shouldn't be any surprise to no one that people who like Sara Palin also like racist propaganda like the depiction on the box. As usual, they pretend that they see nothing wrong with it. Those jerks think they're doing something really slick and are quite proud of what they've done.

It also deflects attention from the actual "waffle" charge being made by compounding it with racist image which suggests Obama as a lying bug-eyed Sambo.

When confronted about it, the response usually results as some bigotted babble about reverse racism or how the subject of the propaganda itself harbors some imaginary racist feelings toward whites. They utterly disgust me.
