WASHINGTON — Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.

Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed "offensive material." The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.

The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.

David Nammo, executive director of the lobbying group FRC Action, said summit organizers were told the boxes were a parody of Obama's policy positions but had not examined them closely.

Republican Party stalwarts Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney were among speakers at the forum, which officials said drew 2,100 activists from 44 states.

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama's politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"

The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama's wife, Michelle, and Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The Obama campaign declined to comment.

Wearing white chef's aprons, Whitlock and DeMoss were doing a brisk business at noon Saturday selling the waffle mix to people crowded around their booth. Two pyramids of waffle mix boxes stood several feet high on the booth's table.

"It's the ultimate political souvenir," DeMoss told a customer.

Asked if he considered the pictures of Obama on the box to be racial stereotypes, Whitlock said: "We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman's Own or Emeril's _ there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market. So we've taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes."

The socially conservative public policy groups American Values and Focus on the Family Action co-sponsored the summit.

I've spent time in the South, including Tennessee where these guys are from. That was many, many years ago. It looks like things haven't changed one iota since then. How sad and pathetic that people like this still exist in 21st century America.

Images, such as this, send very powerful and intentionally hateful messages. Unfortunately, it plays to people's prejudices and is the worse kind of racial sterotyping. It's not funny, nor should it be condoned. There are sufficient differences in the views of the candidates (ON THe ISSUES) rather than resorting to juvenile antics.

What if we made a little old doll and placed it in a casket.. and sold it .. I wonder what would they do...

And people keep blogging and commenting saying, Why is Obama behind? I mean he has the same views as most democrats and long held views that Independants can agree with. Please people, stop trying to pretend as if the whole world doesn't understand why Obana is not further ahead. But I forgot, we should "get over it". "That was 300 years ago". "It's all in their heads". Welcome to my world!

Well said. And these guys and their "geez, we didn't know..." attitude only proves your point.

Sad.

Obama/Biden.

Peace.

The fact that racism still exists tells you no one has gotten over it.

I am shocked. Why not just start calling him "Sambama"? Just when you think the right couldn't get any lower, it outdoes itself. The dems might be spineless bureaucrats who will bend over for Bush anytime he says the word "terrorism," but the conservative right are truly troubled almost to the point of insanity. They will lie, they will cheat, they will support a senseless war where hundreds of thousands of innocent people will die, they will back amoral politicians who have been caught over and over engaging in criminal activity, but by God, at least they believe in Christ.

I have a relative who at the beginning of the war claimed that Christ would have supported the war because "he had turned over the tables of the money changers" in the temple. The Prince of Love and Forgiveness, she was telling me, would have backed a war that our own president lied to get us into.

Part of me pities these people and part of me wants to strangle them (or at least give them a good bracing snap-out-of-it slap across the face. Honestly, what the hell is wrong with these people?

I am starting to lose all hope in this country.

So people are not allowed to poke fun at a political icon if he is black, or it's racist. I didn't see anything in here about Obama's race, although the caracature makes him look ridiculous. So what? Ever see any insulting caracatures of Bush?

The color of Obama's skin is irelevant. But if he's going to be president, his skin needs to get much thicker than it appears to be. Everytime they ridicule the president (and it will be nearly daily), he can't allege racism.

In fact, Bush never complains about the routine savage personal attacks launched at him. Obama doesn't seem to have that character. His skin had better thicken up if he's serious.

Obama doesn't seem to have that character? You are kidding right? Did he write this article and send it in? NO! Other's defend the insinuations, innuendo and outright insults agaist him; he himself, unflappable. Now, McCain on the other hand...

in case you missed it, it stated very clearly above that the Obama campaign has declined to comment on this issue.

it's us, his supporters that have his back on this one. so though Obama has too much class to dignify this BS with a comment, we (supporters) will freely voice our opinion on the matter. we know this is hard for you to comprehend, but it is very simple: unlike the Limbaugh and Hannity sheep who do as they are told, we actually like to think for ourselves.

Republicans are such hypocrites! When Obama used a McCain phrase " lipstick on a pig" there was an uproar of sexism and disrespect even though it was not even remotely related to SP; when SNL parodied SP and HC it was touted by republicans as "sexism & disrespectful" but "Obama waffles" isn't? It is racist and disrespectful to say the least. What is the democrats put out a ketchup bottle with SP's likeness on it and called it Mooseblood and showed her with an AK-47 in battle fatigues crossing the "bridge to nowhere" and stated her "policies" on the label (oh, that's right she doesn't have any policies). Would the republicans be laughing?

Okay, somebody explain this to me:

How is the image of Obama a racial stereotype?

It just looks like a bad caricature to me

I would like to encourage everyone to boycott CNN during the Lou Dobbs show and write/call complaing to advertisers. I have seen the following photo of him gleefully holding a box of the Obama Waffles. I would expect more from him and I am dismayed by his behavior. I would also like to encourage everyone to go to CNN and write a complaint.

How about putting McCain's VP on a box of 'Trailer Trash Bags?' Or, how about putting McCain's face on a septic tank truck with the words 'I am All Filled Up?'
